Why do countries store and transfer gold?
Why are they moving it out of the US?

This is more a US focused question but with this Lindsay Clancy trial, I was wondering why the system requires a unanimous jury, with the judge sentencing after that verdict, as opposed to say "10 jury members believe the defendant to be guilty while 2 believe the defendant not guilty" and then the judge can actually judge.

I understand how an STI can spread once someone already has it, but how did the very first person get infected? If sexual transmission requires someone else to already be infected, how did the infection initially enter the human population?

I had open heart surgery as a child - what would happen if I got scurvy? Would the scar completely reopen? What about where they cut through my sternum?

I get that as the fuel gets “used up” ie turns to other elements that it would be less efficient as a fuel, but surely that would be better than just drumming it up and burying it?
Or could you just melt it all together into a new fuel rod?

Student here, trying my best to understand electricity. Is electricity current? Or is it voltage? Is it wattage? I don't totally get which does what. From my understanding voltage is the measure of potential difference, like the difference in energy an electron might have in different points in a circuit. And then current is the flow of charge, and charge is a property of matter. But then what is electricity itself made of? All of these units? None of them? Which one of them is actually energy? Which thing is used to power the laptop I'm writing this question on?

I'm sure temperature must have something to do with it, but I don't get nearly as tired walking around on a day that's cold but dry.

I've been recently getting ads for an app that promises to give you money/gif cards/cupons depending on how much walking or running you do on a day, but I've also seen these same mechanics on other apps (e.g. instead of walking, watching series or videos) and I have never understand how they work and most importantly WHERE does that money even come from. Are these scams? Do they have anything to do with money laundering? Are they gonna sell my bank data???

Both Queen Elizabeth-class of the Royal Navy and America-class of the U.S. Navy fly F-35B as their fighter aircraft, a STOVL aircraft. The flight deck on Queen Elizabeth-class ships is equipped with ski jump to facilitate the takeoffs of F-35Bs while the flight deck on America-class ships is not.

Why do Queen Elizabeth-class carriers need the ski jump if the F-35B is proven to be capable to be launched from a flat deck unassisted?

What happens on the day of purchase? You drive to the dealership and you’re ready to sign the papers but the car needs to be insured before it leaves the lot, so how do you do that? Do you call the insurance company right then at the dealership? Do you do it before? How does this work?

I don’t understand why companies list non-existent positions they have no intention of filling. Unlike spam, it actually costs them money to post these fake listings. If they’re just harvesting résumés, why aren’t they just scraping the millions of résumés people post online for free? What benefit are they getting from wasting job seekers’ time?

Is it that the probability is low enough for the business to eat up the worst scenario in reality, there are enough procedural frictions to prevent it from happening en masse, or any other firm ground that not many outsiders know about?

Bridges and railway tracks need room to expand and contract when the temperature changes, but cities have water and gas pipes running underground for miles with seemingly no gaps at all.

I started wondering about this after my street had a water main replaced and they used really long sections of pipe. Wouldn't temperature changes make expansion a pretty big problem over that distance?

Does being underground somehow stop the pipe from expanding, or is the movement handled somewhere else in the system?

ELI5 why, historically and/or practically, do people like ranchers, “cowboys”, landscapers, and other professions that work outdoors in warm weather, or in warm or hot climates, wear or would have worn so much clothing. I understand to a point not scratching your legs or bugs in short pants, but why the long sleeve flannel shirts when working in the hot sun for 8-12hours or more?

Any time I’m working part-time doing construction we’re usually in shorts and tank tops or sleeveless shirts and still sweating and hot.
