South Park has been going through this for a while now, Starting in season 20 when they tried to basically make a movie split into 10 parts, then a couple of seasons later Stan's Family moved to Tegridy farms, basically turning it into the "Randy Marsh show", then most recently it turned into the "**HE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED** And Satan Show", im gonna be real, if Family Guy did exactly what South Park did in its most recent season, everyone would have called it the most poorly done, lazy satire there is, now to note, I fucking hate **HE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED** But I would at least appreciate it if the jokes were fresh, and not the same 4 jokes repeated over and over again

1. Taylor Swift : Real Life: probably the most disgusting example. When she got engaged many fans lost their minds insisting Swift had to be gay or bi and could never marry a man.

   Swift is a real person and trying to demand her romance life validate you is selfish and more than a little creepy.

2. Sherlock and Watson: in the original novels Watson eventually got married. His and Holmes relationship was always platonic

3. The Ur Example of this Trope: Frodo and Samwise became close friends by surging their ordeal together. There never was any romantic subtext to their relationship.

Here I include characters whose only point in the story is that they want to get married. They don't have a life outside of work or future plans; they just live waiting to get married and will almost literally come on to any idiot for a date. What bothers me most is that it's not very believable in context, given that they're waifus, and one immediately wonders, "How can such a beautiful woman be single?"

1) Kurama - Urusei Yatsura.

The Crow Princess, who appears as a sleeping princess, is destined, according to tradition, to marry the first man who kisses her, which is Ataru. Later, she learns that the tradition originated when a crow woke his girlfriend with a kiss, finding it so beautiful that he wanted them to be engaged in this way. Since the tradition's origin is silly, Kurama abandons it, thus ending his character arc. This is highlighted in the movie.

2) Luna of Konosuba

So you're probably wondering, "What the heck are you talking about?" Even after reading all 17 volumes of the novel, I wouldn't have believed it either. In the main story, Luna is limited to being the Guild receptionist and giving directions or explanations to Kazuma and his party. However, in the prequel or concurrent spin-offs, Luna's role is that of a spinster looking for a husband, even considering Kazuma in her own timeline.

To a certain extent, She even tries to do something with Vanir, unaware that Vanir is a demon and in this world they don't have genitals or gender.

3) Grimm de combatants will be dispatched. In the girl's own words, she dreams of getting married so she won't be a failure anymore. And yes, her joke is that she flirts with every man she meets until he rejects her, humiliating herself in the process. She claims to be frightening to ordinary people, but as the chapters progress, it becomes implied that it's not because she's a priestess of an evil goddess or because she's undead. With a good script, the author could explore the acceptance of this concept, but since this is the same author as Konosuba, the reason Grimm is single is because she's a femme fatale, a very unpleasant woman with anger issues, who quickly creates a soap opera in her head and will curse you over trivial matters if she's disappointed.

I emphasize this because, as the story unfolds, we see her going to restaurants and bars, she organizes a festival, people approach her to act as an interpreter between spirits and villagers, and two lesbians even become interested in Grimm at some point in the story. But to drive the final nail into the coffin, at a certain point in the story, Grimm is cursed so that she can never meet good men, and from that point on, she goes from being the woman desperate for a husband to the spare suitor who sees the protagonist as her "worse than having no one."

It does remind me of how Doña Cleotilde flirted with Don Ramón in El Chavo del Ocho, and there it made sense, given that Doña Cleotilde was old enough to find other men, but not so old that she didn't feel the need to be loved, and naturally, Don Ramón, being a widow, wasn't looking for sugar mommies.

2. Howard Wolowitz (The Big Bang Theory) looks to be the lost fifth member of The Beatles.

I have noticed that for many long running tv series characters will start out very static and multi faceted and as the show continues they slowly morph into a representation of one single part of their personality and become very flat. I feel like a few examples would be Temperence Brennen in Bones, who started out as a badass forensic anthropologist that was headstrong about her work and lacked a few social cues, but slowly she morphed into this awkward dorky person with zero social awareness. Another example I can think of is Rosa Diaz from B99. I’m rewatching the first few seasons and she was a much more static character in season 1 than she was in the later seasons. I feel like some examples of this could be due to the characters not having much relevance to the show so the writers don’t put as much effort into the the depth of their characters but Brennen is literally the main character and she morphed into something so flat. Anyways is this phenomenon a named trope?

Cinderella----The abusive wicked stepmother.

