New to Competitive TOW So, how do i not get my head smashed?

So i have 2 1k games under my belt and the first one i played was world eaters and i got completely destroyed because i over extended.

But hey at least I learned my lesson for next time right? Nope next game was blood angels vs custodes and I did get more points but I wasn't able to kill anything really and I barly dealt any damage which just demotivated me from playing again since then (its been like 4 months).

I will probably have more time soon to play agin but i am feeling a little down about it considering that the last 2 times I got completely destroyed. Any tips on how I can improve?

I am thinking of playing pretty defensively then 1-2 and focus on staging. Place as many units in terrain and hidden as possible.

The plan is to keep a squad of sanguinary guard, death company, and lightning claw terminators in reserve to start.

General Deployment:

screen my entire backfield with scouts and infiltrators.

Use blade guard to go up the side and expansion/push up to opponents objectives

Assault intercessors with the librarian to take the center. They are pretty tough with the 4+ invul. Durable and high OC holders.

Terminators with thunder hammers and relic shields as my anchor unit, tough to kill and can push opponents off their objectives or tank elite units

Death company and lightning claws for strong attackers and a big counter punch or can go target units that will destroy me.

The assault intercessors with jump packs as another big movement unit and low point squad to trade for bigger targets. Love their ability to do mortal wounds too.

What else should I be adding to or changing for planning my turn one? Does anyone have a cheat sheet they use I could see? Any and all advice is welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Thank you brothers

40k Discussion Smaller Army Sizes Discussion

Marines to S5/T5 with coming points increases, Orks codex increasing unit costs but not character costs, repeat unit cost increases (like 2nd+ Defiler)...

What are your thoughts on this move by GW towards smaller armies?

Personally, I am happy to see this. The boards used to be 4'x6', and the smaller tables without reduced army sizes makes the tables feel so cramped and downplays the importance of movement. Also, with smaller armies the game becomes more financially accessible to more players without GW having to drop prices. Hardcore players can still collect more broadly in their armies or more easily start additional armies. It will also be easier to paint armies which is a big bottleneck.

Edit: I made a video documenting people's thoughts on the implications of smaller army size and options for further fixes if GW's design goal is shorter games and increasing the importance of movement https://youtu.be/T1YhWSGqZKA

40k Discussion Why not Bastion Task Force?

I've been playing around with looking at different Space Marine detachments and not many people seem to be playing bastion task force.

For example Bastion (take and hold) + Librarius can give:

  • 10x Assualt terminatiors + hero of the chapter enh (makes them battleline)
  • 10x Assualt terminatiors + Librarian (Celerity)

Meaning you can have 2 termy bricks with fallback and charge, where battleline can fallback and charge. With Lysander the terminators get +1 OC as well.

Plus the benefits to battleline in general. Strats don't seem to bad either, but it doesn't seem to get a lot of play.

Is it just that other detachments are straight up better, or is bastion simply not that good?

40k Discussion Inquisitor model

I went on the hunt in here and couldn’t find anything, for major events Ala LVO and the like, how does the above model work? Since there isn’t an official one in production but it’s in the apps for us to take, would I have to go to each event and hope that my eisenhorn or AoS model is approved or is there guidelines somewhere?

40k List Recon Vs Take and Hold help

Hey All,

So Ive entered a local tournament this weekend. I run Space marines in reconnaissance and theres a lot of people playing take and hold at the tournament.

What general advice can people give going against take and hold as looking at the 2 primary missions the take and hold one just seems so much easier to score primary. (Recon sweep Vs purge and secure)

Thanks all for any help

40k Discussion Good trades for Ghaz.

With the amount of Doomposting about Ghaz at 300pts that has been seen on the InterToobz. I thought it might be fun to make a list of various units that can trade well for Ghaz.

Here are the parameters I would use for a 'trade for Ghaz' option.

General requirements
Cost: Less than 300pts, including all attached characters and enhancements. You do NOT need to include the cost of army picks that can buff, but would not be attacked in turn (for example, Swarmlord provides more CP to army, but could be sitting on Home objective and still do that)
Killyness: Needs 75% or better chance of deleting Ghaz in 1 round.
Must list faction
Must list detachments used
Must list all enhancements used
If Stratagems are used, list which ones and CP cost.

Special exemption: If the combo is shooting based, and reliably eliminates the 20 Gretchin squad placed there for Grot Shields, the points can be over 300 as long as it is under 390 (the cost of Ghaz + the grots).

I'll put a few examples up, hope the rest of the community can come up with others. Especially for factions I don't know well.

Adepta Sororitas:
Detachment: Any
Units: 2 squads of 10 Repentia. (280pts)
Stratagems: None
Miracle dice used: None
Chance of 1 turn kill: 81%

Ad mech:
Unit: 10 Sicarian Ruststalkers in a Skorpius Dunerider. (235 pts) In conq Imperative
Detachment: Eradication Cohort. (3DP)
Stratagems used: Precision Onslaught (1CP)
1 Turn success rate: 91% according to Adept Roll. (assume grot shields negate all damage from the transport. but it does give reroll wounds.)

