Germany has more castles than the United States has McDonald’s. This is the Eltz castle, located in Wiershem. It has been owned and occupied by the same family for 33 generations over 800 years

Would have probably been my reaction if I wouldn't live 30 minutes from that thing. I've been there. Its real. And it's a shame that Eltz comes up every now and then while there are dozens of other cool castles around.

Well, Eltz Checks every box and they s a prototype castle. But there are a lot of other cool ones around.

If you ever visit Eltz, visit me in Koblenz. Schloss Stolzenfels and Festung Ehrenbreitstein are a must!

If there's a Burg in Germany it's Eltz.

Whenever I visit my partners parents we pass a road sign. There a village named on that sign, burg Eltz and another Burg. I don't remember the name. But I always feel sad for that Burg. I bet it's beautiful, too. But it's sitting next to the prototype.

The fact I don't remember it's name doesn't make it any better 😂

It's probably because the way to Stolzenfels goes through a depressing suburb of Koblenz while the way to Eltz goes through a magical forest

One of our favorite family trips! Rented a car in Frankfurt, drove from Koblenz to Koln up the Rhein for castle peeping. Highlight was staying the night at Schönburg and walking the battlements at night with a massive fog cloud blanketing the valley.

Thank you for the recommendations! I have been to Burg Eltz and loved it, so magical and tiny in the heart of that keyhole shaped river loop. I would love to visit other castles in Koblenz!

Burg Rheinstein is my personal favourite in the area. It looks fine, but I especially like it because it is small, but there are still a zillion ways to wander around, with every bit being at a different level you find new routes every time.

I loved Koblenz when I went there in 2017, and visited Eltz. It was a very cool hike from a foggy mostly empty village at the train stop. The gondola ride from Koblenz up to the hill fort/museum was great except a lady hopped on the car with me and my wife and proceeded to clip her toenails behind us the whole ride 😂. The museum had a fascinating exhibit on the popularity of American Westerns in Germany I had no idea of.
