The following guidelines are in place to ensure that r/iPod and r/iPodClassic remain a safe and fair place for discussing iPods and iPod modding, as well as to protect sellers and buyers. These rules will come into effect on the 25th August 2026 and apply to all posts made on or after that date.
1. Separation of Business and Moderation
For the sake of fairness and neutrality, moderators of r/iPod and r/iPodClassic may not operate their own for-profit businesses selling devices, device parts/accessories, or offering repair/modding services. Conversely, users who own or are employed by for-profit businesses selling devices, device parts/accessories, or offering repair/modding services are not eligible to apply to be a moderator of r/iPod and r/iPodClassic.
2. Advertising
Advertisement posts for the sales of goods or services are not permitted on r/iPod or r/iPodClassic, this applies to both businesses as well as private sales. We want these places to be about discussing owning, using, or modding iPods however this is not free real estate to advertise your store. If you wish to advertise on Reddit in general, you must enrol through Reddit's advertiser program. Please note this is not the same as post boosting, if you sign up for paid post boosting this does not make you eligible to ignore this rule even if the post is tagged as a "Brand Affiliate". Reddit ads are not the same as Reddit posts.
Posts by sellers advertising their goods or services will be deleted, and repeat offences will result in a ban. Using alt accounts to recommend your store while acting as a third party is also prohibited and will result in post deletion and a ban.
There are other subreddits that permit the advertising of device sales, such as:
While advertising posts are not permitted, our community features a pinned FAQ with a list of verified vendors. Reputable sellers may apply to be added to this list. In order to be eligible, your store must have a valid warranty and returns policy, as well as contact details for customer support. To apply, please send a modmail.
4. Product Reviews
Product review posts are permitted, however you are strictly required to disclose whether you purchased the goods or services yourself or if they were provided by the vendor for review purposes. If you are affiliated with the vendor, you are also required to disclose this. Reviews with undisclosed affiliations with vendors will be deleted.
Reviews must be made in good faith and reflect your personal opinions, vendors must not influence the contents of your review. If a review is found to be made in bad faith (either by a vendor influencing the reviewer for a dishonest positive review for them or a negative review of competitors), it will be deleted and repeat offences will result in a ban.
Vendors may not use alt accounts to post reviews of their own stores or of competitors while posing as a third party, anyone found doing so will have their posts removed and may be blacklisted from the verified vendor list.
Vendors also may not request the removal of legitimate negative reviews. A legitimate review should describe personal experiences of the purchasing process or the goods/services, but cannot contain personal grievances or targeted attacks. Reviews must not contain any AI-generated content. Reviews will only be removed if they contain content that breaks the subreddit rules or false claims, however legitimate negative reviews will remain to help buyers make informed purchasing choices. Vendors who abuse the reporting tool in an attempt to remove legitimate reviews may be blacklisted from the verified vendor list.
5. Customer Support
r/iPod and r/iPodClassic are discussion forums, we are not direct representatives of vendors and cannot provide customer support. Posts enquiring about specific orders will be locked and we will provide contact details for the relevant vendor. In general, while these posts will be locked they will not be deleted as they may provide useful information about buying experiences from vendors that may help others make informed buying choices. The two exceptions to this are if the posts contain personally identifiable information or if they devolve into unnecessary drama, in which case the post will be deleted.
Firstly, hi 👋, I’m Lucy, you guys might not know me as a moderator and that’s because I’ve only been a moderator in r/iPod and r/iPodClassic for a week. I run the iPoddities Discord and Twitter, and have also been active on reddit, posting archives of iPod Prototype Firmware. Unfortunately my introduction comes at a bit of a turbulent time. With everything going on at the moment I feel the need to say that I’m not (nor have ever been) an employee of Elite Obsolete Electronics.
There has been mounting tensions within the community for the past year or so, and I think it’s come to a point where it needs to be fully addressed. So lets break this down into 5 main sections:
1. The problems
2. What cannot be done
3. What can and is being done
4. Where we need your help
So lets get into it:
1. The problems
Elite Obsolete Electronics and the Conflict of Interest:
I understand that the conflict of interest argument is brought up a lot, so this post is here to address the issue.
