I'm a high-school student preparing for a competitive Physics exam, and I've noticed a problem in my Physics learning that I don't really know how to fix.
I can learn the theory and understand what the equations are saying at a basic level. I can memorize/use formulas and sometimes follow a derivation. But in my mind, many Physics concepts still feel like mathematical symbols rather than something physical that I can actually picture or reason about.
For example, I might know an equation and understand its theoretical meaning, but when I encounter a complex or unfamiliar problem, I often can't immediately translate the information into a physical picture:
- What is actually happening physically?
- What should I visualize?
- Which quantities should I connect?
- What should I try first?
- Which principles might be relevant?
As a result, when I see a difficult problem, my mind can almost go blank even though I technically know the concepts involved. I can sometimes understand the solution once someone explains it, but generating the approach myself is much harder.
I'm trying to understand whether this is mainly a lack of physical intuition/visualization, a lack of problem-solving experience, or both.
For people who are good at solving unfamiliar Physics problems—especially Physics Olympiad students, university students, teachers, or physicists:
1. How did you develop the ability to mentally visualize what equations and concepts actually represent physically?
2. When you encounter a completely unfamiliar problem, what do you consciously do in the first few minutes?
3. How do you turn a problem statement into a physical model before writing equations?
4. Can physical intuition and visualization be deliberately trained, or does it mainly develop after solving a very large number of problems?
5. What kind of practice would you recommend for someone whose main weakness is going from "I know the theory" → "I can actually reason with it in an unfamiliar situation"?
I'm not really looking for advice like "practice more" or "understand the concepts." I'm trying to understand what the actual mental process of an experienced problem solver looks like, and how a beginner can deliberately train that process.
