He should have just screamed at the top of his lungs and fallen for the prank? If I tried to prank my kid and he was wise to it, he'd get a pass on flipping me off for sure.

I would not mind a cheeky answer or him mocking me or calling my bullshit, but flipping me at this age would call for a clear tell-off

I do also agree with that. I could have added to my first comment that I personnaly wouldn't do that to my kids. But, in any given situation, I would not agree with the flipping off at that age.

I'm not a native English speaker, so maybe "tell-off" was not translating my tought so well. But clearly this would end with me firmly telling my kid that this is absolutely not something you do, especially at this age.
