Open | Hardware İs it possible for me to solve my laptop's screen's problem by hitting it so hard?

Upvotes

My laptop's screen use to stop working and jsut turn into black slowly. ı use to solve it temporarily by like apllying pressure to spesific parts of the screen (which was so annoying but it made it possible for me to use it for some time)

yesterday I was playing cs go and that happened again, The heat made it worse, This issue happened more often when I played games. I was already a noob and my screen kept freezing and turn into black slowly. My teammeats said stupid stuff to me which made me really mad (I know this is so stupid but It was really wasnt my fault)

I hit my laptop so hard that my hand hurt but the thing is the screen doesnt freeze or turn into black anymore. İt's fixed after I hit it really really hard several times. I opened one of the games which made my screen turn black constantly to test it and the screen was normal like it didnt freezed or turned black slowly. The issue is fixed for some reason

İs this permanent? It's hard to think that I solved it permanently but I really hope it did

Open | Hardware What is that thing at the tip of a stylus pen?

I have an old tablet that came without a pen when I bought it. Lately, I've gotten interested in drawing and whenever I get the chance, I try to draw something on this tablet. But I can't make precise drawings with my finger. I made a pen with a cotton tip and aluminum foil, but for this pen to work, I constantly have to moisten the cotton at the tip, and after a while, the cotton falls apart as I moisten it, so it's not very reliable.

Before taking the easy way and buying a touchscreen pen, I'm curious if I can make a pen with materials I have at home. I guess the tip of commercially sold pens is made of soft silicone, but I'm not sure since I've never looked closely before. Has anyone made such a pen? What materials could work?

Open | Software Stuttering in Games when moving my mouse diagonally

So I recently have gotten this issue as when I move my mouse diagonally in a game it stutters, moving my mouse straight on x and y axis its smooth though, Things I have tried,

  1. re-installing my graphics drivers both using DDU to completely remove the drivers to then install
  2. Using my integrated graphics instead of my main video card
  3. Using a different monitor - yields the same result
  4. Re-installing AMD chipset drivers
  5. Tried running an SFC scan in command prompt to no avail
  6. Using different USB ports on my PC
  7. Updating my BIOS
  8. Using device manager to update/re-install USB Drivers
  9. Refreshing the display by using ctrl+win+shift+B
  10. Turning off fullscreen optimizations in the selected games
  11. Turning on and off hardware accelerated scheduling
  12. Using different peripherals

The only thing that seems to fix it is re-installing windows entirely, I have done this about 12 times in the past week. I have also tried making windows NOT install drivers as soon as i had reinstalled windows but as soon as i reboot my pc the issue comes back games just stutter when i move my mouse diagonally again, thing to note, i used an overlay to track and see if my frame pacing was bouncing during the stuttering but it is not at all its as flat as can be, I'm genuinely so confused as to what it could be, I have tried also turning off any sort of overlays that could be conflicting with my mouse/game, using both my graphics card and integrated graphics for output also switching monitors tells me it isn't a display issue as such however I'm still stumped as to what it could be, absolutely any help would be much appreciated, thanks

System Specs:

GPU - Palit RTX 3080 10GB

Open | Networking How to change NAT type using VPN (or any other methods) for Nintendo Switch

Hi reddit! My boyfriend is away for college and the wifi he uses at the apartments on campus has a NAT type D which is restricting him from being able to play online games with me like mario kart 🙁. He has been trying to use ExpressVPN to change the NAT type from a video he saw but has not been successful. The part that mainly has not been successful is him not being able to connect his nintendo switch to his laptops hotspot (which has the VPN on it to help change the NAT type from strict to moderate). If anyone knows any other method of changing the NAT type so that we can game online with each other via nintendo switch, your input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Open | Hardware My laptop is stuck at 0%, and it doesnt charge. But it turns on and i can use it as normal.

Upvotes

Okay so this just happened to me today.. I was using my laptop as usual and i noticed that it wouldn't take a charge, it was stuck at 0% even tho it was charging. i troubleshooted it, deleted, reinstalled the drivers for the battery and AC, Did a hard reset on the power button, Disconnected the battery and held the power button for 30 seconds and 60 seconds the second time and its stil stuck at 0%.