Friday the 13th---Pamela Voorhees, turns out to be the initial killer.

Carrie---Margaret White, a religious fanatic and not allowing Carrie to live a normal life.

Throw Mamma from the Train----Mamma Lift, abusive to her grown son

This is admittedly not super common but it nonetheless annoys me on the rare occasions I see it. There’s tons of times a character reaches out an arm while trying to do something and the direness of the situation finally lets them unlock that power. That trope is fine. But it’s so stupid looking when a character reaches out an arm without even knowing about a power’s existence and that power manifests. Like, what was their actual game plan if this new ability didn’t pop up? What were they originally thinking they’d accomplish?

1) Korra (Legend of Korra) unlocking her Airbending. Korra only had access to Earth, Fire, and Waterbending at the start of the show. She tried Airbending but repeatedly failed to unlock it. Amon has just bloodbent her brain and blocked the chi paths for her main 3 bending styles. Korra throws a punch and is confused that her body airbent. If she was actually trying to finally Airbend here, I’d have no issues. It’d be in line with the dire situation trope. But her own confusion that the punch resulted in Airbending means that she must’ve been trying any of the 3 already blocked bending styles. What were you hoping for Korra? What were you trying to bend when you know you’re chi blocked?

2) Eren (Attack on Titan) activates The Coordinate. The Coordinate has the power to control Titans but typically could only activate when someone with the power of The Founding Titan was part of the Eldian royal bloodline. Now Eren has the Founding Titan and the Titan he punches was part of the royal family during their life as a human. But Eren didn’t know either of these facts when he threw that punch. Fortunately he lucked out that the physical contact with royalty let him briefly use The Coordinate to make other Titans attack the royal Titan. But what was he trying to do without that lucky break? He just told Mikasa that he’d protect her. That he’d wrap her scarf around her as many times as needed. Yet his very next move was to fist fight a Titan. A fight he had to have known was impossible to win. Eren has always been reckless and prone to self destruction but he just vowed long term protection of Mikasa. So what was his game plan here?

3) Nero (Devil May Cry 5) unlocks his Devil Trigger. Nero is trying to stop his dad and uncle from killing each other. They’re both like a mile away at the top of a demonic tree. He’s running after them on foot and all the emotional turmoil coupled with his resolve to be better this time around unlocks his demonic powers. He grows wings made from his demon energy and regrows his arm. But… why was his arm outstretched? Who was he reaching for? He can’t see his family. They can’t see him. He’s reaching at nothing. And it’s definitely not like he intended that move to pair with his newfound flying abilities because he has to retract the arm before properly taking off. The only reason I can see for it is just a money shot of his arm regrowing. But in-universe, he has zero reason to reach out. It achieves nothing. What’re you trying to grab, Nero?

When a story developps around complexe characters, political dilemma and no clear side to root for... and then, a third faction clearly evil and willing to end the world appears and the story decides to turn itself into a war between good and evil, often in the form of some kind of zombie apocalypse or primordial evil going to destroy everything which forces the two sides to collaborate.

Arcane :

The conflict between Pilltover and Zaun is the heart of the story during all the season one and a good part of the season two... then it is totally forgotten to make everyone sides together against Viktor, leading an army of zombies to erase all free will. After it, the conflict between Pilltover and Zaun is barely adressed with just one side character having a seat at the council.

Game of Throne :

The show did it three time one could say. Hot take but i always disliked the White Walkers, yes it was set up since the very first scene... but i still think it was a bad idea to have this zombie invasion as a main threat for a show with a complexe political story and protagonists being mostly shades of grey. it is not a story fitting for an unambigiously evil race like they are, i'm here for the realistic conflicts between the houses, not for a zombie horde disconnected from all the political stuff, to have the main final threat being them was lame. Technically they aren't exactely the final threat but it works too, because Cersei is without any contest the villain by opposition to Danearys..., and the show turns also Danearys into an unquestionnable evil queen with the "good guys" having to kill her for peace.

World of Warcraft :

Quite the core of the story is the struggle between the Alliance and the Horde, both sides having understandable reasons to dislike or hate each other and legitimate revendications, often incompatible... but always, soon or latter the conflict will stop because a bigger common ennemy will appear who is just clearly evil and they will stop to fight for a moment, or even ally together.

Xenk Yendar (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves)

Xenk “kills” several Thayan assassins, led by Dralas, using a sword that holds a dagger within its center and can shoot the sword blade as a projectile. Dralas disarms him of the sword blade after a lengthy duel, but Xenk almost immediately wins once he gets in close.

