Germany has more castles than the United States has McDonald’s. This is the Eltz castle, located in Wiershem. It has been owned and occupied by the same family for 33 generations over 800 years

For those not having castles in their country at all 5000 working castles seems incredible. I bet there are still a few that could be restored too.

A building resembling the appearance of a castle doesn’t make it a castle. It has to have been operated by genuine nobility and intentionally used as a fortified structure and housing unit. Not a vineyard that just put a cool building on their property
