The fascinating life and travels of Dhanna Singh Chahal ‘Patialvi’, a man who possessed only a bicycle and camera yet made his name immemorial due to his efforts to document puratan asthans.

Dhanna Singh had humble origins, being born as a native of Sangrur district with the name Lal Singh. He and his brother grew up in an orphanage after his father’s death. Due to a connection, he was able to secure employment as a driver for Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. After a trip to Nanded Sahib, he underwent the Pahul and took on the Khalsa name Dhanna Singh. His life takes on a fascinating shift after this. From the 1920s-30s, Dhanna Singh, with his Elswick Company, No. 56113 H.C. model bicycle, travelled 25,000 miles (+40,000 km), visiting over 1,600 Sikh shrines in the process, snapping countless photos of what he saw but also documenting what he experienced in a detailed diary & on the back of every photo he took. What innovative foresight he had! Unfortunately, Dhanna’s life came to a tragic end: while in the North-West Frontier Province (present-day KPK, Pakistan), a gun accidentally discharged and killed him on 2 March 1935, he was only in his 30s or 40s.

Thankfully, he had passed on his collection of photos to a trusted confidant before his final trip. These photos were forgotten until Chetan Singh rediscovered them and Panjab Digital Library underwent the process to digitize them. Many of the sites he had photographed no longer exist in their original state, meaning his photos give us a glimpse of what once was but no longer is… leaving a somber impression on the viewer, mournful of the cultural loss in the past century. What will our descendants have to look back on and claim as civilizational heritage if we keep going at this rate?

I was researching the paintings that were of guru gobind singh ji, and most of them have guru wear lavish earings and jewelry but none of them were proven to be from gurus time most were from 1800s but still today our people pass those as true portaits.

While researching, I came across this one. This one is from 1701 CE when guru ji visited mandi on the request of Raja sidh Sen, the only ruler who had respect for guru gobind singh ji. Guru Ji stayed there for months, and this painting was painted.

It was restored, checked, and verified by Dr. Daljeet Kaur and Dr. M.S. Randhawa is kept at the National Museum of Delhi and only taken out periodically due to its delicate nature.

IMO, this literally depicts guru ji as a saint-soldier. The description matches that of early rehatnama and mughal eye witnesses. But still, this is just an artistic depiction of our sache patshah just like all the other portraits out there, not a true depiction. The artist drew guru in the essence of how pahari people looked and the turban worn by them so we can't say this is how the guru looked before back then art wasn't to make the person look realistic but how an artist drew the person.

I know this painting looks different and odd from all the others we've seen but the people who authenticated it saw that it was written guru gobind singh ji in takri script of the time and it matches the language of that century and ink, the strokes and everything it matches pahari style of the era

Guru Nanak Dev Ji travelled to different places and met people from different backgrounds. He did not ask them to first speak Punjabi, dress like him, or become like him before sharing his teachings. If the message is for everyone, should Sikhi not be understood in every language?

According to Gurbani, you can attain liberation where Kabeer says “Kabeer, when you are in love with the One Lord, duality and alienation depart. You may have long hair, or you may shave your head bald.” Bhagat Kabir is talking about Jains who cut their hair and Hindus that kept their hair, if there love and devotion is pure to the creator.

Damdami Taksal says “"The treacherous has altered the perfect human body, Making it lose its natural beauty.He/She will not aet acceptance in the court of God” Does this mean Sehadjhari Sikhs can’t attain liberation if they don’t keep their kesh?

Hey everyone, before you all jump to a conclusion, please hear me out.

I am a 19-year-old Sikh boy, and my whole family is, well, Sikh! I am going through something right now, and it has traumatized me.

We all know that it’s considered a sin to cut our hair as a Sikh, and to be honest, I respect that. I love the teachings of our Gurus!

So, let’s come to the main point-

1. Hair Issue

I absolutely love my long hair, but when I tie it in a Juda, my head aches. I also have Androgenetic Alopecia (I will lose hair, and this is genetic).

Because of this, I keep my hair at the back and tie it with a rubber band. But my family thinks that I am drifting away from Sikhism, and they blackmail me emotionally (they love me a lot, and I know that).

For example, my mom says, “You are making me and your late grandfather ashamed. You are constantly aching my soul. If I die, it would be on you because you are giving me constant pain.”

Hearing things like this constantly has affected me a lot.

2. Beard Issue

Dear Sikh MEN/WOMEN, before you jump straight on me, please hear me out.