King Jerrod (Mortal Kombat II)

Mortal Kombat II opens with the duel between Shao Kahn of Outworld and King Jerrod of Edenia, with the fate of Edenia in the balance. Jerrod puts up a good fight but is clearly outmatched, but once Shao breaks his sword with his hammer, Jerrod starts to put the “warrior” in “warrior king” and shows why he was considered the best fighter in the realm. He nearly kills Shao, but fails at the last second and loses his life.

Be warned.

An aborted story arc occurs when an author establishes or foreshadows an event—whether directly or indirectly within the plot—that is eventually going to happen.

Then something happens, and suddenly this arc is interrupted, either within the plot itself or for reasons external to the plot (e.g., the author fell ill and had to rush things, etc.).

The reason this is considered a mixed trope is that it can be misleading to the audience and frustrating. If an author intends to do this consciously, it’s best for them to clearly establish that something like this might happen in their story and prepare the audience for possible aborted story arcs—which can sometimes even serve as a plot twist for the story— but honestly, it’s not something that should be done casually; rather, one should have some preparation and experience with this type of trope, and when it’s done for external reasons, it’s best for the audience to be warned or prepared.

Note: Sometimes certain games (especially those with more than one route) may have this option.

The Sopranos S2 ( Richie Aprile Death ): The entire second season of The Sopranos revolved around a clash between Tony Soprano and Richie Aprile; both clearly disliked each other, especially Richie Aprile, who was stuck in the past and refused to accept that the mafia had changed—he wanted everything to work the way it did in the old days (or, as he put it, “the old school”).

Richie Aprile tried to smooth things over with Tony by giving him a jacket that he would wear and would only give to trusted members of the “old school”—which Tony didn’t care much about and ended up giving to his housekeeper’s husband. Richie saw this and felt EXTREMELY OFFENDED, and half the season is about him plotting to take Tony’s life and take his place as boss of the mafia; even Janice was encouraging him to take all of Tony’s power.

Until, in the penultimate episode of Season 2, Richie has an argument with Janice that culminates in her pulling out her gun and shooting Richie, killing him on the spot and cutting short his entire character arc and his eventual power grab against Tony (who, one way or another, would have ended up dying anyway).

Jujutsu Kaisen ( Naoya Zennin Death): His plan to murder Megumi and become the clan leader ends up failing completely, not only because his entire clan was massacred by Maki, but also because it all came to an end with his own murder at the hands of Maki’s mother shortly thereafter. His intended victim (Megumi) never even finds out who he is.

Breaking Bad ( Tuco Death): Originally, in the initial plans for the second season of Breaking Bad, Tuco was supposed to be the season’s main villain, luring Walter and Jesse into a trap and forcing them into a life-or-death struggle to escape his clutches.

However, the actor playing Tuco couldn’t emotionally handle portraying such an evil and depraved character and chose to leave the series, resulting in his entire story arc in the second season having to be scrapped and his appearance reduced to just two episodes—the second of which is the episode in which he is killed by Hank.

The Snyderverse: Zack Snyder had a plan for a shared universe for his DCU. Everything was going relatively well, despite some issues with the films in this universe (such as the controversial Man of Steel ).

However, after the release of Batman v Superman, Snyder’s daughter sadly passed away, which forced him to step away from the production of Justice League and resulted in his script being altered at the last minute. Not only that, but Warner Bros. was already working on a NEW DCU directed by James Gunn, which led to all the films planned for the Snyderverse being either canceled or having their connections to the old DCU reduced or severed, with the Flas* movie being the final nail in the coffin.

The closest we’ve come to seeing what this world created by Snyder would have been like was the Justice League Snyder Cut, which gave us a glimpse albeit a rushed one without a solid conclusion as to what this universe would have been like in its entirety.

The Be A Man Guy (@bostonbeaman)
Went viral with a video where he says some nonsense like "Don't go to therapy. Suffer." Finishes with "be a man". Someone outside the frame laughs like it's the funniest shit ever. Every single video is the same. The forced laughter every time is what makes the bit especially annoying.

Khaby Lame
The poster child of this trope. Went viral with a bit where he was mocking life hacks from other TikTok creators, always with the face expression from the picture. At one point, he was the most popular TikTok creator ever. This face expression is basically his brand.