So a brief history of this laptop i got, this lenovo m415da was given to me by my aunt 2 monthssince she never really uses it. The laptop had been rotting in her room for like a year and a half without even charging it. So like, im curious if thats the reason why the battery just decided to break today.. Or maybe not..?- I mean, the battery health was still good when i checked.. Can someone help me with this? do i really have to buy a new battery for this laptop or is the old one still saveable?? (sorry for my bad grammar.. huhu..)

after a couple weeks of not using my laptop, I try to turn it on and nothing happens, there's no charging light when I try to charge it, except from one time I tried charging it they flashed, and because of this and the fact that I replaced the keyboard myself a while ago, I thought there may be a bad connection somewhere, but I opened it up and nothing looked out of place, any ideas ?

Open | Hardware Screen flickering HELP

Upvotes

I had a problem with my laptop screen being normal and then really bright that I could fix with gently slamming the laptop on the table but this time it was not going back to normal and I increased and stupidly (I know) slammed harder and harder wich made the problem much worse because now instead of flickering into normal state and real bright is normal and static glitch.

I used a HDMI cable on the TV and it appears normal om it wich could mean it's either a problem with the screen or the flat cable maybe? Also one of my two RAM is not working anymore and I tried testing both of them on different channels and all of them causes the same screen problem. Any helpers?

Open | Software Random PC freezes / LiveKernelEvent 141 with RX 7900 XT

Upvotes

I’ve been dealing with random freezes/crashes on my PC for quite a while and I’m trying to figure out which component is actually causing the problem.

My hardware

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT

Motherboard: MSI B550M PRO-VDH (MS-7C95)

RAM: 32 GB DDR4 (2×16 GB), currently running at 3600 MHz with XMP

SSD: 2 TB Kingston NVMe

PSU: 850 W

OS: Windows 11

What happens

The PC randomly freezes, especially while gaming, but it can also happen while using Chrome or switching between browser tabs.

The typical freeze looks like this:

The screen freezes.

Initially, I can still move the mouse.

After around 10 seconds, the mouse also stops responding.

Sometimes the audio continues for a short time.

Eventually the whole system becomes completely unresponsive and I have to force the PC to shut down.

Sometimes the PC instead reboots by itself.

With OBS running (streaming/recording), it used to freeze after roughly 25 minutes. I then tested the game without OBS running, and it still froze, so OBS is not required to reproduce the problem.

Windows errors

The main error I’m getting is:

LiveKernelEvent 141

I’ve also had other LiveKernelEvent errors such as:

141

a1000001 (AMD_WATCHDOG-Dump)

a2000002

Windows created watchdog dumps, including:

WATCHDOG-20260902-2240.dmp

I previously looked at another watchdog dump and found references to:

dxgkrnl.sys

amdxe.sys

amdkmdag.sys

amdfendr.sys

amdsafd.sys

So the crash seems to involve the Windows/AMD graphics watchdog path, but I don't know if that necessarily means the GPU itself is defective.

I have also had older WHEA-Logger Event ID 18 errors reporting:

Machine Check Exception → Cache Hierarchy Error → Processor Core

So I’m also wondering whether the CPU, memory controller, motherboard or power delivery could be involved.

Things I have already tried

I don't want to keep repeating the same tests because I've already done quite a lot of troubleshooting.

Stress tests

I have tested:

CPU stress test → ~1 hour, no errors

RAM/memory stress test → ~1 hour, no errors

Power test → ~1 hour, no errors

Linpack → ~1 hour, no errors

GPU stress test → ~1 hour, no errors

Temperatures were also reasonable. The CPU reached the mid/high 80°C range under heavy testing, which is still within the Ryzen 7 5700X3D's limits.

BIOS

I updated the motherboard BIOS to the latest version.

That did not solve the problem.

I also checked PBO and Curve Optimizer. There is no manual CPU overclock or undervolt active.

RAM

I have also tested the system with XMP disabled, but the freezes still occurred.

Currently the RAM is running at:

DDR4-3600

FCLK 1800 MHz

MCLK 1800 MHz

1.36 V

timings 18-22-22-39

AMD GPU drivers

I suspected the AMD driver might be involved.

I used DDU in Safe Mode to completely remove the AMD graphics driver and then installed an older Adrenalin version.

With Adrenalin 26.8.1, Star Wars Zero Company froze after roughly 25 minutes.

I then clean-installed Adrenalin 25.4.1.

With 25.4.1, the game lasted around 60 minutes before freezing again.

So the older driver seems to improve the situation significantly, but it does not actually fix the problem.

What would you investigate next to identify the defective component rather than just applying random workarounds?

Also, if anyone with an RX 7900 XT has experienced freezes together with LiveKernelEvent 141 / AMD watchdog errors, I'd be very interested to hear what ultimately solved it.

