well it's a small school because it's a small town with not that many people.

as for groceries and other items, i guess they have to go out of town for that? there are many people who have to do that irl.

I’m imagining that Sans has a lot of essentials that are just not shown in-game. Stuff like milk, butter, cereal, cleaning supplies, pet food, and such - I’ve seen this in some local convenience stores. Some things would require a trip to an outside grocery store, though, like ground meat or fresh vegetables.

The real problem IMO is that there’s nowhere to get gasoline. We’ve seen Toriel’s van by her house, Asgore’s truck by Flower King, and a whole host of sedans in Chapter 2. What do you do if you run out of gas in Hometown? Siphon it from someone else’s car to make it to an actual gas station?

Remember that Sans only moved into town "this week" though. He brought a store. Before that people probably had to go out of town.

Then, I think either:

- Residents went to the distant off-screen grocery store before Sans opened his store. His store is in a much more convenient location, giving him his niche. It’s also a simple explanation for something that doesn’t need much explaining.

- Grillby used to own the store (which is why it looks almost exactly like his restaurant in Undertale) and sold it to Sans. I doubt Sans could go from an empty building to an operational store in less than a week, but if Grillby decided to quit running his store and sold it soon after, the appliances and furniture could still be there.

Maybe Grillby sold it to Sans before he moved in and Sans had it converted before he showed up.

my god… I forgot him, the best character in all of fiction… I’m washed… please show me how to get my Deltarune fan card revoked

The problem is no one wants to buy the milk after it’s been looked at so much :(

In a small town like this I wouldn’t be surprised if the nearest gas station is one that’s placed between towns so one station could serve multiple towns.

u/twolake68 10h ago

Tbf I'm pretty sure there's a street we never see if I'm remembering right

But also unless you actually want to leave the town everything is within walking distance in it, like there's no real reason to get into a car to go to school or whatever else you'd want to do when you can just walk the like 5-8 minutes it'd take to get there

The only exception I can really see to this is if it's extremely cold outside or if someone is really injured

I mean, it could be magic who knows

3

u/CitruxX_ 9h ago

That either proves nothing exists outside Hometown, or disproves it.

You could argue that they really do go out of town for these types of things. For all we know, a whole other town could exist right outside the police tape to the left of the station.

However, you could also argue that video game logic makes it so that they never have and won’t ever need to buy anything at all. A lot of NPCs don’t even have houses, ignoring however many of them might live in the apartment buildings.

u/j5erikk 15h ago

I mean we just also aren't shown the entire town, we skip some streets of houses, and there could be more classes, that we just don't get to see because of perspective and stuff

u/generouslyemotional 👁👁 13h ago

You've sorta just gotta assume the same logic that the undertake 10th anniversary said about the underground

There's an entire world there, the fact that you as the player don't personally see a clothing store or whatever in the 3 streets you can explore doesn't mean that one doesn't exist in a palace that just you can't access

-27

u/Muted-League-6911 12h ago

Except, not really, it’s kinda implied nothing exists outside the town

15

u/NormalDooder 10h ago

Meta wise none of these characters need anything because they're just fake code. Despite the passage of time most characters wear the same clothes everyday anyways, so why need a clothed store

u/anime_fan_girl_me chaos of life ‎ 6h ago

Only reason for a clothes store is to find soup

1

u/The7Skys 4h ago

Because naked stores are weird imo

1

u/Axodique Among us 4h ago

Why are you booing them, they're right!

0

u/Determined_memories 4h ago

True, though likely they were given pre-determined things and memories that would make them think that something exists out there, so to them there is something out there, just the roads are closed, even if that something being out there isn't truly the case

u/Spectre234678 13h ago

There is at least one street we don't see. See how the roofs on the Blook House screen doesn't line up with the buildings below them, or how the alleyway seemingly leads straight into the Lake? There's a street between. That street between might link up to more streets and buildings we don't see

There is a street between.

16

u/millionwordsofcrap 12h ago

One of my favorite theories rn. Kris has been closing their eyes to hide a whole street from us. If it ends up being actually true I WILL freak out

13

u/Mr_Phoenix_E ‎ Fox (got soup?) 15h ago

Small towns generally don't have any place to buy those things.

12

u/Anariko8 15h ago

Car is not a basic thing, OP

5

u/verstacko 9h ago

tbf car IS a basic thing in the USA, and Hometown is theorized to be located in an alternative version of Massachusetts.