Charisa Bossinakis
Went viral with a video where she did a parody of Gal Gadot's acting. To give her some credit, she makes other videos, but only her Gal Gadot's parodies go viral and get views. Also it seems like r/okbuddycinephile reposts every single one of them.

1. One of the 1999 Nick.com clickamajigs was called La La lamp and the instructions simply said "Like, Click and drag man" when youtuber Keep Tappin X played it, Colby read it in a Jamaican accent then Blake said to read it like a hippy/stoner

2. In Gumball, when the brothers were made to do a "reverse spell" Gumbal says the sentence again but with the words in the opposite order, then Darwin says he has to actually say it in reverse

3. Idk if this is the same type but a tiktoker once read the tweet in #3 and tried to find the correct way to say it, either in an accusing way "like the person called him out for eating beans" or in a surprised way "like the person couldn't believe he was eating beans in a theater"

(Note, since I bet someone will say it, Stewie's Cool Hwip does not count because that is a silly pronunciation, this trope is when its the correct pronouncing but the way they say it/the zeitgeist is silly)

When the protagonist or other main characters are dumbfounded while trying to figure out exactly WHO a certain character is…

Matt Graver (Sicario) : when we see the initial debriefing scene (following the failed raid) from Kate’s perspective, Denis Villeneuve deliberately focuses on Graver’s sandals and then his clothes at the very beginning. Cementing a stark contrast between him and the rest of the powerful men in the room - all in uniforms and sitting upright…then you have Graver in Khakis and sandals in the very same room, casually lounging on the chair, telling the uniforms what to do. Thats the first time Kate starts pondering on the gravity of what was happening and who this guy even was, on the same table as her boss.

Lorne Malvo (Fargo) : when Gus stops a seemingly random car late at night and follows the standard procedures of a routine check, Malvo calmly escalates the situation simply through words, to a point where Gus is quite literally left standing there like a deer in a headlight. A personal favourite scene of mine…”There Be Dragons”…CHILLS! Although its never shown that Gus begins to outright question what was happening or who Malvo was, after Malvo just casually drove away, I am sure Gus was thinking along those lines…Billy Bob owned every single scene with this role. Even the scene with Lester at the hospital is another good example of this trope.

The Equalizer : Robert McCall tries to buy a girl’s freedom for 9,800 dollars from the Russian Mafia. Russian Mafia laughs at him and asks him to jerk off 9,800 times instead. Robert McCall fights his thoughts for five seconds before brutally murdering the entire room in nineteen seconds. Robert McCall leaves the gang leader to bleed out on the “funky floor” for 9,800 dollars…another scene I absolutely love where each gang member gets a final couple of seconds to probably think to themselves “who the hell is this guy”…along with the audience.

Bonus: In Sicario 2, right before Matt briefs the Rangers, the camera once more zooms in on his sandals and shorts. Once more cementing how he’s been doing this for so long and in such an effective manner, that the room simply adjusts to him looking like he just came off of a fishing boat!

For context: It is when the next instalment of a PlayStation gaming franchise improves their gameplay such as combat and etc but when it comes to the story, it is a complete downgrade while also ruining the impact of the first one. An example of this is MSM 2 where it made Peter a complete wimp by making him be defeated easily by a fridge.

2. The Ice King (Adventure Time)- When Princess Bubblegum has de-aged to 13 years old, Ice King was like, I’m not going to marry a child/teen.”
   
3. Eggman in Sonic X told Black Narcissus that he doesn’t like the way Narcissus tortured Chris and Cosmo.

1. Pym Particle suits (Ant-Man and co) -- I know they technically work by leveraging the shrinking effect of Pym particles, but it's overall just lazy since they just tap and the suit is just there
2. CW Supergirl -- same problem (DC example just so we're clear this isn't exclusively a Marvel thing)
3. MCU Kang's mask -- it feels more like a snapchat filter you can toggle rather than an actual piece of hardware

Edit: This also applies when the internal sci-fi explanation is different from nanotech, but the visual execution is the same

WHO GOT IT RIGHT:

1. Iron Man (Mark 50 & 85): it's not just an "instant spandex" it's nuanced, you can actually see the nanites assemble the inner portion of the suit (like circuitry and stuff) followed by the red and gold exterior. Also there are physical contraints and considerations, such as Tony having to strategically allocate nanites depending on what he wants to do and facing the possibility of running out of nanites
2. Black Panther (upgraded Panther Habit from 2018 onwards): it's not just an instant spandex either. It's structured with woven vibranium (not solid plate like the shield) and has the kinetic absorption feature. There's also physical constraints and weaknesses such as being disrupted by a strong electromagnetic field (like in the vibranium mines)

IImagine if I discover that my neighbor is a serial killer, but I decide not to report it to the police because I forgive him. That would be bullshit—the world doesn't revolve around me, and I don't speak for the victims. Sometimes that's how it feels when the main characters forgive some villains who did vile acts and they get scot-free.