I have this mental thing where the blackness of the hair makes me go insane. Wherever I see hair—on my face, legs, hands—it makes me go crazy.

I really want to be free from this mental condition, but I myself am stuck in it.

And NO, I do not do this for girls. I have very close female friends, and I do not believe that hair can be the reason for someone to not love me. I do not do this for looks.

I respect Sikhism. I love the teachings of our Gurus. This isn't about me wanting to drift away from Sikhism. I am struggling with something mentally that I myself don't fully know how to deal with.

I just want to hear your point of view.

If you were someone going through this mental issue yourself, while constantly having to hear your parents emotionally blackmailing you into following something which you genuinely do want to follow but a literal mental condition is becoming the reason you can’t, what would you do?

Please try to understand where I’m coming from before judging me.

I’m a 21F amritdhari bibi . I’ve always been very hairy but over the past year I’ve started getting noticeable facial hair including a bit of a beard and much thicker eyebrows. After that I started to remove the hair from my face nowhere else on my body.

I work around a lot of white people and honestly, I feel really self-conscious when my facial hair or brows become very noticeable. I never used to have this issue but it has gotten much more noticeable this past year.

The thing is, I’m really trying my best with my Sikhi. I do my Nitnem, Amritvela and try to stay connected to Maharaj in every way I can. I’m also currently applying to med school and this fear has been eating at me and what if Maharaj is upset with me because I remove my facial hair? What if this somehow affects my chances of getting into med school?

I know it might sound irrational but I genuinely feel scared that I’m doing something wrong and that Maharaj might not bless me because of it.

I’d really appreciate hearing from other Sikh women, especially those who have struggled with facial hair and Sikhi. How do you look at this?

Events in Brief.

1. August 31, 1991: Militant Sikh Bhai Gurjant Singh Rajasthani martyred this day. Bhai Sahib, a militant leader, died in a brief encounter with the police in Mohali. He was staying in a rented house owned by Inderjit Kaur, a former secretary of Bimal Kaur Khalsa. A local police party was conducting routine checks to identify participants in the Anandpur Sahib conclave. Bhai Sahib retaliated in error, and with additional police force, he engaged in a firefight. Injured & unwilling to surrender, took a cyanide pill.

2. August 31, 1995: Remembering Shahid Bhai Dilawar Singh, suicide bomber who killed Congress CM Beant Singh. CM Beant Singh, while leaving his high-security office in Chandigarh, was blown up. Several Sikh educated youth turned militants planned this move, and one of them, Bhai Dilawar, accepted to be blown up. Under Beant Singh’s leadership, many innocent youth, their families, and other young men were framed, targeted, and eliminated. On August 31, 2012, Bhai Dilawar Singh was declared a Quomi Shahid by Akal Takhat and his portrait was displayed.

3. September 1, 1604:(Aug24/SGPC) Parkash Dihara. First Parkash of Sri Aad Granth/Pothi Sahib is installed at Harimandar Sahib Amritsar. Baba Budda Ji is the first Mukh Granthi (Head priest). The fifth Guru Arjan Dev ji (1564-1606) along with Bhai Gurdas, compiled, completed and installed the holy scripture in the presence of a large congregation. Later in 1708, The Adi Granth finally became Guru Granth Sahib, the Eternal Guru of Sikhs, declared by Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Nanded, Maharashtra before his passing away, (Read more about Guru Granth Sahib & its composition)

4. September 1, 2004: France makes a law banning Turban & Hijab. Large demonstration by European Sikhs in France. France felt the need to curb immigration and to protect its culture, it enforced a law made on 4th march 2004 that bans religious symbols in schools and workplaces. Despite a large demonstration in France, lack of support by PM Manmohan Singh in India, it did not make any headway.

5. September 2. 1991: Bibi Bimal Kaur Khalsa MP, wife of Shahid Beant Singh dies in mysterious circumstances. Shahid Inspector Beant Singh, one of Indira Gandhi’s assassins, was shot dead after killing her on October 31, 1984. His wife, Bimal Kaur Khalsa, survived and was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha in 1989. She actively participated in Punjab’s civil rights movement. She died mysteriously, allegedly electrocuted while using a washing machine. Despite a post-mortem request, the police ignored the cause of her death, raising doubts.

