New Student Fall 2026 Admissions Megathread

Congratulations to all the new Wolverines! Please use this thread for topics related to the Early Action + Early Decision decisions that are being released. That could be getting in touch with other admitted students, learning more about starting at U-M, financial aid, etc.

We are not the admissions office, so please contact them for the official word on any of your questions.

Please do not use this thread to post your application stats regardless of if you are admitted, deferred, or denied. Per subreddit rules, chancing or stat posts are not allowed. Comments and posts breaking these rules will be removed.

If you are accepted, congratulations! If you were deferred, make sure you send updated transcripts that provide your grades from the previous semester. You can also submit a continued interest form to let Michigan know you still want to be considered..

Due to the heavy number of Early Action applications Michigan defers a high number of applicants. In recent years a large number of students that were deferred have been offered admission. More details about the application/admission process are also written up in the Wiki.

Housing 2026-27 Housing Megathread

Questions, answers, and information about everything housing can go here. Please let me know if you see anything that needs to be updated or any new information that can be posted/linked to.

Listings:

  • Area Facebook Housing Groups - Facebook group list compiled by u/fluffymoomin - Groups are listed with descriptions as well as safety recommendations. Not all groups are moderated well, be careful regardless of the group, moderators are human. Do not pay money to post in any facebook group. It's a scam. The ones that ask for money are no different, or worse than the free ones. Any reply asking you to message or dm them is likely a scam.

  • UofM offical off-campus housing site - You can now sort by recently updated listings. You can post listings or as a person looking for housing/roomates. They charge for property listings, but offer free sublease listings. Also people simply post in the roommates section that they have a place they are looking to fill as well.

  • Ann Arbor off-campus housing - This was the site that uofm used as their official site until it was replaced with the site above. One of the biggest gripes I had with this version is that commercial properties were updated every day, so sorting by new was tedious to find new listings as a bunch of the same commercial properties would be "updated" each day to be at the top.

  • Zillow (ann arbor) - Zillow

  • Roomies.com - Roomies.com you can search for listings and roommates by location. Even though it's apparently a national site, enough people locally use it that it's worth taking a look at.

  • Apartments.com - Apartments.com

  • ICC Co-ops - Inter-Cooperative Council page for Co-op housing.

  • Craigslist Apartment search - Usually spammed by the same area complexes over and over, which is what made craigslist so hard to use and forced people to facebook. There are still some listings here though, it just takes some scrolling.

  • Ann Arbor Observer Rentlink Housing Search

Resources:

By city ordinance I believe, private renters are supposed to have certificates of occupancy/rental permits from the city. You can search by address. (There will be lots of people who don't have this but it's something to check) *Ann Arbor building rental and inspection services

Social media/community resources:

Past resources:

Remember to exercise caution when looking for housing. Lots of scammers out there. Check their main profiles if on facebook to see if they match the user who reached out to you. See if you can verify them anywhere else that they actually live in the area. Beware of people pushing you to send deposit money without showing you the place. Please refer to the PDF survival guide located at the top of the post. It can save you money and just as importantly time, not having waste time and effort to interact with scammers. Most instances of people telling you to message them as replies to your posts on facebook are scams. Make sure they have listings on the group, not just replies to people looking as comments like that can't be screened. Most legit people will contact you first and have a listing already in the group.

Remember never to give your uofm ID student ID number or a picture of your student ID to a 3rd party site for subleasing.

They can't even verify numbers are valid.

Disclosure could cause limited harm to individuals and/or the university with some risk of civil liability. May be subject to contractual agreements or regulatory compliance, or is individually identifiable, confidential, and/or proprietary.

Fall sublets will be uncommon. Most of the Winter sublets you've seen posted are people who failed to find a Fall-only sublet and are trying to recoup some of the un-used lease remaining. Be especially wary when searching for Fall-only sublets. Scammers count on people being desperate to bypass their warning senses. Some apartment complexes like Woodbury Gardens(2-15 and 21 month), and the complexes owned by Village Green(6 and 9 month) may offer shorter lease terms than 12 month. Be aware the shorter term leases will be more expensive per month. Mckinley Properties don't allow less than 12 month lease but they offer a early termination option which costs 2x monthly rent and requires a 60 day notice. This could be just as good as a shorter lease. I'd confirm it with the leasing office but this should be for all washtenaw county mckinley properties.

The Ann Arbor city bus line can make some affordable locations more practical. Your student ID lets you ride free. A short bus ride can be not too much worse than a medium/long walk. Beware some buses run more commonly than others

If there are any resource additions or corrections let me know.

Social How do you even maintain friendships

I’m aware that there are a million of these posts lately, but the only thing I feel like I can do is just throw another post out there.
I only regularly meet up with the same 2 people only in my math lectures, and all we do is sit and awkwardly solve questions.
I’ve been living in the country for about a year, and I know I shouldn’t jump into conclusions but I feel like whenever I introduce myself and mention my name and where I come from, things sort of feel awkward and it’s like we both just act respectful to each other obviously but it’s not like we actually hit it off.
The only actual thing I did this week was talk to a girl on the other end of the table in the study lounge in Michigan union talking to each other for about a minute about the tornado when our phones just beeped.
It felt like a genuine moment, but she randomly disappeared when we were going to the basement.
I also don’t mean this in an offensive way, but I can’t seem to find people that even seem like they’d be my friends because we’re too different and like vastly different things.
The stress of trying to keep track of all the task deadlines across a dozen different sources isn’t helping with my stress either.
I’m also a freshman commuting about 40 minutes by bus, so I genuinely feel like I have nothing to do with anybody or anything there.
I got a meal plan tho, and the food is very nice. Just thought I’d mention it.

