DO NOT POST CAR/HOME AUDIO QUESTIONS IN THIS SUB!

This is a sub for the technical side of "Soundsystem Culture" - big, loud speaker boxes, often hand-built, in the dub-reggae tradition. Stuff that looks like this. Or this.

If you're looking for advice on home audio/theater systems, please try asking at /r/BudgetAudiophile, /r/Audiophile or /r/HomeTheater. Car Audio questions go to /r/CarAV.

Discussion about music should go here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SoundSystem/comments/ge9sov/official_rsoundsystem_music_thread/

Thank you!

Hi all,

We recently aquired some older Harmonic Design SPA Systems.

In total 8 SPA Tops (2" and 8" coax, 15" bi-amped) and 8 SPA Bass (15"), 4 Amp Racks.

The Sound is amazing but to be honest the subs are lacking a bit.

My hope is that a more modern Rack will help us get a bit more low end and also to safe a lot of weight and space.

2nd picture is one of the systems amp racks.

Mig 1000 for the mid-high of the tops and Mig 1500 for the lows of top and base, all controlled by an analog hd system 2000 Controller

We frequently run into the limit on the mig 1500 since it only produces 750w @ 4Ohm and the two 15" could take each 500w RMS

Any recommendations on DSPs and Amps for a small budget?

DSP wise I'm looking into the sinbosen LA448.

1HE Amps or 2HE?

In the future we might aquire some more subs if we can't achieve our goal to get more low end punch.

All advice appreciated.

2 "MT130" scaled down with .. ? (no sim or anything done, belong to a friend) (TA2400 + TA1400)

2 MKH230 with Oberton 12b450 (TA 4000)

8 Bidet 112 with Thomann 12 280/8-A (TSA 4-700)

6 CBH38 with RCF LF15x401 (2 proline 3000)

Sounded pretty decent considering the top is certainly the worstest one i've seen.

Powering JMOD + SKRAM

Hello everybody!

I’m in the process of building two JMOD 2.0s and two SKRAM subs. My question is what power amps/dsp do you recommend for my rack and what size inverter generator am I going to need to power all of it for mobile setup?

I will be using the recommended B&C 12NDL88s and DCX464 for the JMODs and then the recommended B&C 21DS115s for the SKRAMs.

Any and all advice would be helpful!

Thank you 🙏

CVR DSP-3004

Hi everyone, I am starting to build a new system, and I choose the DSP-3004 from CVR as the main amp.
Is this good enough for 4x18” 8 ohm subs, and 4x10 inch 4 ohm tops?

Can we run it from 240V 16A breakers, or we need 32A?

Does anyone have some screenshots of the DSP settings available?

Also, is this number legit for CVR: +86 159 1951 8864

Thanks for your help.

Paint/finishing question on a TH1821 build

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,
I'm currently building a TH1821 based on the plan (see attached build photo + the plan sheet referencing piece #13, which is the interior corner piece that hides the handles), and I've got two questions for anyone who's already been through this:
Painting piece #13 (the interior corners that hide the handles): do you paint it before or after assembly? Trying to figure out what's simplest/cleanest in the end, since it's a bit awkward to reach once everything's glued/screwed together.
Joints on the angles: is this actually necessary for sealing/acoustic performance, or is it mainly about aesthetics/finish?

A warning about Sinbosen: no support. Forget warranty or return.

So I also decided to buy Sinbosen k4-1000 but even if the amplifier is good, after paying and (quick) delivery there has been zero response on several quieries.

For instance: I was so impressed by Sono DS413 I decided to keep it. But I already paid 444 euros on a k4-1000. After delivery last week Ive sent an email, pm facebook snd contacted chrystal how to proceed and return the amplifier.

Zero reaction for over a week now.

I then opened it up and decided if i csnt return, i might aswell fidfle and replace the jet engine noise (12.000 rpm) fans for decent quiet ones. But the sinbosen fan rail is two stage: starts up with 13v then drops to 5.7V. The teplavement fans Nictua dont make enough cooling so i asked sinbosen on all their accounts snd whatsapp, for helo. Again: full silence.

In this I like to warn future buyers to consider this experience that doesn’t seem to be an incident. Others have reported similar experiences.

In contrast the contact with cvr was much more direct. Sono of Alibaba: ditto. Buying at alibaba also gives some protection and return policies.

I did fix the cooling problems with external 12v feed from a simple power adapter.

EDIT: CVR does not have a return policy at all.

Dual driver subs how do you prefer to wire them, series, parallel or separate?

I am in the process of building out some skhorns and was curious when you guys wire in your subs if you prefer to run them as individual channels, in series wiring or parallel wiring? I understand what needs to happen with amps as I do this but curious what sounds the best and provides the best performance.

thoughts on the multiplication of sound systems

Hi everyone ! I've been thinking lately about the increasing number of sound systems worldwide, and the "mainstreamization" of the culture. I'm talking about brands sponsoring sound systems, expensive events, and overall a growing interest about sound systems. Do you think it's a bad thing for the culture ? Do you personnally feel this way ? Have you noticed a change ? Do you feel like it's bringing a commercial and capitalist mindset to an originally anticapitalist culture ? I'm really interested in hearing other people's thoughts about this. Thanks :)

Full custom sound for sale

I hope this is allowed.