Option 2:
Detachment: Data Psalm Conclave (2DP)
Units: 10 Fulgarite Electro-Priests With a Tech Priest Manipulus in Skorpiud Dunerider.
Imperitaves: Conquerer|
Stratagem: Chant of the Remorseless Fist
Success chance: 91%

Aeldari:
Detachment: Aspect Host
Unit: 10 Howling Banshees + Jain Zar (270 pts)
Success chance: 89% if the guns aren't available (due to grot shields) 93% if they are.
threat range, can declare a charge after a 16" advance move (14" if you want to save the token for immunity to overwatch)

Astra Militarum.
Detachment: Combined Arms
Units: 2x10 Attilan Rough Riders. (Hunting Lances)
Orders: Fix Bayonets (from out of sight officers)
Stratagem: Explosives
Success chance 78% (you could toss in a Sly Marbo to up the percentages)

Black Templars:
Detachments: Godhammer assault Force (2DP) + Marshal's Household (1DP)
Unit: 5 Sword Bretheren + Helbrecht + Ancient:
SB loadouts:
2x M.C. Power Wep and Pyre Pistol
2x M.C. Power Wep and Heavy Bolt Pistol
1x Thunder Hammer and Plasma Pistol.

Enhancement: Herald of the Sacred Slaughter.
Transport: Umpulsor.
Impulsor Loadout:
- Ironhail Skytalon Array
- Ironhail Heavy Stubber
- 2x Fragstorm Grenade Launcher.

The Pyre pistols, Bolt pistols, and the Impulsor, delete the Grot Squad, with ammo to spare.

Stratagem: CP Charge reroll or Blade of Detestation:
Success Chance: 92% if No need of CP reroll, otherwise 77%

Blood Angels:
Detachment: LAG (3DP)
Unit 10 Intercessors w/ jump Packs + Captain w/ Jump Pack (295 pts)
Enhancement: Rage Fuelled Warrior
Effect Oath of moment
Stratagem Red Rampage (Red Thirst Variant)
Success Chance: 93%

Chaos Knights
Detachments: Houndpack Lance (2DP) might as well add Hunting Warpack now they can be together (1DP)
Units. 2 WarDog Karnivores
Stratagems: Crushing Impact and Hungry For Combat (2CP)
Success Chance 80%

Dark Angels:
Detachment: Inner Circle (2DP) and L:ibrarius Conclave) (1DP)
Unit: Inner Circle Task Force with Attached Librarian and Obfuscation (255pts)
Stratagem: Martial Mastery
Kill Chance: 85%

Emperor's Children
Detachment Court of the Phoenician (2DP) and SPectacle of Slaughter (1DP)
Unit: 6 Flawless Blades led by a Lord Exultant with Exalted Patron, Spear and Lash. (295 pts)
Stratagem: Prideful Superiority (optional) (2CP)
Success Chance: 87.7% without the Strat, 99.8% with

Tyranids:
Detachment: Talons of the Norn Queen.(1DP) and Assimilation Swarm (2DP)
Unit 1 Norn Assimilator w/ the upgrade (280 pts)
Stratagems: Crushing Impact, and Secure Biomass
Current Singular Purpose: Kill Ghaz
Success Chance 84.7%
Note, this works even better if your Norns are on secure an objective.. as Ghaz will average 7 Damage top a Norn, and said Norn can switch to 'Kill Ghaz and wipe him in return.

Anyone else got suggestions for other factions?

40k Discussion Can 25mm bases fit in a 1" gap between other models?

With models charging and stopping just within 1" of an enemy in order to engage it, can something like daemonettes (which are on 25mm bases) then also charge the same enemy model and fit within that 1" gap?

An inch is 25.4mm exactly. So if a keeper of secrets stops 25.3mm away from an enemy model, would the daemonettes then have 3mm extra space to fit their base the gap?

Or is attempting to exploit literally millimeters of measurements a total d**k thing to even attempt 🤪

40k News Warhammer 40K app 2.6.0 (v941) - Ork Codex & Sneaky Leadership changes!

Hey all,

It is me, your favourite (or maybe not) developer giving you a detailed view of 40k app changes. This one is of course obviously focused on the Ork Codex: But they also snuck in a couple of smaller changes you might have missed:

Space Marines

Apothecary -> Can now be attached to BLADEGUARD VETERAN SQUAD
Judiciar -> This model can be attached to the following units:

  • ASSAULT INTERCESSOR SQUAD
  • BLADEGUARD VETERAN SQUAD
  • INFERNUS SQUAD
  • INTERCESSOR SQUAD
  • STERNGUARD VETERAN SQUAD
  • VANGUARD VETERAN SQUAD

Adeptus Custodes

Valerian -> Can now be attached to new units coming in from HH.

Core Rules

This was added to the core rules section, I think this was only part of the PDF before since I did have it in my dataset but only from the PDF parser.

