Glasses for Screen Mirroring Is ~60° FOV where display glasses stop feeling like a small floating screen?

• Upvotes

I’m curious if there’s a point where a wider FOV actually changes how you perceive the screen, not just how big the number looks on a spec sheet.

Around 45–50°, I still think of display glasses as a screen floating in front of me. GT Max is at 59°, and I’m wondering if that extra width starts to feel noticeably more immersive after the initial wow factor wears off.

I’d imagine it depends on what you’re doing too. A widescreen movie, a racing game, and a desktop full of text probably expose very different benefits and optical tradeoffs.

For anyone who’s actually gone from ~50° to ~60°, what did you notice first: the immersion, or the compromises around edge clarity and sweet spot?

News Why can the same AR glasses feel so different after changing the host?

With display-style AR glasses, the glasses are only part of the system. Their optics determine what the image can look like, and their sensors determine what tracking data exists. The connected host decides which apps run, how they are arranged, how they are controlled, and whether a remote computer can join the workflow.

Connect the same pair directly to a phone or laptop and the glasses usually become a private display for that device’s existing interface. Connect a compatible pair to an INAIR Pod and the compute layer changes: the Pod runs its own Android environment, provides a built-in touch surface and pointer input, and can access a Windows or Mac computer through INAIR Space. On pairings that support INAIR’s multi-window modes, it can also manage separate app surfaces instead of treating the glasses as one mirrored canvas.

The practical result is a different job for the same display hardware. Android apps can run locally on the Pod, desktop software remains reachable through the remote-PC path, and the phone no longer has to stay in the active display chain. The glasses become the front end of an independent workspace rather than only an output for another device.

The necessary limit is that changing the host cannot widen the field of view or add cameras and tracking sensors that the glasses do not contain. Tracking and multi-window behavior still depend on the exact pairing. The Pod upgrade is therefore real, but it is a compute, interaction, and workspace upgrade—not a universal sensing upgrade.

AR Apps AR Wifi mapping

How my app works:

you walk through your rooms with your iPhone.
LiDAR builds a 3D model of your home live while the app samples your Wi-Fi (signal + speed) as you move.

You end up with a dollhouse view of your actual apartment with the signal painted on it by walking
( with dead zones in red).

Every room gets a score, and it tells you where to move your router, or where an extender would actually help.

What do you guys think about my app?

Events New: SPECS Developer Events Hub

Jesse from the SPECS Developer Relations Team here.

We've recently launched our hub for SPECS developer events:Ā https://devevents.specs.com/devevents

Two things on it today:

-Ā The SPECS launch livestreamĀ on September 16

-Ā UnitedXR EuropeĀ in Brussels this December, which we'll be attending

That's it for now, but the plan going forward is simple: if we're participating in an event in an official capacity and it isn't private, it will go on this page. Hackathons, conferences, happy hours, meetups, demo days, regardless if we're running it ourselves or just showing up.

We'll add things as they're confirmed and registration opens, which means the page will get more useful over the next few months.

If there's a conference, meetup, or hackathon you think we should be at, drop it in the comments. I do read these.

Building Blocks How does this hologram display work?

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

I’m looking to build something like this, but I’m having a hard time figuring out exactly how these displays work.

From what I can tell, the AVA and Gatebox seem to use a similar technique to create that really 3D/holographic look. I’ve tried researching them, but there doesn’t seem to be much information available since this is still pretty niche new tech.

I’ve never seen either display in person, but I found some side-angle photos of the AVA from pre-release reviews. I don’t see an obvious 45° piece of transparent plastic inside, so I’m starting to doubt that it’s a traditional Pepper’s Ghost setup.

I’d like to build something with a taller display area (around 8") so the anime character isn’t quite as small, and ideally use some kind of 3D/layering technique to make it feel even more dimensional.

Does anyone know how these displays actually work, or have any resources I could look into for building something I'm describing?

Glasses w/ 6DoF Reusing a Leap Motion v1 for DIY 6DoF tracking + hand tracking

Post image
5 Upvotes

I've been working on a small open-source XR tracker built around the original Leap Motion Controller v1.

XR Tracker:
https://github.com/vladoshub/xr-tracker

The idea is to reuse the Leap Motion hardware as a compact stereo tracking camera while still keeping its original strength: hand tracking.

The current setup consists of:

  • Leap Motion Controller v1 flashed into UVC mode using leapuvc
  • optional XIAO nRF54L15 Sense IMU
  • custom 3D-printed enclosure / headset mount
  • optical tracking + IMU-assisted 6DoF
  • hand tracking using the Leap Motion cameras

The XIAO is not required. Without it, the tracker can still operate in visual-odometry-only mode, so you can start with just a Leap Motion Controller and add the IMU later if you want.

That said, the IMU improves 6DoF tracking significantly in my testing.

I've been testing the hardware with my XR Gate project on Linux.

Linux is currently required.

The project isn't intended to replace a modern VR headset, and the 6DoF tracking quality is not at that level. Tracking works noticeably better with the XREAL Air 2 Ultra, most likely in part because of the much larger distance between its tracking cameras.