6

u/Blue-Azul 14h ago

Also we don't really know how small the town actually is. There could be any number of streets and buildings behind the police tape

If hometown being weird and unrealistic doesn't become a plot point I'm going to be very sad

The one by kris' home is the holiday manor. The two apartment buildings lead to a dead end alleyway.

Programmers having to build entire functioning cities in order to make their game realistic

2

u/Left-Second3310 11h ago

Once again. There are areas we as the player do not get to see despite sticking our nose everywhere we can. Example: the flower room where Susie and Blue talk. If you try to go back there after that cut scene you just go to the prison where the Yellow and Blue fight happened.

2

u/VoxinCariba 10h ago

Many people have theorized that there are areas of the town that you kind of skip over when you go from one area to another. Like, the town might actually be way bigger than what we can see in the game.

This is kind of supported by the fact that there are way more inhabitants than could reasonably be housed in the different houses in Hometown, and that there are some buildings in the town that aren't really accessible by any means shown in the game. For example, in the alley between the two apartment blocks, you can see that there's another building at the end of it, but you can't access it.

2

u/Otherversian-Elite 10h ago

A chunk of the town is blocked off by police tape, and the dimensions of the alleyway by the apartments implies at the very least an entire stretch of road, possibly an entire row of buildings, that we simply never see. We don't seem to have the whole picture.

Suspension of disbelief. I don't know about you, but I think deltarune might have genuinely never came out if toby had to make Hometown plausable

2

u/NanoblackReaper_ 8h ago

You have to accept that Toby just doesn't care to show what isn't needed. Yeah, maybe there are more houses and buildings we don't see, but just because logically they need a place to buy clothes, cars, etc, doesn't mean Toby needs to add it.

I think it's dymbed down for gameplay purposes, like how blocks look merely couple Krises wide

1

u/Instinct_Fazbear Bashii64 12h ago

The school also does not have a visible cafeteria

1

u/Subhan999 12h ago

In some schools and especially elementary schools the students pack their own lunches and eat in the classrooms at their desks

1

u/Instinct_Fazbear Bashii64 11h ago

Oh damn, didn't know that.

Main reason why I believe there’s nothing outside of hometown not saying that’s the only option just saying that’s why I don’t question it

u/I_Am_A_Thermos 9h ago

The clothes technology video game car store/ appartment complex is behind the police tape... of course

It's also missing an exit, which is really strange.

Cars aren't necessary bc of how small the town is (ig for going other places tho, but they don't seem to rlly do that)

And video games aren't a basic need either 😭

1

u/WiFi2347 7h ago

The only place my real life hometown has is a Dollar General

1

u/Far-Expression-1384 6h ago

its honestly very likely less is shown because it doesn't really need to be. it wouldnt add a lot to the game if you could see all the parts of hometown that get glossed over, yk?

1

u/Foxyfox- 6h ago

Hometown is bigger than the game shows us. Notice how the tops of numerous buildings are cut off in the very combined map you posted? And in the town hall there's a picture of the town which shows more streets and buildings than we see in game.

Sometimes space compression is just space compression and that's ok.

1

u/GameCenter101 5h ago

this is how american small towns are irl by the way.

1

u/Alignedsubset 4h ago

The school has a second floor we don't see. And there is whatever's past the police tape. And the traffic jam has a whole bunch of cars we don't see all of.

1

u/HumorAny6404 4h ago

Sans just pulls it out of thin air

1

u/HumorAny6404 4h ago

You walk in, hand him 20 grand, and ask for a Honda Civic and he goes into the back and it appears outside.

1

u/magicdog2013 Koa 2007-2024 3h ago

It's either beyond the tape, or considering the layers don't line up properly, there's a bunch more buildings inbetween screen transitions that we don't get to see because they're irrelevant to the story

1

u/Jonbux_ 3h ago

Something I found weird is than Catty (the older one) said she was at the movies... Does hometown have that?

1

u/hussiesucks 3h ago

No, it’s just to the west

I have been in towns with no schools at all

Also, hometown is missing a central row of buildings.

1

u/B1bister4 56m ago

My own hometown have no school, no grocery store, no medical center.

Hometown is pretty well served.

  1. its a video game. video game graphics are inherently representative and not literal.

  2. it has the essentials for life, actually! I've lived in towns that have even LESS than hometown has. the answer is you head out of town to do your shopping. I had to drive 40 minutes to a grocery store (walmart). I had to drive 60 minutes if I wanted to buy clothes anywhere other than walmart. ALL of my tech was from walmart.

walmart was honestly the answer to everything. hometown probably has a walmart 20 minutes outside town. it's pretty common in rural areas.