The Alethi (Stormlight Arcives) - The Alethi are described as having epicanthic folds and generally having tanned - brown skin with black hair . Their culture also generally shares very little in common with The West from our world

The Fremen (Dune) - The Fremen become the most powerful race in the Galactic Empire after Pauls ascendency . Their culture , society and religion are heavily inspired by Arabs and the Middle East .

Hated examples:

Bellatrix Lestrange (Harry Potter): she always was portrayed as a huge threat, being one of the world’s most dangerous criminals and one of Voldemort’s most trusted followers, having also killed Sirius Black and tortured Neville’s parents to the point of insanity. All that said, the one who ends her is Molly Weasley, Ron’s mom who was always portrayed as an ordinary housewife, because Bellatrix was fighting Ginny… at a war.

Madara Uchiha (Naruto): this one is infamous amongst fans, since Madara was portrayed as this legendary ninja and all around badass who was beating anyone that fought him (including the protagonists), until he’s backstabbed by Black Zetsu, a very minor secondary villain, in order to make way for another villain to show up at the final stretch of the manga.

Zamasu (Dragon Ball): Zamasu’s wish to be immortal was able to preserve his soul and consciousness, though his body was destroyed, leaving him as an unkillable spirit that covered the whole planet, allowing him to destroy Future Trunks’ Earth.
The solution? Goku pressed a button given to him by Zeno (a childlike ruler of all reality) which summoned that timeline’s version of him, who doesn’t know who Goku is, and they ask for his help and Zeno is like “okay, sure” and just erases the universe in a few seconds. There, problem solved!

Liked Examples:

Gabriel (Constantine): at death’s door, John is visited by Lucifer, who came to take his soul to Hell himself, given John’s sinful past and constant dealings with demons. That, as it turns out, is part of Constantine’s plan, seeing as he tells Lucifer that Gabriel is just next door trying to bring the Antichrist to the world and start Armageddon, which Lucifer doesn’t want, causing him to intervene and stop Gabriel’s plans and “save the day”.

Askeladd (Vinland Saga): this one is a little iffy since Canute is very relevant to manga overall, but bear with me.
In your usual story, Askeladd would have been killed by Thorfinn, who dedicated his whole life to get stronger and avenge his father, but, contrary to that notion, Askeladd makes up a plan, on the spot, to have Canute kill him after he killed King Sweyn “in a fit of madness”, granting Canute a free path to take the throne legitimately as well as saving Askeladd’s homeland, while also indirectly setting Thorfinn on his journey to become a better person.

Yoshikage Kira (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable): one of Kira’s core traits is that he was extremely lucky, managing to squeeze out of the direst predicaments he found himself in, so, fittingly, he’s actually killed by pure bad luck, since the ambulance that was called to rescue him ends up running over his head, breaking his neck in the process.
Not only that, in the afterlife, he’s tricked by his first victims’ ghosts, Reimi and her dog Arnold, in order to be sent to Hell.

I guess this isn't a trope, but I can't be the only one that has a side character they adore, who completely steals the show whenever they are on screen, but they tragically barely show up?

Julian - High Kick 2
Julian stands out in High Kick as he's a Canadian immigrant that moved to Korea. He is incredibly funny because how thick his accent is whenever he tries to speak Korean, and he's also incredibly chill and just a cool and likeable guy. Sadly, he only has like 8 significant episodes out of 130

Number 84 - Kids Next Door
Kids Next Door was a childhood favorite of mine, and I specifically remember having this kid as my favorite agent. He's considered a rookie agent, but 84 has one of the coolest fighting styles with his Yo-yos. Sadly he only ever appears in 3 episodes in the entire series

Radley - Bluey

I love this guy's design, cool uncle personality, and dynamic with all of Bluey's family. WHY IS HE ONLY IN 3 EPISODES AND INTRODUCED HALFWAY THROUGH SEASON 2???
