Flipping the bird is usually inappropriate, especially as a child. This time it's 100% appropriate and golden comedic timing.

To be fair, for (at least some) non native English speakers, the middle finger doesn't have the same strong connotation as it does for native English speakers. We (again, some, not all) don't have the same strong attachment to its meaning, so we are way more lax in its use.

It's not that rude in the UK but kids think it is due to the American influence. Putting 2 fingers up is more rude