I have a dual-boot PC, with windows 11 and Linux mint. And recently after shutting my pc down. Windows refuses to boot up. No matter if I boot it from GRUB or the BIOS, it just boots into a black screen with no cursor or keyboard shortcuts working. I’m completely stumped. I’ve tried a hard-reset and turning off fast boot. Any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

Open | Phone Ipad Mini 1 stuck on red battery, using hair dryer method bootloops the device

Upvotes

I need help with old iPad Mini 1, i just got this out off the shelve after a long time and when I plugged it in it appears to be stuck on the red battery screen, I tried leaving it on to charge for hours but it does not work.

I found the hair dryer method where u heat up the battery so it will work, and doing it causes the iPad to get past the red battery screen and goes the apple logo but it will never fully boot up, stuck in a boot loop. I can only get to iTunes and trying to restore it causes an error (iTunes restarts the device when its preparing to flash but the iPad doesn't get to the mode that it needs to get into). I am having great difficulty entering DFU mode because of the bootloop, I can't time it right.

first of all, i know i was dumb as hell for this. but one time i accidentally downloaded something, it had the name of the file so i thought that was it. i extracted it, run it and saw a few black windows that quickly went away - that's when i knew i was something else so i deleted it right away. did all quick scan, full scan, and offline scan but nothing was found. i thought it's nothing serious until it happened: first, my discord, the hacker sent those dumbass mrbeast crypto shit to my friends, changed password and removed devices and i REALLY thought that was the end of it. the next day my instagram, the next week my facebook, and now almost a full month, my tiktok! i think i secured all those three already but im really scared about whether it might happen on another account, or it might happen again on those three. please please help what should i do? and what does this look like? thank you so muchhh

Open | Software I diagnosed my Fortnite stutter with tracing tools: the game freezes itself doing internal memory cleanup for up to 2.6 seconds, I think it's not the GPU, the disk or my hardware

Upvotes

TL;DR: Frame freezes of 0.1–2.6 seconds during matches, mid-fight, while looting, at match start and on lobby return. I instrumented the game with PresentMon and a custom lightweight ETW trace. The game thread stalls executing its own code with heavy Windows memory-management work underneath (VM decommit + soft page faults). The GPU sits idle, nothing is read from disk, and the thread is never preempted — it owns a core the entire time. This looks like Unreal's Garbage Collection or an internal pool rebuild, and I'd love input from people who know UE internals.

The problem. For the last few months, Fortnite freezes for a split second or — at worst — for 2.6 full seconds at unpredictable moments. It happens everywhere: mid-fight, while looting, when a match starts, when I return to the lobby. My hardware is: Ryzen 5 7600X, RTX 4060 8GB, 32GB DDR5, 180Hz 1080p, game on NVMe, Performance Mode (DX11/ES31) with low textures. If you're not technical: think of it as the game's "cook" stopping to do a full inventory of the pantry instead of serving the next dish.

How I measured it. I treated it like a production incident instead of guessing. PresentMon recorded the timing of every single frame (86,224 frames across a lobby session and a full match). In parallel, a custom Windows ETW trace recorded what the CPU was doing per thread, every context switch, every wait, every disk read and every driver interrupt — for about four minutes during a real match. I validated the tracing overhead first with an A/B test: average frametime went from 8.37ms to 8.41ms with tracing on, so the data describes the real game, not the observer. A first attempt with the default Windows profiles produced 37GB and visibly degraded the game, so I built a profile that's roughly 1/40th of that.

What the worst freeze (2596ms) looks like inside. The frame that stuttered reported CPUBusy 2595ms and GPUBusy 7.7ms — the GPU did almost nothing and waited for the CPU. The game thread first spent ~0.7s in rapid wait/wake cycles (hundreds of sync-object waits per second), then ran continuously for 1.6 seconds without being interrupted once. During that run, its time inside Windows' memory manager exploded: kernel functions like KiPageFault and MiDecommitAddToList (which releases physical memory back) dominate the samples, versus nearly zero in normal gameplay. Meanwhile the RHI and render threads dropped to almost nothing — everything in the game waits behind the game thread. Disk activity during the whole stall: 13 hard faults, 1.6ms of I/O total, so nothing was being streamed.

The phase I cross-referenced every stutter I felt with the trace. In the traced match the biggest hits landed on match start and looting, but fights are affected too, same symptom, same feeling, different session. What matters is that every freeze I could cross-reference maps to the same anomaly on the same thread, so I'm treating this as one mechanism, not several.

