It's kind of hilarious how they know they can easily dupe someone into being a white knight, laying down for them based solely on gender. I've seen it in person. Guys will instantly go caveman to defend a woman's honor. They don't know the woman and they don't even understand the situation to even make the judgment to defend her.

I know that knowing to say that in the moment is probably not as easy as you'd think. But it would stop them dead in their tracks and anyone listening in is going to know.

When a guy and girl are in a physical altercation, the guy is going to be the focus of everyone's attention when breaking it up. Dealing with the context comes after this, but the thief will have fled by then.

I swear, how are people not getting this? Let me play it out since people seem to lack reading comprehension.

Step 1. Pickpocket sees purse they want to take.

Step 2. They grab at the purse and start yelling, "hey, give me back my purse!" Even though it's not theirs

Step 3. People minding their business don't realize what's going on and only see someone trying to "get back their purse." So they either, A. Don't interfere cause that's not their problem, or B. Do interfere and believe the person causing the commotion thinking they are helping someone get their purse back, when in actuality they are inadvertently assisting the pickpocket.

Step 4. They manage to get the purse out of its rightful owners hands for even a split second, and the lying thief takes off pretending they just avoided a robbery while whoever helped confronts the supposed suspect, even though they're the victim.

So here’s the scenario. This woman starts screaming; “give me my bag back!” And pulling on your bag. Most people haven’t been paying attention so they don’t know what to think. They just know that some woman is hysterically begging for her bag as if someone stole it. Then her accomplice comes in and “saves the day” by “getting her bag back” hopefully while some dumb white knights hold you down. Then they run off with your bag in the commotion. This woman dealt with it like you should. Always create a bigger commotion.

God like.. 20 years ago I was working retail, selling video games, and this guy comes in. I knew who he was, local shithead/criminal, wanted to trade a bunch of games in for cash which gets you 20% less than trading for credit.

When I told him the price was lower for cash? Instantly the money was "for my grandmothers meds" and she "really needed them". He was only half lying of course, they were for "meds".

They have no shame whatsoever and will play you as much as you let them.

His wife came out of the store in time to clarify the situation and prevent kidnap, but seriously, apparently the dude got his ribs broken by a bystander.

Yeah I saw a video of a big black guy fighting several dudes while the little old lady was helped to steal his bag but he wouldn't give up on it. Eventually he said what was in the bag and the white knights looked and found it to be true while Babushka just shuffled off and he walked off with a face covered in blood from all the people that had attacked him to "defend" her.

That's interesting that I'm learning this. This is probably before covid but some old spanish-speaking woman grabed my phone and started saying, "¡mía! "¡mía!" "es mine, es mine!" at a park when I was walking my dog. I was sitting on a bench and listening to an audiobook and she just tried to yank the phone out of my hand I held on to it. When I put it back in my pocket she raised her cane at me like she was going to hit me. It happened in front of a huge group of people. Couples families homeless people typical guys you see at the park. Nobody really cared. I wonder now if that's what it was was some type of theft. I thought she just had Alzheimer's or something. She made quite a scene. I thought she was just really crazy at the time.

It doesn't just work this way. They make a massive scene, and of course the one making the scene must be the victim so people rush to help them.

It happens with backpacks, it happens with purses, its fucking happened with CHILDREN. I've seen at least 3 videos of men out with their children and this woman rushes up screaming about how he's kidnapping her babies, and the father gets their asses beat and then some while the woman attempts to kidnap the infants.

This happened at Tomorrowland. A woman stole a guy's phone, he then lunged at her trying to get his phone back. She screamed help and everyone took her side. Then while everyone was yelling at the guy, she quickly ran away. His friend group caught up with him a few minutes later confirming that he did indeed have his phone stolen.

It works as long as you do it correctly. It works even better when the thief is a woman and the victim a man.

