I’m 26, and despite years of being told by my dentist at my twice a year visits, I have never been great about flossing, at all. Except three or four days ago the desire to floss took over and I’ve been consistently doing so the past three or four nights.
I’ve watched a few how-to videos to make sure I’m doing it right, am using a c-shape, using string floss and spinning it around two fingers, making sure to use clean floss for every tooth, etc. I’m really doing my best. I otherwise have good oral hygiene and enjoy brushing my teeth, flossing has always just felt like One More Thing. Maybe my brain is just fully developing the past few days.
Anyways, pain! My gums hurt 😅 it’s kind of a dull ache all throughout the day and I’m definitely a little sensitive to the harder/crunchier foods that I may eat at the moment. There’s a little blood when I floss but nothing extreme, just in the upper back teeth.
I looked tonight and realized that my gums look like they’ve seen better days. Is this because I’m being too rough, or is this normal for someone who has just started flossing regularly? I was flossing in the morning and at night for the first day or two but did a little research and cut back to doing it at night time only, before mouth wash, and before brushing teeth (in that order). I saw some research showed that plaque takes 24-48 hours to develop so while doing it more frequently won’t be bad for particles in your teeth, I figured it would be good to lower it down to 1x a day until my gums don’t feel so sensitive.
I’d love any advice! I don’t think I’m being rough with the floss, really just going back and forth to clean things out and trying to avoid pain. I’m using expanding floss at the moment, if that means anything!
Thank you for any advice! Currently living abroad and backpacking and don’t have the means to go visit my dentist, or find a new one local, so I want to ensure I’m keeping up with my dental hygiene as best I can.
Edit to add context, 26F from the USA with no history of dental problems, no medication, maybe like 2 cavities throughout my whole life. I do not smoke/vape/chew/etc.
