Germany has more castles than the United States has McDonald’s. This is the Eltz castle, located in Wiershem. It has been owned and occupied by the same family for 33 generations over 800 years

Why is it so hard to narrow down exactly how many castles, palaces, and fortresses there are in Germany?

Because sometimes a "large house" is called a castle and sometimes not.

Because the Liberal between castle and somewhat fortified manor house is somewhat fluid, and a lot of these castles are just archaeological remains in the ground, so there may well be some minor ones that haven't been found yet.