6. September 3, 1708: Banda Singh Bahadur adopts Sikh faith, follows Guru’s order to march towards Punjab. Guru Gobind Singh ji baptized Madho Das Bairagi at Nanded (Maharashtra State) and named him Gurbakhash Singh. A day later, he ordered him to march to Punjab to punish the Mughal Nawab Wazir Khan of Sirhind for committing atrocities on Guru’s two young Sahibzadas (princes), who were nine and seven years old, and had been bricked alive. 7. September 3, 1668: Bhai Dharam Singh, Second of Tenth Guru’s Panj Pyara, is Born at Hastinapur near Delhi. Bhai Dharam Singh, one of the five initiated into the Khalsa Order, answered Guru Gobind Singhji’s call on Baisakhi in 1699. Son of Jat Chaudhary Sant Ram and Mai Sabho of Hastinapur(Delhi) he reunited with the Guru after the Battle of Chamkaur and accompanied him to Nanded. He also carried Guru’s Zafarnama to Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb along with Bhai Daya Singh.

8. September 4, 1965: Subedar Ajit Singh gets gallantry Award Mahavir Chakra (posthumously) at Battle of Burkee, in Indo-Pak War 1965.. Mahavir Chhaker was awarded to the Subedar for 4 Sikh LI’s march onto east bank of Ichhogil Canal facing Lahore. The battalion was assigned the task of capturing the Burki village in Pakistan. Subedar’s gallant act destroyed the enemy position. Subedar Ajit Singh later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred and awarded the nation’s Second highest gallantry award.

9. September 4,1991: Shahidi /Martyrdom of Bhai Balwinder Singh Jattana-a key figure in closing SYL Canal construction. Sikh militant Jatana Singh rose against the exploitation of Punjab River waters. On July 23, 1990, he and his companions attacked the SYL Canal headquarters in Mohali, killing engineers and halting the project. In retaliation, fake Nihang Ajit Poohla police Cat killed Jatana’s family. To honor him, the SGPC installed his portrait at the Central Sikh Museum in the Golden Temple complex.

10. September 6,1901: Giani Ditt Singh, a Sikh scholar and leader of the Gurdwara reform movement, passed away, in Lahore. Born on April 21, 1850, in Kalanaur, Punjab, Ditt Singh studied Gurmukhi, Urdu, Persian, and Vedanta at age 8. He became a prominent Singh Sabha reformer, writing frequently for ‘Khalsa Akhbar’ and authoring over 70 books on Sikhism, including ‘Dayanand Naal Mera Samvaad.’

11. September 6 1965: Indo-Pak Full scale War breaks out. Sikhs capture Pakistan territory, intense fighting at Khem-Karan Border. India emerged victorious in the war within 22 days, leading to a ceasefire and a treaty. Pakistan’s Operation Gibraltar provoked insurgency in Indian-administered Kashmir, sparking the conflict. Key battles included the Battle of Asal Uttar, and intense aerial combat ensued. Despite claims of victory, the war ended in a stalemate with a UN-mandated ceasefire on September 23. 12. September 6,1992: Sikh Human Rights Activist Shahid Jaswant Singh Khalra goes missing. He meticulously compiled a list of 25,000 missing youths from Punjab’s Amritsar district, asserting illegally cremated and declared missing by the Punjab police. Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra (1952–1995) exposed the abuses in Punjab during the 1980s and 1990s, bringing international attention to the horrific atrocities and civil rights violations. On September 6, 1995, the Punjab police abducted him, tortured him, and disappeared him.

I've seen it used a few times to mean white people (who aren't Sikhi?), so I've used it once or twice for myself when asking about Sikhi instead of saying I'm an agnostic white Englishman. EDIT: Thanks for the answers, Sangatji.

You can in a sense say that until you are in veil, you can say that I do and when get out of it, say that I am under hukam. This answer is not accepted unless you try to justify it.

Outside of these, Sikhism is the most good religion.

I’ve spent years studying Gurbani, history, and practice. I keep hitting the same wall: no one articulates what Sikhi actually does to a person who practices it honestly. Everyone talks about Sikhi—history, theology, politics—but no one seems willing to say what the core engine is.

Here’s the framework I arrived at, stripped of the usual defenses. It relies on identifying the obvious traps we fall into and the reframing that clears them.

Pitfall 1: Treating Sikhi as a System of Beliefs

The Trap: We assume the goal is intellectual assent. "I believe Waheguru is in everyone." I recite the lines, I agree with the philosophy. But when I see a dirty person, I still feel disgust. The intellect accepts the truth, but the body doesn't. The Reframe: Sikhi is a discipline of perception, not a religion of belief. Intellectual assent doesn’t move the nervous system. You can’t think your way into compassion; you have to train the body until the reaction changes. The goal isn’t a correct thought; it’s a correct reaction that no longer requires a thought.