The main use case I have in mind is experimentation and adding 6DoF + hand tracking to AR glasses that don't have their own tracking cameras — especially if you already have an old Leap Motion Controller lying around.

The new xr-tracker repository contains the hardware side of the project:

  • STL files ready for printing
  • FreeCAD source files
  • assembly instructions
  • Leap Motion UVC preparation instructions
  • XIAO firmware and flashing instructions

The enclosure in the photo is the current prototype.

It's still experimental, but an old Leap Motion gives you a pair of synchronized cameras plus hand tracking hardware in a very compact package, and adding a small IMU makes it much more useful for DIY XR experiments.

Related projects:

XR Gate:
https://github.com/vladoshub/xr-gate

XR Controller / XIAO firmware:
https://github.com/vladoshub/xr-controller

I'd be interested in feedback, especially from anyone who has experimented with reusing Leap Motion / Ultraleap hardware for headset or controller tracking.

AR Apps ARIS Cyber Maid Japanese AR Game 2008

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello everyone.

In 2008, this software/game called ARIS Cyber Maid was released. I had it back in 2010, but I lost my old computer. Some anime websites used to host the software for download, along with the .bat file required to make it work, but all of those links are offline as of 2026. :/ At this point, it's basically abandonware, which is really sad because it was a very cool project. If anyone has played it before or knows how to revive it, that would be amazing. Its basic a AR doll that u dress and play with. Theres some old videos on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hS1GjWb0bBU&t=6s

The offical website still exist and have the software to download, but theres no product key to buy :/

https://www.geishatokyo.com/jp/ar-figure/

I find old torrents with the complete software and .bat file to open without key, but theres no seeders anymore.

Self Promo Looking for VR/AR developers to consult for an anime project

Hello! I've been a VR user since 2022 once I got my Quest 2. Since then, I regularly use it for flight simulation, but only that. I wanted to use it for social VR for a while, but didn't have the time to do it, though I have used VRChat a few times. I also studied computer engineering in college, and have experience in coding and IT. Recently, I've been participating in the Japanese anime production space, and started on a new path.

Back in 2024, I started writing an original anime project that involves mixed reality and long distance relationships set in a near-futuristic Japan. Progress on the anime is going smoothly, as I have finished the reference sheets, part of the main story, and animation storyboards. Trips to Tokyo, Okinawa, and Osaka were made in order to experience the cities, and take photos of the areas I want depicted in the anime. I also have people working for me as animators. This story resonates with my personal experience with digital loneliness, and being in a long-distance relationship, that I wanted to make it into an emotional story. Being with someone who is far away from you, and being able to communicate on a device makes a relationship feel more separated because you can’t feel their physical presence. The story will go beyond VR, and will explore deeper topics.

Synopsis

The main character is a computer engineering student who moves to Tokyo, but has been socially isolated for a couple years after the death of his mother. He finds comfort in virtual reality as escapism, and starts developing an app that projects a holographic image of the user into a mixed reality space, as if the user is there in-person, despite being far away. While in Tokyo, he buys a smaller mixed-reality headset with passthroughĀ (headset is based on Bigscreen Beyond 2, but with passthrough, wireless, an OS, and universal cushion)Ā and full body motion trackers, in which he uses to further develop the project as a practical communication tool for himself, so he can learn how to socialize again. His first tester is a girl from Okinawa, who he met on a multiplayer VR game and he sends a copy of the headset and trackers for her to set up. They eventually start talking through mixed-reality, as if they were next to each other, when in reality, they are distant.

Theme

The theme focuses on healing and bridging the gap between isolation and connection by longing for true romance. The long distance connection creates a tension between the characters, as they go through their days without truly being with each other; both with struggles of their own go through a slow, emotional healing journey that culminates in their first true connection.

Unique perspective

Each interaction between the two characters happens in a first-person POV through a VR headset. They are never shown together, until they eventually meet in person.

Concept Art

Inspiration

The concept was inspired by a lot of things throughout the two years of development, but what solidified the idea of the mixed-reality long distance relationships were the face tracking videos made by HashEditsĀ like this one for example, except way more advanced, and implemented using augmented-reality, so that the user can communicate with someone in the real world.

What I'm looking for

I'm looking for developers who I can personally consult in regards to accuracy when it comes to developing VR/AR apps for various platforms. If anyone here develops mods for VRChat, rigs models with motion tracking, can implement social VR into augmented reality like the Quest 3, or any other useful information, please let me know, and I'll be glad to respond to you and connect. I'd love to make friends with people in this community, and your help is greatly appreciated.

extra note: if you can speak Japanese, please let me know :>

Glasses w/ HUD Vision assistance using AR glasses.

Hello!

Hope this is the right forum but I'm looking a pair of AR glasses that can help me with my loss of peripheral vision. I saw Brilliant Labs Monocle that would fit quite well but they've stopped selling them.

The main features should be a camera that can stream onto a HUD that can either be adjusted to where it displays, or have a fixed position on the lower half of the field of view (since I'm blind on the upper right quadrant).

If anyone wants to build me a product described above then contact me and we'll come to an arrangement.

Thank you!
