For anyone who currently works or previously worked at a Google data center, what is the culture actually like on the operations side?

I’ve heard plenty about Google corporate culture, including the politics, competition, people protecting themselves, and sometimes throwing others under the bus. I’m curious whether that carries over into the actual data center environment or if DC operations is completely different.

How are relationships between technicians, leads, managers, and FTEs? Do people generally help each other and work as a team, or is there a lot of internal competition and backstabbing?

Also curious about promotions, management, work-life balance, and whether people generally enjoy staying in Google data center operations long term.

Would especially appreciate perspectives from people who have worked at Google DCs and can compare the culture with AWS, Meta, Microsoft, or other hyperscalers.

Has anyone ever negotiated a pay for a data center position, because I applied at google and I have years of data center experience, but was told pay is $86k, I dont wanna be too agreesive and lose the opportunity.

How should I approach this?

So Google is proposing a data center near the end of the 250kV DC line. All the residents are up in arms over the noise/pollution/lights/water/electric usage and think it should be built elsewhere or not at all.

Is putting it there a huge benefit due to less conversion losses, and being in a colder climate save on tons of cooling? Will generators be a non-issue due to extremely high capacity and high reliability power?

Any discussion on the topic is basically shut down with "DATA CEnTER bAD" and I think most of the people have little idea what they actually do.

I have an upcoming interview for a Data Center Technician position at Google and wanted to see if anyone here has gone through the process or works in a similar role.

I currently work as a Diagnostic Technician, where I troubleshoot servers using Linux, do maintenance, and handle rack and stack operations.

For anyone who’s interviewed for Google DCT before, what kind of questions did you get? Was it mostly technical, or did they also focus a lot on behavioral questions?
I’m especially curious about what areas they tend to ask about when it comes to server troubleshooting, networking, RAID, Linux, etc.

Any tips on what to expect or anything you wish you had known going into the interview would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Do you use the lanyards and badge holders they give you, or did you find a multi badge holder with RFID? I would prefer to have them all under one holder instead of having three badge holders on my waist.

I am almost certainly in the wrong thread but I am asking here to see if anyone in the DC world has experience with it. I have a sub cline that has both HDDs in SSD's at two sites. Most are at Equinix DC11 and there are some at Equinix SE2. Does anyone know of a service that will come onsite and crush them? If not what do clients normally do in such as situation?

I am a mechanical engineer working in data center operations & maintenance, mainly working with power and cooling. A recruiter reached out to me for a remote network/rack and stack position (company is based on a foreign country). Pay is significantly higher so I am considering. Is this role transtition viable? Has anyone went through this route?

Hello, I am a BCA graduate with coursework done in data science and it seems like this field is not for me. I've heard about data center technician roles which hires freshers but i need to know if companies always ask for certifications? I am based in India and I know there aren't many Data centers here compared to others but I'm guessing this job isn't so hard on freshers with no experience. Please correct me on anything if I'm wrong.

I'm a tech in NOVA and the past 2 summers have been so hot we've had site wide shutdowns that could last all day, several times. But we have seasons so this is only happening in the summer. What I'm curious about is how you Sunbelt DCs (FL to CA) deal with excessive heat, like AZ for the most part is year round excessive heat so I'm curious how they even work around that.

Hi, I'm a network engineer for a small ISP in the capital region of New York. The company I work for recently purchased an abandoned data center in Albany. I have experience in building core networks for this ISP, and I'd like to get the data center space we have occupied. However, I am not sure about how to go about getting customers or how to go about marketing this space. We tried listing our data center on datacenters.com and got no bites. I honestly figured with the moratorium on building new data centers in New York that we would see more interest in already built space. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Has anyone negotiated the base pay for l4 dco at aws?

I'm currently awaiting my 3rd round interview with the Nvidia hiring manager and I'm trying to get some information on what kinds of questions they might be asking me and if they will have me perform any kind of vm troubleshooting or anything like that.

I'm slightly worried because the relevant experience I have is as a senior fiber/coax resi and enterprise technician for a large ISP. Some of the prescreening questions were about linux troubleshooting, which I know very little about. I have foundational knowledge of the job and I really want to land it.

Any knowledge you have about the kinds of questions they will be asking or things they might have me do during the interview will help me tremendously.

I got invited to the final loop for an IT Specialist / DCO role, consisting of two 60-minute Zoom rounds scheduled on the same day.

1. Are both rounds split between technical questions and Leadership Principles, or is one purely tech and the other purely LP?

2. Which specific technical topics and Leadership Principles (LPs) are most critical to focus on?

3. What are the key things to do versus mistakes to avoid during the interviews?

4. A friend claimed keeping the webcam on isn't mandatory is that true, or is having your camera on expected?