I'm selling my full custom soundsystem:

- Oryx sub (x8)

- Large format tops (x2)

- Small format tops (x3)

- 24u shockmount 5-Star amp rack

- Crest CA18 (x4)

- Crest CA6

- All NL2/NL4 to run with cable trunk and spares

- 130m(ish) of vandamme nl4

- 63a distro

- Titanex 63a 3ph cable 20m

- Spare Beyma 15Qlex1600fe

EXTRA INFO:

Oryx Subs - 15" folded horn, custom design loaded with Beyma 15Qlex1600fe. Ive always ran them from 28hz-90hz and never had anything but compliments on how heavy they sound. This is a perfect example of right driver in the right box, these regularly get mistaken for dual 18's and dual 21's.

Large Format Tops - A rework of the EAW KF750 but the horn has been moved above the mouth of the box to allow for a custom phase plug. One of them has replacement kick drivers as the original EAW drivers arent available anymore. These tops sound super clean but are VERY loud so caution should be used. Tri amped.

Small tops - I used these for smaller events for dj monitors, bi-amped.

Amps and dsp were all serviced last year and only used a couple of times since, none run super hard as you just don't need to.

Boxes are in used but good condition, still built super solid. All just need a lick of paint except the tops which may need a little bit of a fill in some places, but functionally, they still work perfectly.

This is a serious system that has proven itself at Notting Hill Carnival multiple times, linked up with Sinai where it shocked the crew and even run a second room at an RC1 event where we were being told we were keeping up with them (IYKYK)!

I'm looking for £13,000 but happy to negotiate.

Location: South UK

Renting a Sound System London Area

I am helping to produce a fashion show in the London area on a limited budget, and we are looking for a sound system to rent for that time.

We have a DJ, and we would need the equipment from 11-0 on Monday September 21.

Our budget is £90, reply or dm and we could communicate further over email.

We appreciate any inquiries and will get back to you promptly.

EDIT: We are aware that our client’s £90 is cheap, which is why we are asking on Reddit and not going to a large company for the equipment.

Cosmic Slop Soundsystem stack

Post image
56 Upvotes

Source: picture from another Reddit post...

Anyway, I was wondering what different cabinets the Cosmic Slop Soundsystem uses here and at what frequencies?

The use of a horn, tweeter (and sub?) is very clear. The middle cabinet pretty much resembles an Altec 816
However, as an Altec 816 is normally used as full range cabinet, could this for this stack also the case? Whereby the subwoofer, horn and tweeters take care of the upper and lower ends of the spectrum and the middle cabinet is then used as partial fullrange combining midbass and mids (Or more like the Altec A7 & thus no dedicated sub)?

my rig progress + beginner advice pls

Thumbnail

ive been puttin together this little rig for the past year ish out of a lot of facebook marketplace and assorted hand-me-down relics from my old man whos a retired sound engineer.. I myself know next to nothing about what im doing and dont have much experience/understanding of acoustical or electrical engineering.

ive got 2x 15" mini scoops on the bottom, 2x 18" mini scoops with the gold grills, 2x yamaha s215v and ive got 2x 15" and horn cabs (the empty cab in the middle; other one isnt in on top bc its too tall to stack them indoors.). ive got 3 qsc audio amps at my disposal: an rmx 1450 and two rmx 2450s, all currently with broken potentiometers... Got a crossover but not currently using it. Ive got a behringer ultragraph pro and a tube composer and it all goes into an A&H Xone 4D mixer i run into my cdjs. All that ive learnt about soundsystems is through installing drivers and repairing/replacing all the broken things on and inside the devices and cabinets and piecing them together. This is still a big WIP and a lot of restoration to make it pretty before i take this out for any proper events. Im quite into a multitude of genres from dub to jungletek and breakcore, but might even think of doing good ol chill vinyl listening parties. I think this will make a pretty decent multigenre rig.

My old man knows more and i usually bring him with me to make sure im doing things right. but ive bought a bunch of this rig myself (the yams and the 18s) and he's passed down other stuff for me to use. Whenever i have conversations with actual soundsystem afficionados and they ask me questions about what I've got i get confused and shrug. Idk how to tune these speakers. I just about know what rms and peak my drivers are and how ive wired it up, not much more. lve gotten to make friends with the more knowledgable people who run the local reggae soundsystems and the freeparty crews, whereas i kinda inherited this and feel alot more inexperienced, but they had to start from the ground up. Makes me look like a bit of a poser. Does anyone else ever feel this way or did they start off their journey like this?? Curious to hear anyone elses experience or advice / resources for learning more . And anyones opinion on my rig . Thank u guys 😋

Happy 60 years of carnival to all those past and present for celebrating, sharing and introducing so many to such a beautiful culture.

Massive thanks and respect to channel one and all those involved. Without doubt one of, if not the most influential soundsystem for me personally. Mikey is a living legend and I’ve never been to a bad dance.

Big up Greensleeves as well, truly fundamental in the continuation of bringing Jamaican music to the masses in the U.K. from 1977 onwards.

cheap crossover that can do a ~80hz - ~250hz kick bin band?

I'm on a mission to build a decent sounding system within extreme budget and design constraints. Part of those parameters is avoiding "expensive" DSP (if possible) and just running a frequency splitter and an EQ.

It's going well so far, with the exception of finding a cheap crossover that will properly carve out a kick bin frequency range of ~80hz - ~250hz. The Behringer X-Pro series (and the no-name knockoffs) all have a mid/high cutoff range starting at over 400hz. The kick bin design I'm playing with uses a folded horn rear path so the frequency response is comb shaped chaos above the first two octaves (~300hz and above).

I will run the system like that if I have to and compensate with EQ, but is there not a cheap 3-way stereo frequency splitter that can do ranges like [30hz - 80hz] [80hz - 250hz] [250hz - 20khz] ?

Picture of the backloaded horn kick bin design I've been playing with, for wooden geometry enthusiasts.