Rapid Disembark And Limitations

When a unit uses the rapid disembark mode after its TRANSPORT makes an ingress move, the models must follow the same rules and restrictions as that TRANSPORT did. For example, if that TRANSPORT had to be set up more than 8" from all enemy units and not within your opponent’s deployment zone, the same applies to the disembarking unit.

If you want the detailed log you can look here:

40k Discussion Best statcheck beater army

I don't know if it is just the local meta in my club or just what 11th is all about but so far I have ran exclusively into toughness statchecks of different kinds: double Landraider Salamander (which were the least bad), Custodes with double Landraider, Black Templars with 2 Repex and a Landraider and today against Necrons with 2 Ctan, silent king and a big unit of wraiths.

What kind of army is out there that packs enough damage to clear those units reliably in 2 or 3 turns?

I own Aeldari and Drukhari and even though I am by no means great at the game it just feels lost from the get go.

40k Discussion Common rules misconceptions / loopholes in 11th so far?

Was wondering what common rules misreads or loopholes people have run into in 11th so far.

I’m asking so we can all get a clearer shared understanding and have cleaner games. The core rules feel pretty tight overall and I’ve been able to shut most things down with clear RAW, but I’m sure there are interactions or wordings that still trip people up (or that rules lawyers are testing).

If you’ve seen any recurring misinterpretations, edge cases that almost sound right, or just heavy rules-lawyering attempts that needed a solid reference to kill, drop them below. Even better if you can note the relevant rule/keyword or how it was resolved.

What’s the biggest “wait, is that actually how it works?” moment you’ve hit so far?

40k List Playing my first RTT tomorrow, review my list and strategy?

So playing my first RTT tomorrow, it’s a pretty casual one. Sadly I’m gena take the 10 point hit per game as I haven’t got my minis painted fully yet, kind of seeing it as a warm up for a couple more serious tournaments coming up in October.

I’ve been having really good results with this list except for into priority assets where it struggles, recently I seem to have found a better strategy for that match up however. I abandon the middle bleeding op on the expansions, then have a late push for middle to deny point scoring turn 4/5. Ideally taking their home turn 5 for the bonus 5. In other match ups in tend to dominate centre so long as it’s only 1 obj in the middle. Bleed op good there and then use my chaff/mobile units to go for secondaries.

Really looking forward to tomorrow so yeah lmk what you think, thanks in advance.

Hello There,

In this video I go through a recent game of World Eaters vs Emperor's Children, looking at the matchup, the lists, and the decisions made throughout the game. Emperor's Children are a particularly difficult matchup for World Eaters, and this game gave me a lot to think about when it comes to how we approach them.

I'll be going through the game turn by turn, talking about my thought process, the decisions I made, and what I could have done differently to give myself a better chance of winning.

Hope you guys enjoy it :) Don't forget to join the Discord, and if you want to support me further and get some additional goodies, have a look at the Patreon.

40k List Dice re-inking legality

One of my armies is a successor chapter of the Dark Angels with a main color of royal purple, silver pauldrons, and seafoam green trim. As such, neither official GW dice nor offerings from Baron of Dice, or even just regular Chessex Dice come in those three colors.

I was looking into re-inking to get closer to my scheme, and the internet says that re-inking, as long as it's done evenly and honestly without intention to alter rolls, is perfectly fine. That was coming more from a roll playing perspective than a competitive wargame.

I've also heard localy that altered dice are altered dice, and therefore shouldn't be used.

I've also looked at commissioning dice, but I wanted to check what the feeling was here first.

Thanks for any and all input!

40k List New player to the game trying to Pick up Orkz

Hey everyone I'm new to the hobby and am trying to learn the game through the rules book and the old codex for Orcs. After the new points came out and the codex on the way I put together a list to try out. Mainly consists of models that I've gotten second hand and passed down to me.

I really like speed freeks and beast snagga units so I wanted to do something revolving around that. My goal was to move fast to play objectives or screen units with my warbikers for the grits to sticky targets. Also skirmish units for purge the foe. I chose beast snaggas not just because I thought the models were cool but they had some good anti vehicle and monster strategies I thought I was lacking in the army.

Just looking for advice on the list. I'm very open to criticism and I'm not completely married to anything on the list I'm even considering removing Da Big Hunt for a take and hold detachment. I know the warhammer 40k app has some bugs like flashgitz only showing units of 4 instead of 5. Thank you for your help in advance!

40k Discussion 11th ed scoring question: Are actions that apply a condition to an objective persistent for scoring?

Using the Reconnaissance mission Triangulation as an example, when we complete the Traingulation action to make an objective "Triangulated", we then score 3vp for one objective Triangulated, 6vp for 2, 10vl for three.

My question is does this refer to successful completions of the action each turn, or are these persistent and cumulative? So would you need to triangulation three each turn over and over to get 10vp each turn? Or if you do three on the first turn then keep scoring for the rest of the game?

I feel like I am overthinking how I am wording this haha, hopefully that was clear.

Edit: Thanks everyone! That makes sense.
