It's not just the US either. I had a friend who used to work on farms and greenhouses here in Canada, and she made minimum wage for some seriously hard physical labour. Many of her co-workers were on work visas from South America and getting paid FAR less than her (like $20/day with housing). I'm sure most of them could afford to pay a living wage, but I wouldn't be surprised if many have to - or choose to - sell their farms

This is absolutely what is happening. I used to do this type of work when I was a kid. I worked during the summers from age 11 to 15. (Yay rural child labor).

Its sunup to sundown and all of it is constant manual labor. It's brutal work that pays by "completed unit" which varies based on the job. In any given shift, most people were making around minimum wage or less. Some people made a bit more but I doubt anyone made much more than $9-$10/hour at a time when minimum wage was $4.25/hour.

I've wired fire alarm systems in a bunch of ones.

One is great towards their workers, individual rooms in an old house that was on the property and a couple of extra portables that have been retrofited. AC, internet, and provided one vehicle for them if they have a valid license.

One has four bunk beds per room with a shared living space. Still has AC and crappy internet. Livable, but not comfortable.

One I've made multiple complaints about to the authorities, but nothing has been done about it.

Yeah theres nothing like that in the US. Ive worked in bakeries most of my life and flour bags are 50lbs so I dont really have to do more than that at once usually. But I have had to occasionally lift several boxes of frozen dough at a time which will weigh 70lbs (35lbs each). There are some jobs that will require more, like construction or moving furniture either into peoples homes or in warehouses.

I have moved waaay more than 1000lbs in a shift many many times. 

The most I ever did was unload 8 pallets in one shift by myself which by my estimate would be about average 2000lbs each.

Edit to add: women in most jobs in the US are on paper expected to do the same as men, but in practice most people know thats just not going to happen and men will see the women struggling and step in to help, and usually end up taking on more work because of it. Not all the time of course, but its basically just up to the workers to figure it out in the places Ive been. I worked with a woman who was 75 years old and lifting the same boxes and weights as the 18yr old guys and working harder than them too.

My dad was a farmer and he said when a new person would start working for him, sometimes they would be shocked he actually paid them on pay day. So many of his employees were use to working for farmers that would promise to pay them, then come pay day refuse and threaten to call immigration on them if they complained. My dad would tell them as long as they worked for him, they would get paid the amount they agreed on and on the day they agreed on no matter what. That was probably 15-20 years ago now and it’s only gotten worse. Can you imagine doing back breaking labor in 100 degree temperatures and not even getting paid the very small amount the farmer promised?

Happened in the currency crisis/economic collapse in Russia in the 90's. There was lots of work - but nobody was getting paid. So if they weren't paid, they stopped working.

One of the few companies in the Tomsk, Siberia region that paid was a Canadian logging company. A bushel of fresh unshelled peas is around 32lbs or 60lbs if dried and shelled.

To hit $1400/week, you'd need to pick 20 bushels per day 7 days a week. A minimum of 640lbs.
