I recently been looking for a good mma, kickboxing, or muay thai gym in Taipei and i noticed they are all pretty expensive and the gym equipment varies between gyms. Just wanted some recommendations for gyms here and what the prices are compared to other gyms.

Hello! I am moving to Taiwan in 2 weeks and have a few rookie questions I'm hoping someone familiar with the process can help me with!

1. Order of operations for admin tasks

What's the sensible order for: collecting the Gold Card, getting a local SIM, signing a lease, and opening a bank account? I'm getting stuck on the chicken-and-egg parts: does picking up the Gold Card require a local address? Does SIM reg need a local bank account for charges? Can I open a bank account without a Taiwan number or address yet? Do landlords accept rent in cash?

2. Leasing via agent vs. directly from landlord

Are there downsides to going through an agent vs. leasing directly from the landlord, and anything to watch out for either way? E.g. direct leasing means dealing with the landlord directly for repairs and whatnots; does an agent smooth that out? Do agents stay involved after the lease is signed, or is their job done once the deal closes? And do the contracts themselves differ between agent and direct leases?

3. Rent negotiation and furnishing requests

Is it culturally normal to negotiate on rent? And can I reasonably ask the landlord to add/install furnishing or appliances?

4. eSIM availability

Do local telcos offer eSIM for long-term/monthly plans, or is eSIM mostly just a tourist SIM thing? Trying to figure out if I need to plan for a physical SIM instead.

My wife is picking up her Gold Card this week, and I need a spousal visa. The Gold Card website is a bit vague and unclear regarding what I actually need to present for a spousal visa. For example, one web page states I need two passport photos, and another web page states I need only one. The part the confuses me the most is the authentication of our marriage certificate. Does it need to be translated into Mandarin? If so, where do I go to get this done? If anyone has gone through this process, or is familiar with it, and can provide some guidance and insight, it would be deeply appreciated. TIA!

I’ll be in Taipei from early October until December and I’m really excited to explore Taiwan’s design and creative scene.

I’m planning to visit the Taiwan Design Expo in Taoyuan sometime between October 6-10 and would love to find some people who are also going - whether you’re a design student, designer, architect, creative, founder, or simply interested in design and want to check it out together!

I’m a designer and founder working in the design industry, with my own design brand and collaborations with international creatives and partners. I work particularly around collectible design, furniture, materials and creative entrepreneurship.

This will actually be my first time attending a design fair in Asia, so I’m really curious to see how the Taiwanese design scene compares to Europe and to meet people working in the local creative industry.

But I’m also interested in more than just the Expo - I’d love to discover design, art, architecture, fashion and creative events happening around Taipei while I’m there, and meet people who are part of or interested in these communities.

So… who’s going? Who’s already in Taipei? 👀

Guys, I’ll do solo travel to Taipei and I wonder when is the best time to visit and activities to do? Is there any hiking tour as well there?

I'm studying abroad in Taipei soon and I currently am in a K-Pop dance club but will miss it while I'm abroad. I'd love to take k-pop dance classes but am not sure of what studios in Taipei have English lessons. I'm mid-intermediate in Chinese so I feel as if I'd be more comfortable learning in English but would also probably be ok in Chinese? Also if there's some that are fairly budget friendly that'd be awesome but I know dance lessons aren't usually cheap so that isn't my main concern.

I’m coming back after 9 years away and could not be more stoked! I lived in Taipei for 2 years and loved it so much, and now a wedding is bringing me and my girlfriend back for 8 days at the end of October. I’m sure a lot has changed since 2017, so looking for everyone’s advice on a few different topics:

Airbnb vs. Hotel:
I’ve seen a lot of talk about illegal or catfish Airbnbs and what to look for in listings. If the property is rented by a Superhost, does that add legitimacy to the listing? I’ve found a few good options, but have been more hesitant to book after reading some other posts on this sub.

Areas to stay:
Looking to stay somewhere with shops/cafes around and close to an MRT. I’ve seen a few people recommend Zhongshan so we’re looking there. I always loved the Zhongxiao Dunhua area. I think we’ll avoid the noise and crowds of the Ximen area. Are there other places we should consider?

Things to do:
It’s my girlfriends first time in Asia let alone Taipei so I want to hit all the major tourist spots, and also go places I used to go to when I lived here, but what are some other things that are new from when I left that I shouldn’t miss? Is baseball still in season? Planning some excursions up to hot springs in Yangmingshan and seeing Jiufen, but hoping to have lots of options while we’re in the city.