What it is NOT; each ruled out by data: the GPU and its driver (7ms of work in a 2.6s frame), disk streaming (no reads), scheduler contention (the thread was never preempted), DPC storms, RAM pressure (no hard-fault spikes, 32GB installed). EasyAntiCheat appears in the samples but accounts for about 2%.

My read: this is Unreal Engine's Garbage Collection or an internal memory pool rebuild — a batch of objects gets destroyed, memory gets decommitted, then soft page faults refill it. It started after a recent Fortnite update, which is why I don't believe it's my hardware: failing RAM or a sick CPU don't produce clean, repeatable 2-second stalls, they produce crashes.

Questions:

UE devs: does kernel KiPageFault + MiDecommitAddToList under a sustained, unsymbolized game-thread stall match the GC-purge signature? What else produces exactly this?

Anyone else on high-end hardware getting 1–3s freezes specifically on match start, looting, mid fight or anything else ?

Did anything change in Fortnite's GC or streaming behavior in recent seasons?

I have the full trace data, the custom WPR profile and the analysis scripts, happy to share details. I haven't touched a single config file, and I'm not expecting a reinstall to change code behavior — but if you have a fix that survives measurement, I'm all ears.

Open | Software Taskbar Icons showing Blank White Icons (Ghost Icon) in Windows 11

Upvotes

I cannot fix this issue! I tried all suggestions found on the Internet, but nothing worked.

What I have understood is that the possible causes are the following:

- Icon Cache Database Corruption

- Broken Windows Explorer Shell Links

I tried in many ways, like :

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
del /f /q /a "%userprofile%\\AppData\\Local\\IconCache.db"
cd /d "%userprofile%\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Explorer"
del /f /q /a iconcache\*.db
del /f /q /a thumbcache\*.db
reg delete "HKCU\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Taskband" /v Favorites /f \>nul 2\>&1
start explorer.exe

Or commands like these:

sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

But nothing changed :-(

Some taskbar icons always continue to appear as blank White Icons.

Can anyone help me solve this problem?

Many thanks

Kind regards

Fabio

Open | Hardware CS22U 2 port USB KVM Switch doesn’t change screen

Upvotes

In my work office, I use a KVM switch to change between 2 PCs with just one monitor. For some reason, when I press the physical switch, the screen doesn’t change to the second PC and still shows the main PC but the keyboard and mouse stopped working and the mouse disappeared. I assume this means the mouse and keyboard are now connected to the second PC? I can see the light on the small hub switch to other PC when I press the button but it just wouldn’t display the screen from the second PC. I tried to restart everything but nothing seems to work.

Open | Hardware Critical power telemetry failure / red LED on ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC – Faulty PCB sensing chip?

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to see if anyone else has run into this or if an ASUS rep here can help guide my RMA process. My ROG Astral RTX 5080 has developed a critical hardware fault in its power telemetry/management circuit.

Symptoms:

  • Physical Alert LED: As soon as the PC powers on, the red over-amperage warning LED on the PCB flashes continuously.
  • ASUS GPU Tweak III: With "Power Detect" enabled, the 12V-2x6 connector monitoring shows completely bogus, hard-locked readings identical across all 6 pins (stuck at 4A, 10.60A, then 14.60A, then 24.64A...) This seems completely random and all pin have the exact same value.
  • System stability : the card is performing perfectly well, good temperature, max 340W readings, excellent performance in stress test and gaming.

Troubleshooting / Cross-Testing (Eliminating External Causes): Tested across two totally separate PC builds (different PSU/MOBO/CPU AND CASE) with the exact same behavior every time:

  • Tested with 2 high-end PSUs: Corsair RM850x and Thermaltake Toughpower 1650W.
  • Tested with 4 different 12V-2x6 power cables/adapters (all fully seated with a clear click).

It seems clear that the power sensing/monitoring chip on the PCB is defective. Without functioning current monitoring, this feels like a potential safety risk on top of making the PC unusable.

Has anyone seen this specific error code/pattern before?
GPU was purchased on amazon and still under european warranty so I was considering a potential swap with a new unit instead of potential full RMA process...

Thanks!

Open | Windows Mouse pointer freezes but mouse still works?

Upvotes

So here and there, my mouse pointer will freeze for about a second and a half, and during that time, if I still move my mouse, any movements I make will still be applied after it unfreezes, so clearly the mouse itself is still working.
Iirc, it almost always happens while playing games, but happens in every game. Could it be a ram issue? I think either my ram or ssd has a low speed. Not sure if that impacts anything.
