can't seem to find a way online to set it so that it automatically downloads preempt kernels

I think it's just a matter of my search engine skills being weak but I want to set devuan to always update to the newest realtime kernel.

I guess, specifically, when I type sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade and there's a kernel update, then it will grab the preempt kernel instead of the standard.

BcalcOS Linux

BcalcOS Linux

A new linux distribution because there are so few of them. /s

Brief discussion of why.
https://www.bcalcos.org/whypage

Tech Highlights
intentionally only 1 version

  • Devuan based
  • XLibre
  • sysvinit
  • SLiM
  • Xcfe

additional details https://www.bcalcos.org/techpage

Unique vs Base Devuan
for this Alpha Release

  • XLibre default
  • Brave Origin is only offered browser
  • UFW (enabled)
  • ClamAV (installed only for manual runs)
  • branding colors and fonts
  • custom scripts
    • daily update notifications
    • weekly fstrim run
    • GUI wrapper for Marp
    • wireguard start at boot (not enabled)
    • font hide - hides several "extra" fonts
    • fastfetch cool quail image
    • sanitize the Refracta ISO before final production
  • custom applications
    • distribution installer (more below)
    • Welcome Center for new Linux users to help install/ remove curated applications as well as run updates or create new users
    • Quail Calc which is a basic calculator written in C++ (it works only because an LLM intervened and ignored my first pass)

The distribution installer was frustrating.
For some reason, I could not get BcalcOS using Refractainstaller or Devuan (live-boot version) to install on 1 of my test machines without a manual workaround. Since I only have 2 that was a 50% failure rate, ha. I wasted an entire day messing around with it before giving up and building a custom installer.
It is fairly rigid in that you only select the target disk and provide your timezone, user name, and user password. That's it. The application determines the typical user choices of boot method, partition structure, partition sizes, language, and keyboard.
I suppose one positive aspect is that a new Linux user should be able to easily install the distribution.

**Alpha Release - for secondary machines only**

Installation instructions are here:
https://www.bcalcos.org/installpage

The ISO is here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/bcalcos-linux/files/

Github is here although pretty sparse at the moment:
https://github.com/briancalc/bcalcos
I'll add removal steps for the customized scripts.

Roadmap
: open to constructive ideas
: work on the custom installer to allow more user options as in for a penny, in for a pound
: add applications and/or functions to the Welcome Center. Documentation mentions being Flatpak ready but I may remove. While I'm not anti-flatpak, I try to avoid them.

How is it to be on devuan unstable

I am really fascinated by the devuan, because it has a lot of packages and support. So how is it to be on unstable version of devuan? Is it like on arch, but without pacman and aur? or is it like on ubuntu?

When is Devuan getting plasma 6.7

My apologies if this has been asked before. I only found this distro two weeks ago. Loving it but I was wondering if anyone has heard a time-frame as to when KDE Plasma might be upgraded to the latest version?

Thanks in Advance...

Spent my weekend building a lightweight, systemd-free daily driver. Devuan + i3wm.

The Stack:

  • Base: Devuan 13
  • WM: i3wm
  • Launcher: Rofi
  • Bar: Polybar
  • Compositor: Picom (Transparency & opacity effects)
  • Widget: Conky (Clock and Weather)

It feels incredibly fast and responsive. I’m still getting used to the i3 workflow, but it’s exactly the level of control I was looking for.

What’s next? I’d love some suggestions for customization tweaks. Looking for any aesthetic or functional tips!

Some packages not available on testing

I do not use the new /etc/apt/sources.list.d so here is my /etc/apt/sources.listand some packages are missing like Blender and tilp2

connor@dell:~$ sudo apt install tilp2
Package tilp2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

Error: Package 'tilp2' has no installation candidate

Soon to Be New Devuan User

Hello all,

I recently started using Debian Testing and really liking it. But I just saw my state just sign a bill to require OSes for age verification by 2028. I know that’s 2 years but I want to find something that won’t allow age verification.

Other than Devuan being systemD free, is it any different to Debian? Also what’s some tips when using i?

Thank you all, for librevuan.

To be honest, I abandoned librevuan because of its idiotic architecture and dependence on sysvinit, and also because of its laziness.

(This isn't an insult; it's just that the Arch architecture is closer to me than Debian.)

I had an idea for creating mintix based on artix, but that's a completely different story.

Thank you all, and enjoy the cool librevuan wallpapers!

On a T520 running Deb w/ sysv. Using a EXP GCD Beast adapter with a 4gb rx550 but the computer does not detect it with " lspci |grep -iE 'display|vga' " even with the power setting set to generation 1.

Curious about Devuan and seeing the non-systemd side of things. What do y'all like about the non-sysd inits?

What stuff about it have y'all liked and what should I expect? I've been using debian for a couple of weeks and liking it quite a bit but have been recommended to try non-systemd stuff. Will probably install on my L420 within a day or two.

Wait what I have to install calamares on the minimal installation. Imagine if I never noticed this Bruh

I am installing it right now. If I didn't notice the apt works on minimal installation. I wouldn't have known their is a way to get a installation framework for it to get the gui 🫩 not bad devuan not bad. I'ma still defend you cause your not using systemd but at least you can have a WARNING when some noobie wants to install minimalist installation.iso

So they know what their getting into before they make us look like egotistic OpenRC preachers 😂 well tbh 😂

Anyway gonna send my rice later

Can someone update the Minimalist installation.txt file

I noticed it doesn't really mention the login and password just tells you briefly what to expect and what to do within it.

Login is root

Password toor

I am saving you the trouble from installing some other distro and booting through it 😭 even on the site the comment I saw only mentioned root they do mention toor on the .txt file but they aren't super clear with it

Librevuan - the end? (Or only start?)

XX11Libre:

I think Librevuan was a bad idea, maybe I'll come back to it someday. But right now, no, it needs to be COMPLETELY reworked.

So

For now, I'll gain experience.

And then I'll come back to it.

On the third day, I realized it's really hard to play solo.

I'm sorry, guys, just be patient, and thanks everyone for the support! I'll be back. If anyone continues this, invite me, I'll help you. But it's hard for me alone, thanks! Maybe in someone's eyes I will seem like a freak - but I don't want to make excuses, I'll say right away - it's hard for me
