Work, Health & Housing Seeking help with disability insurance

Upvotes

Anyone have a health practitioner (e.g. psychologist, physiotherapist, private nurse practitioner, etc) that helped you obtain long term disability? If so could you recommend/message me their name. I am suffering from chronic hip pain and I'm struggling to even do my office job right now. I have had the issue since April 2026. Just returned to work from parental leave this week. Unfortunately my family doctor is not that much help. I had to go elsewhere for a referral of a private MRA which shows that I have a labral tear and that my acetabulum is anteverted. He insisted that I don't have a labral tear prior to MRA... I'm a federal employee and we don't have short term disability insurance, applying for long term is my only option plus using up all my remaining sick leave.

News, Weather & Politics Paul Brothers - CBC radio

Upvotes

Listening to the morning show on CBC 90.5, and a familliar voice was heard. Paul Brothers, former Global Morning TV show host was heard reading the morning news in lieu of Portia Clark. Is this going to be a temporary fit??? (Edited for content and mostly grammar).

Radiate Positivity ☀️ Positive Vibes Friday

Upvotes

The weekend is here.

This is a weekly mega-thread for good, heartwarming or uplifting news. Ideally local but non-local is welcome too. Fun pet photos or memes, tales with happy endings, personal anecdotes that you want to share with 179k+ internet strangers, etc. We could all use more positive news and vibes in our lives right now.

This is a rules relaxed space, but we will still be monitoring for personal attacks, doxxing, and stuff that doesn't fit the theme of the thread.

Work, Health & Housing Is anyone happy with their apartment building?

When I first moved into my building, it was great - the building was always clean, garbage was picked up regularly, they took care of the grounds, there were no mice, and things were fixed quickly.

It started slowly - first the annual garage cleaning was skipped, then the carpet cleaning, then everyone started getting mice, then tenants were calling the city because garbage wasn’t being picked up. There are mice running through the halls. It’s like night and day in just a few years, that it’s hard to even comprehend.

Is this normal now or do I just pay a lot to live in a shitty building?

I’m starting to feel like that person who stays in a toxic relationship for years because they’ve convinced themselves it’s normal.

Food & Dining Where to buy Quorn products in HRM?

Quorn is a brand of vegetarian meat substitute from the UK. I’ve come across it in other countries but haven’t found it here. Has anyone seen it for sale around HRM?

Work, Health & Housing Looking for someone who can fix and WETT-certify a wood stove

Just bought a place in Eastern Passage, and the home inspection flagged a few issues with the wood stove setup.
I’m looking for someone who can come take a look, give me a quote for the work that needs to be done, actually do the work, and then issue the WETT certificate once everything is up to standard.
I’m not looking for just an inspection — I already have the inspection report. I’m hoping to find someone who can handle the repairs/work as well.
Who have you guys used, and would you recommend them?

Hey all!
I’m looking for a kitchen tv, preferably an under counter one but a really small crtv would do - does anyone know where to find such a thing besides getting lucky at Salvation Army or vv?

Driving & Transit Dude. DUDE. WTF. Don’t cut off pedestrians like this

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If you’re one of the pedestrians who flipped him off: I’m with you. This intersection (Bayers & Windsor) sucks and it’s not the first time I’ve watched this kind of nonsense happen.

If you’re the driver: what the hell were you thinking? The irony is that if you were in such a goddamn hurry, you could’ve jumped the zebra stripes to the turn lane earlier and made the light. Fun fact: you were only three cars ahead of me at the Almon stoplight.

Work, Health & Housing Where in HRM have you found adjustable ergonomic chairs? Researched extensively but have not had success.

I've been to many stores trying to find a good desk chair. Any suggestions on where to ship for a desk chair with good lumbar support?

Food & Dining Cozy restaurants downtown?

Looking for a cozy restaurant in downtown Halifax that isn’t too too noisy (as in we’ll be able to hear ourselves talk) preferably with booths or comfy sitting! For a friend’s birthday. It can be any cuisine other than Indian.

News, Weather & Politics Special Weather Statement (Significant Rainfall)

From Environment Canada:

3:35 PM ADT Thursday 3 September 2026

Significant rainfall is possible.

Locations: central, northern Nova Scotia and Halifax County.

Total rainfall amounts: 30 to 50 mm. Possibly higher in areas of heaviest rain.

Time span: Until Saturday evening.

Remarks: A developing and slow-moving weather system is expected to bring a period of significant rainfall. Tropical moisture may contribute to sustained, heavy downpours. Rainfall rates of 5 to 10 mm per hour may occur over some locations. Thunderstorms may develop over some areas, producing locally heavier rainfall.

At this time, the heaviest rainfall amounts are expected over eastern Nova Scotia and rainfall warnings are in effect there.

Water pooling on roads may make travel more difficult in some areas.

Consider adjusting travel plans to avoid the most adverse conditions.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

Hopefully is less bad than predicted, but stay safe everyone.

Sightseeing & Tourism Looking for a place to stay Sept. 5-6 … any local tips?

Hi everyone!

My girlfriend and I are visiting Nova Scotia from Germany.
We’re landing in Halifax Saturday afternoon, September 5, and are looking for a place to stay for one night (Sept. 5–6).

We’d be totally happy to spend around $200 CAD for the night, but somehow even basic hotels and hostels are way more expensive than that this weekend (or already fully booked).

We pick up our rental car on September 6 and leave Halifax that day, so we only need a place for one night. Since we won’t have a car on Saturday, somewhere in Halifax or easily reachable by public transit would be ideal.

We’re two friendly and respectful travellers and would be happy with pretty much anything: hostel, guest room, Airbnb, etc.
If anyone has any tips for affordable places or knows a hidden gem, we’d really appreciate it! 🙏

Thanks so much! We’re really looking forward to visiting Nova Scotia! 🇨🇦

Schools & Education In person course upgrading

Hello Dear halifax community.

I am making this post because I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for upgrading my pre calculus and physics credits. I want to do it in person beacose i struggle to do it online. I already applied to nscc but they have a big waitlist so I was wondering if there are any other places that would do that.

I dont know if age matters but I am 19.

Thank you so much for all you time reading this.