As many of you know, Elite Obsolete Electronics (EOE) is a moderator of this subreddit ( u/cowmanisgood ), in fact he makes up half of the active moderation team, myself being the second half. Many of you have expressed your opinions regarding this, many of you have concerns of “Conflict of Interest”
I would like to make it plain and clear that positive critique and negative criticism of EOE (or any other store) is welcome, reviews are what help keep companies accountable and customers aware, I would never want to take that ability away from anyone. EOE also agrees with this, and has not removed any posts criticising their business.
Quite a lot of posts are sweeped up by automod, unfortunately automod isn’t perfect and sweeps up some of the genuine helpful reviews, which I make sure to approve ASAP, however quite a lot of the auto-moderated messages do have insults. Usually aimed at the business owner.
This is where I feel like it is unacceptable, it is fair to say “their shipping times are long” or “quality isn’t the best” or even “The way i felt after this experience was really shitty” but hurling insults simply because you don’t like someone is not going to be tolerated in any context, we offer the exact same privileges to you guys, if someone is being treated unfairly we do our best to step in and stop that. Nobody should have to put up with the level of abuse I've seen from members of this community over the past few days.
I will talk more about what is being done to combat this concern in the future below.
Low effort posts:
I understand that low effort posts are also a common issue here, there is now a (USEFUL LINKS) section, a FAQ will also come at some point but this will be something that needs a community to come together for, advertising is also an issue which has come to light and we will be addressing it later in this post.
Automod:
It isn’t perfect but damn is it helpful, the automod filters for words that are commonly used in situations that usually escalate to actual problems. Unfortunately quite a lot of useful posts are being swept up, but I approve any that aren’t obvious spam or hate.
2. What cannot (currently) be done and why
Currently removing EOE as mod is not viable
Why?:
EOE makes up half of the active mod team, if he were to be removed I would be it, just me, I do not have the time nor mental capacity to moderate a server by myself, at the moment my intention is to set this community up in such a way that it can be handed over to people who can continue to lead it in a way that makes you guys happy. It would not be fair to hand over a burning pile to them. They are also currently the only person willing to take on the responsibility of running this place.
While this may not be the answer you were looking for, removing EOE as a moderator would make very little sense if there is no one to take that spot, it would only cause more problems.
What can and is being done
EOE is not permitted to remove any comments or posts relating to EOE, all posts will be removed by moderators not associated with EOE: this was already the case but I feel full transparency is the best course of action
Issues surrounding order issues from EOE (or any other store) will be *locked*:
I have to pick a middle ground and I feel like it is not fair to use these subreddits as a customer service line, but removing the posts will count as deleting negative reviews.
I understand people do this for a quicker customer service response time but it clogs up the reddit with “Wheres my order” or “this item arrived damaged”, many iPod sales stores have a customer line, it is recommended to use them. I recommend leaving a review to whichever store you used on Trustpilot (simply fill in the searchbar with the link of the website you wish to purchase from). Example: apple.com
Conflict of interest/mod abuse:
This post exists so that the concerns raised repeatedly over the past year are formally acknowledged and addressed. Going forward, posts that cover ground already addressed here — without new information or a specific experience to share — will be removed as they aren’t productive for anyone. If you wish to contact the moderation team, please use the modmail function as all moderators can view it.
If you have concerns about how the subreddit is being run, modmail is genuinely the best place for it — all mods can see it, and it’s a lot easier to have a real conversation there than in a public thread. if you feel like we are not doing a good job you can report us to reddit using this helpful link here.
Reviews of EOE:
Reviews of EOE will not be removed, but may accidentally be swept up by automod and need to be approved. if you wish to leave a review on a platform independant of EOE, you can do so through Trustpilot (eoe.works) or ShopApp
Advertising:
Spam advertising will continue to not be permitted, links to products will be permitted, but may be swept up in Automod and may need to wait for approval. If you wish to promote a start-up product please contact us on Modmail.
Automod:
It will never be perfect, but we are trying to reduce the amount of false flags that it receives, this is all trial and error however so it may take a while for the bot to be better.
“Low effort” posts:
for the time being, simple questions will remain, annoying as it is for regular members there are people who are new to iPods and will need help setting them up, until a proper FAQ is in place at least, its a vague term but hopefully we do a good job moderating this issue.