Pitfall 2: Misreading Personal Language as Ontology

The Trap: We argue over whether Waheguru is truly a Father, a Mother, a Friend, or purely Formless (Nirgun). We treat these descriptions as competing facts about God’s nature. The Reframe: Language is a transfer mechanism, not a description. Gurbani uses "Father" not because Waheguru has a gender, but because every human already knows the feeling of love toward a parent. It borrows an existing, grooved emotional template and redirects it toward the Formless. It uses the word "Ram" not to endorse Hinduism, but to borrow the intensity of devotion people already had for that archetype. The personal language is the handle, not the object.

Pitfall 3: Reducing Rituals to Symbols or Rules

The Trap: We debate whether Langar is just charity, whether the Five K’s are identity badges, or whether Kirtan is just music. We treat them as symbols of an idea or rules to obey. The Reframe: Rituals are technologies of perception.Langar isn’t symbolic equality; it’s embodied training that forces you to serve strangers you’d normally avoid. Scrubbing floors isn’t a symbol of humility; it’s a physical action that overrides hierarchical instinct until the feeling catches up. Mantra literally means "mind-tool," and Naam is one of the principal instruments—a sustained practice to tune attention until the divine is felt, not just understood. The ritual works whether you call it a symbol or not, but it fails if you treat it as mere decoration.

Pitfall 4: Confusing Hierarchy with Equality

The Trap: We see the Five K’s as markers of status ("Initiated" vs. "Uninitiated") or assume the discipline creates inequality between the Guru and the follower. The Reframe: Hierarchy is dissolved in the treatment of others and established only in the treatment of the self. The discipline is ruthless internally: uncut hair you cannot trim for convenience, a sword you must carry to honor a duty, a bracelet that touches every wrist. But this severity is directed inward, not outward. You hold yourself to a higher standard than anyone else demands of you. This prevents the arrogance that comes from easy virtue. You don’t judge the other; you discipline the self.

Pitfall 5: Separating Love from Reality

The Trap: We think the end state is a trance of bliss where fear disappears, or we think "knowledge" replaces "devotion." We separate the bhakti (love) from the jnana (wisdom). The Reframe: Love is what self-regard becomes when boundaries dissolve. No one hates their own self. When the distinction between "me" and "not-me" thins, that ordinary self-love simply expands to cover everything. It doesn't ignore danger—the snake still scares you. You fear its bite, but you also love it for its capacity to kill you. Fear and wonder ride together. The endpoint isn’t the absence of reaction; it’s the completion of it. Accurate fear plus boundless awe.

Pitfall 6: Expecting the Truth to Be Spoken Clearly

The Trap: We ask why the masters never explain this "technology" openly. We assume the truth is hidden or suppressed.The Reframe: The unspoken nature is functional, not conspiratorial. The truth cannot be spoken because it is a state of being, not data. Poetry performs what prose claims. To state it plainly would be to reduce it to information, which kills the transmission. The tradition relies on living practice (sangat, elders modeling) rather than manuals. When the human chain breaks (diaspora), the rituals remain, but the function is lost, leading to the very debates we’re stuck in now.

The Unspoken Clarity

When you apply these reframes, the system snaps into focus. Sikhi is not a theology to be defended, but a system of attention management.

1. Input: Words borrowed from culture (Ram, Parent, Light).
2. Process: Disciplines that rewire the body (K’s, Langar, Naam).
3. Output: A transformed perception where "Waheguru is in everyone" is as intuitive as gravity.

The reason it’s not articulated cleanly is that articulation is not the method of delivery. The method is the practice. The text is the instruction manual that refuses to say "do this to feel this"—because the feeling cannot be described, only induced.

If this framework is right, the goal of Sikhi isn't heaven or salvation. It’s a shift from believing in the all-pervading divine to perceiving it—achieving a state where connection to existence is effortless, constant, and includes the parts that frighten us.

Whether this is "truth" or "useful fiction" doesn't matter for the practice. What matters is whether the technology works. And the evidence suggests: when practiced this way, it does. The rest is just commentary.

So, this has nothing to do with Sikhi, in general. but one thing that really bugs me is my constant hairfall and poor hair health. Especially when I see my other sikh/sardaar brothers who have such long, luscious and voluminous hair.

I used to have really long and healthy hair with a nice, big joorha. But now as days go by, I can see it significantly changing.