Housing Discussion (actual housing OFFERS belong on Megathread!) Do all dorms have a noise problem?

I'm living on 2nd floor of Strauss at East Quad. People here make me fucking hate extroverted and social people. They sometimes have parties, they scream, they run, they sing and shit. They don't close their doors, so their cute little 12 person gathering CAN BE HEARD FROM A MILE AWAY.

**Does this happen everywhere, or am I just unlucky with my neighbors?**

P.S. If you live near me, PLEASE HAVE YOUR 40 PERSON DISCUSSION IN YOUR ROOM AND WITH THE DOOR CLOSED. I swear to fucking god, it's like I'm at a kindergarten. I though having my window looking out on Hill st. will make me hate life because of frats and their parties and stuff, BUT NO.

Hi I’m a freshman who for medical reasons is not doing very well in this heat. I’ve been trying to find a good spot to cool myself down but I haven’t found a lot of luck. Is there anywhere on campus that has good AC where I can study?

Social Looking for engineering clubs with LESS people

I really would like to join an engineering club and actually build something. My high-school robotics team had over 100 people and people in leadership prevented everyone else from working, so I'm looking for a smaller team (10-25ish) people that build vehicles. Some interests include:

- Custom cars (I like the MRacing team idea but too many people)

- Planes/Miniature aircraft

I have experience with embedded systems and am a freshman that would love to actually assist in prototyping and building something. If you have any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it! The alternative is creating a club but as a freshman, I have little connections/financial knowledge to jumpstart anything serious.

I would say I am a tranfer student but in my last old college, I pretty much knew everyone. I didn't have a typical freshman dorm expierence but I am an extrovert. I went around and tried to stir alot of convos, got alot of instagrams but no one really hits up back again. Only like 5 out of 20 people i rlly connected with? First week of classes and I am already burn out with festifall and making friends alongside applying to internships. Does it get easier with time? All I keep hearing is good freshman stories of social activities going on.

Academics - Other Topics should i drop math 115

i can already tell im gonna struggle heavily with this class. i dont understand anything. i didnt take any sort of calculus class prior to joining. when i took the placement test, they recommended me 105, but i saw somewhere that the credit wouldnt count?? and the only available classes are 8ams, and im ngl, im not waking up at the asscrack of dawn ever again.

i dont think im prepared enough to take the class. is it too late to just take 115 next summer through cc? would i benefit from just dropping it altogether and going that route? for context, im a neuroscience major

Parking / Transit A PSA on Navigating Unreliable Buses! (plus long explanation for those interested)

UPDATE: as soon as I make this post the department does update the data for Google maps and the transit app! Those should be good options to use now.

This year has been plagued with terrible traffic, bus unavailability, a lack of drivers , changes in the scheduling (a single bus changes routes more far frequently over a shift), and how buses are tracked.

THE QUICK SOLUTION: First if you are using Google Maps or the Transit app then stop!!! Those apps are relying on summer data and the fall routes and schedules were never uploaded. If you are using the Mbus app, switch to Maizebus (or UM Magic Bus) which is getting updates and will show you if a bus is actually live tracking, or if it's simply "scheduled". This is a new change to the data where Mbus and the CCTC departure boards groups both together, meaning with lots of canceled trips lots of buses will never actually turn up.

Ok now heres a long and detailed explanation for why things are happening.

One of the biggest reasons is there are simply not enough buses available for service and drivers (as of now) to operate all the shifts. The driver side will likely improve soon, but the buses are much harder to fix. There is a massive battery recall that affects most of our electric buses which is taking a few out of service at a time for full battery replacement, and also limiting the maximum and speed of charge while they wait for replacement. This limits the number of hours they are available for service. The recent pile up at the CCTC on Monday was also the result of an electric bus failure, which can be quite common. However regardless there just are too many broken buses waiting to be fixed.

As commuter shifted to a new and more frequent timetable (every 5 min now), all of the bus shifts were reconfigured and lots of shifts were added. Shifts are now split up across far more routes, meaning a bus might start driving Bursley Baits, switch to Northwood, Commuter, back to Bursley Baits, and finish with a loop of Wall Street. Before it might be all one route. Within those shifts, there are also often a bunch of stupid repositioning. A Bursley bus might head to central in service, go out of service back to north, and then head back to central back in service. This is exactly why you all of a sudden are seeing so many buses going out of service at end points like the CCTC. Theoretically departures haven't changed, but with many delays and cancellations this quickly breaks down.

There also was a recent change in the API data that all the tracking apps use. The data always had live departures, which is a bus physically tracking along the route, and is pretty reliable barring traffic. However, a recent change was made to include scheduled departures when the system isn't tracking a live bus for that specific run (the block of trips that a bus will make). This can be very useful as a bus with a broken cellular connection or other computer issue will still be made available for you. It's why in years past you would see "No Departures" when there's really a bus in 5 min. However, this quickly breaks down when we have a large bus and driver shortage resulting in lots of canceled trips, and the API doesn't reflect these changes.

The Maizebus and MagicBus apps I think are the only ones that differentiate Live vs Scheduled when you click on departures for a stop. I would highly recommend switching to one of those as regardless the Mbus app is quite old and not receiving updates anymore. Bonus for Magicbus (despite terrible UI) is it shows detours by far the best out of any app. Hopefully we should see reliability of the cellular connections improve in the coming months as things get repaired or replaced.

I hope this answers a lot of questions to the frustrations that you might have, and I will try to answer any questions to the best of my knowledge. I've spent a lot of time over the summer looking at the API data for a personal project and regardless as a student driver I get the inside scoop on a lot of this. Thanks!