4. Where we need your help
FAQ and Useful Links:
We are currently working on a FAQ, but in the meantime please suggest Useful Links in the comments of the Helpful Links Post FAQ will be in the works in the coming months, which we will 100% need your help for!
Feedback:
please let us know what you think of our current plans, whether you like them or not. It’ll help me adjust to deal with the bigger issues. This post won't be locked, you can speak your mind, some may be Automodded but we can still see them
Please be kind:
I understand you’re all frustrated, me too, I hope that this post can at least show that I’m willing to take some accountability, this post probably should have been made quite a while ago, better late than never I suppose... but please be kind and patient whilst we start rebuilding a strong foundation for the community. Unfortunately the work can only start on making this place better now because, quite simply, I wasn’t a moderator of this place before
If you have any questions please feel free to leave them below, I will do my best to answer them quickly, if they get automodded don’t worry, I can still see and approve them and answer them, it just might take a while longer.
As seen in my previous post finally got everything needed to gift my daughter’s rebuilt iPod for her birthday tomorrow. Filled with some of our favorite music and home videos that I make for her each year for her birthday.

Just wanted to share my six-month-long project with the community. I brought my old friend back to life: originally a 160 GB thick black iPod Classic 6.5G.
I used it regularly until the end of 2011, and recently found it again in an old electronics box.
What I’ve done:
New orange/black body, decided to keep it thick
1900 mAh battery
1 TB of storage (dual 512 GB)
Taptic Engine
New 7Hz Salnotes Zero 2 headphones with an orange cable
Many thanks to @Olsro for the guide that made it possible to update the firmware and get 1 TB working.
And many thanks to @therealsavi for iOpenPod, it helped me a lot with rebuilding my music library.
Looking forward to listening to music again on my old-new friend!
This 7th gen was a nice little afternoon activity 😁
I think I will keep it in the iPod dock in the kitchen and play my music there when I’m cooking 🧑🍳
Hi, I recently did the Bluetooth mod to my ipod following that little guide woth the recommended parts (made by or based on Oxyll BT mod - pic4).
I tested it, it can connect to my BT earphones although there's noise coming from somewhere, researched and I'll try later bridging the grounds and/or changing the audio cables in hopes the issue dissapears.
But my main problem is that whenever I toggle on the lock button, just the BT automatically stops and the status light either keeps on or off instead of blinking and I have to force reboot the ipod to make it work again. The ipod works fine regardless of the BT.
Is that behavior normal in the mod or did I do something wrong in my installation?
Another thing I noticed with this BT board is that is constantly powered and searching for a BT device to connect.
Can I add another dongle to turn it on or off without using the lock button as a push button?
Or would it be better to try to mod it with the board of one of those BT receivers-transmitters (pics 5-6), since they use battery they can be turned on and off, I could use the same combination of enter and forward button to toggle it. The ugreen is an equivalent of like 18 usd, eassager half the price but the few products I've got from that brand have performed fine so far.
Worst case escenario I'll remove the current internal BT and use an external transmitter when I want to use a wireless connection.
Hi, I've tried searching but I haven't found a clear answer. The advice of using sandpaper and something like Plastx seems to be for plastic plates only?
Is there a way to remove light scratches from a 7th gen faceplate? Specifically around the click wheel. Thank you.
Finally getting around to modding my iPod that's been sitting in storage for 15 years. I opened it up and there seems to be spots of corrosion. I tried starting it up a few months ago and the screen didn't show anything...I tried FireWire, so I don't think the issue is the battery and I heard the hdd spin so I doubt it's that. I bought an upgrade to both either way just to make sure before I bought a screen (and they're upgrades I wanted to do anyways). However, now that I finally opened it, I see copper oxide spots in several location, I'm wondering if it's even worth trying to salvage this iPod.
I hope it's not worth scrapping, I love this thing and got it 19ish years ago. But I wanted the opinions of those who have more experience with this. I suppose I wanted to ask if this is too far gone to continue with? I've attached a picture, hopefully it's not too hard to see what I mean.
