how are things at cu boulder for graduate students?

hi all, i'm looking at perspective graduate schools in particularly planetary science. i'm wondering how boulder is as a city. i'm from tn and have been here my entire life, and i don't have the money to fly out and visit the campus unfortunately and see things for myself. i'm worried about housing costs being high, and the cost of living to be outrageous, so a gauge would be great! i'm also wondering if you are in the specific program, how you like it and how things are going. thanks!

Am I doing this wrong?

Hi, welcome to my ramble, thanks for dropping in. So, it’s about the third week of school and I’m a freshman. The problem is, I’ve barely spoken to anyone this whole time. I participate in class and ask questions, talk to my partners in class when I need to, and say hi to whoever I pass by in the halls in my dorm. But I don’t….talk to anyone? If that makes sense. I’ve gone a couple of different days where I barely spoke more than a few sentences the whole day. I have one friend I’ve kept in touch with since orientation but we only text periodically and live on opposite sides of campus. I have a friend from high school but they commute and have different classes so we also don’t see each other much. I’ve sat alone doing homework or reading for every meal and when I’m not in classes I’m in Norlin library studying or in my dorm for the night (which is a single, so no roommate.) I guess I just feel really lonely, and like I’m missing out on everything I should have done by now like make friends and tons of memories by now. I also don’t know how to stop being so quiet and ‘complacent’ to be alone. Like, my building has parties every night on the top floor but the thought to go to them never crosses my mind, and when I walk into any place I automatically choose an empty table or sit away from everyone else on the field. I’m comfortable doing those things but I don’t want to keep doing them. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks for reading and sorry for the drawn-out train of thought lol.

The Rec Center 9/2/26

What's happening at the Rec Center right now? There's five firetrucks from what I saw, and at least two ambulances and police cars, and the building is closed. I don't mean to be nosey if someone had a medical emergency or something, but this seems a little overkill for that?

Need help picking seats at Folsom for a game.

Need help picking seats for a football game.

Hopefully you all can help me out. I would like to go to a game specifically to see the marching band. My daughter has just started high school and is very excited about joining the marching band. I want to show her what it's like at the college level. Where can we sit to be closest to the band during the game? I'm making some assumptions that they are in the stands or somewhere playing during the game plus a halftime show. Please help!

Seeking Volunteers for CU Boulder Prosthetics Design Project

Hi everyone!
We are a team of graduate mechanical engineering students at CU Boulder working on a project focused on designing a prosthetic device.  As part of our user research, we are looking for volunteers who currently use or have previously used a prosthetic device and would be willing to participate in a short interview.
The interview would take approximately 20–30 minutes and would focus on your experiences, challenges, and needs related to using a prosthetic device. Your feedback would help us better understand users' experiences and guide our design process.

Looking for textbook - “Microbiology: An Evolving Science" 6th edition

The textbook is for EBIO 3400. I am taking the class remotely so I am not eligible for any of the support programs and I can't afford it.

If anyone has the PDF for this textbook hit me up in the comments of PM me. It would be so incredibly helpful. Thanks!

check out my vibecoded slop for zyns

I made LypLocal, users can post local Zyn deals for other people to find at CU.

Basically you see a cheap can somewhere, post the price + location, and it shows up on the map. Neat.

Cheap can at some random gas station? Post it.
Store charging criminal prices? Now we all know.

That’s pretty much it. No e-mail verification, just a sign in to keep up on what's fresh.

lyplocal.com

Boulder is pretty empty right now so add some spots and let me know where the best deals are at.

Academic Probation and Financial aid issues

Good times! JK, every time I talk to someone from CU about Academic Probation or Financial aid I get different answers. I am a 4th year and still don't have a direct people to contact. Is that normal? Do you call the main number, or do you email your advisor for everything?

Does CU admissions consider music studies not through school as an extracurricular?

My son wants to go to CU in a few years. His big extracurricular action right now is music—guitar and singing, studying each and performing. But these are not extracurricular activities at school. Will CU admissions consider these the same way a music club at school would be considered?

Parking

Does the campus actually check if you are parked where you shouldn’t be, I guess they gotta check every single license plate to see if hey don’t hand out physical permits.