I got mugged in New Orleans and the bouncers helped him get away from me. I had his balls and penis firmly between my fingernails. I mean my nails were touching through his skin. As soon as the bouncers pried me off of him, he was gone with my wallet and jewelry. The police had to come before they would believe me. I hope he will always remember how much that hurt. When I walked into the New Orleans police station the officers came out of the back offices to hear the story.

There’s a few videos I’ve seen where bystanders literally rip a woman’s bag from her hands and hand it to someone else who’s claiming it’s their bag. All while the other woman is screaming that it’s her bag.

I’ve seen also a dude have the same thing happen with shopping bags and they be taken and given to a woman.

So the hope is that bystanders will intervene. It especially works if tourists or immigrants. Those who don’t really speak the language well or at all.

It sounds stupid and obvious, but really that’s what you have to say. When people get pulled off their phones or distraction and watch the ruckus, they have no idea what’s going on. They think it’s friends arguing, or that you are indeed the thief, etc... you lose precious time then you get punched and the thief is away before anyone could react.

Give them a clear view of the situation to avoid misunderstandings. Someone may even intervene against you. So just yell the obvious, I don’t know you and this is my bag.

Actually found a link to the video. The police did get his ID out of the bag. But not before other bystanders assaulted the black man. He got punched in the face and screamed at because he’s a black man in America. Shit’s unjust.

Used to work security. Had a lady do this where I worked. But instead of a bag it was a guy's daughter. By the time we got there, 6 guys were helping to try and kidnap his kid without knowing it

It's not to distract, it's trying to leverage the good nature of bystanders into taking the real victim's purse and giving it to this person, bystanders (or fake bystander co-conspirator man) hands the purse to the con-woman, con-woman and co-conspirator flees.

Typically there is another person there who will act as a neutral party, but they are not neutral - they are in if the scam. So when this person says that you stole their bag, and you disagree and say it it is your bag, the neutral party will come in and say "fine that's okay I'll take the bag and we'll get to the bottom of it." From there there's lots of options as to what could happen. Perhaps they drop a cell phone in the bag and then the pretend victim says "for sure my bag because if you call this number it will ring" and sure enough it rings. Or the neutral party just runs off with the bag now that hes got it. Or fake police come.

I think this lady screwed it up.

In past situations I've seen, the scam usually leverages gender biases to be effective:

  1. The scammer is a woman, preferably somewhat sympathetic looking
  2. The target should be a man, preferably someone with an appearance that society doesn't extend a lot of empathy to
  3. There needs to be other people around, preferably a mixed group.
  4. The goal is to create a scene with a sense of urgency that gets others involved to 'defend' the scammer, and make the victim feel in danger/at risk of violence from the group.

To succeed it often plays off multiple biases:

  1. Men's tendency to want to jump to the defense of women, often without knowing the context or details.
  2. Women's tendency to bias towards believing other women, and culture of siding with one another. Often without knowing the facts or context.
  3. Both genders unconscious bias that makes it harder to see women, especially white women as equally capable of crime, immorality, or wrongdoing.

The woman in the OP chose another woman as the target, which breaks some of the social dynamics that the scam is leveraging.

There was a guy who died because a homeless lady said he stole her vehicle and white knights beat him to death. She was homeless and it was his vehicle he was trying to defend being stolen...

I carry a firearm because of stories like this.

Timing and opportunity.

If you get bystanders on your side, then now you have to "prove" its your bag once

"Ok, fine, here's my wallet with my ID"

Then notice how the door opened right away? Reach in, grab wallet, run out while everyone tries to figure out what happened. 4 seconds later the door closes and thief is gone.

Years ago a guy just grabbed my phone out of my hand and ran as the doors were closing. I reacted fast enough to shove my foot on the door to keep it open and chased after him. Fortunately someone happened to call the cops when they saw him grab it and the saw me run after him. They intercepted both of us 12 blocks down the road and confirmed it was my phone and arrested him.

Yeah, I'm confused by this. Easiest way to prove it is to say check my ID inside. And if no ID, simply ask the culprit to identify what's in the bag without opening it, and then simply list out more things than they can.