I recently updated my thick 5th Gen video with a dual Micro SD adapter from AliExpress, all good working beautifully had all my playlists synched and was happy as.. Until I decided to add a 3000Mah battery to add a bit of weight as the device felt a bit light without the old dual platter HD, popped the case open inserted the new battery and now my click wheel doesn't work!
Can't scroll and no button presses work apart from the reset combo of menu and select.
I'm gutted, nothing changed apart from the SD adapter and the battery and it has been working fine for a few weeks with the SD adapter prior to the battery swap, I haven't been near the click wheel. Now deciding whether its even worth buying a new click wheel to try as from what I've read on here this seems to be a common fault of click wheels giving up after mods but haven't found a definitive answer as to if its fixable.
Hold switch works as it should and displays the lock symbol, I also tried disconnecting and reseating the click wheel but that made no difference, grounds are both in place with no damage.
Any suggestions as to how I can get it working again?
I wanted to start using my dad’s old iPod Photo (which was set up on Windows, which I use). It already had a few gigs of music on it, and I wanted to add more. I saved his music to my computer and restored the iPod to factory settings, so that I could sync it to my iTunes.
No matter what I tried, I could not get music onto the thing. Syncing to iTunes didn’t work, older versions of iTunes didn’t work, CopyTrans didn’t work, I wasn’t able to set up RockBox, I even tried just dragging and dropping music into the F folders in the iPod’s files (the inverse of what I did to get the music off of it).
I had to fight with my computer along the way, like turning off that feature for the USB hub it was connected to that allows the PC to turn it off to save power (I made sure that none of the other things related to the iPod had this turned on). Even after doing that, my PC would still struggle to recognize that it had an iPod plugged in, and would often read it as a USB drive, or just nothing at all, but this problem seemed to be fixed by changing to a different port.
I’ve rebooted the thing countless times, I’ve put it in disk mode countless times, I even did a diagnostic test on the hard drive, which said that everything was in working order, and even then I still couldn’t put anything on it.
I was trying to follow anything that might work, and someone had suggested using Apple Devices, and that gave me the same results I was now getting with iTunes when I tried to factory reset this iPod (error 1415). As far as dealing with this error, somebody had suggested to format the device in Disk Management. And so I formatted it, making sure that it formatted to FAT32, and nothing changed, other than the fact that all the files and folders that were on the iPod are now just gone.
I tried a command prompt (run as admin) to rebuild the MBR, and that didn’t work. I tried timing the command to go while it tried updating through iTunes, but I have maybe one second tops between clicking to update and the error 1415 popup, and even when I was sure that I’d gotten it, it still didn’t work. This is where I’m at now.
So is it just toast? Was it toast from the get-go? I could really use some help, and I haven’t found any browsing on the internet.
Getting pretty fed up with this company and wanted to see if anyone had good experiences with them. I’ve now been sent one bad battery that swelled within one month of installing it into my iPod and two different hold button assemblies that have come snapped in the mail because of poor packaging. No email I’ve ever sent to the company has been addressed or answered and I’m getting pretty tired of it. What reliable stores are you guys getting your parts from?
Hi! I recently got a sealed 7th Gen 160gb iPod Classic from eBay. I am just wanting to make sure if the seal is truly factory sealed as opposed to it being resealed.
It was being advertised as brand new and sealed but it also mentioned that it might not work due to the age of the battery because it’s been unopened for over a decade, and should be kept as a collectible. I’m not well versed on the seals Apple used back then but to my untrained eye and seeing old YouTube unboxing videos, it looks real lol. I will show pictures and details of the listing. Thank you in advance!
Also, I am not planning on opening this as I want to keep it sealed for a collection!
I created this software because the process of getting my Spotify music on my IPod was nearly impossible. This streamlines the whole process.
The music gets tagged with all the proper metadata, album art, etc. It also generates an M3U file for playlist formatting.
This software works by taking a your playlist, parsing the list into a CSV, then finding an exact match of the music off YouTube. Then, it uses YT-DLP to download the music, and FFMPEG to format the tracks.
In the newest version, I've added a library function where you can organize, edit, and rescan your downloaded playlists, allowing you to keep a constantly updating library ready to import onto your IPod. I've also added a feature to sync your music directly to your IPod from the application itself, so you no longer need ITunes.
