Announcement Notability Cloud, Privacy, and How to Opt Out

Hi everyone! We've seen a few questions and concerns recently about Notability Cloud, so we wanted to clarify a few things.

First, using Notability Cloud is optional. While we've been encouraging users to try it because it solves long-standing syncing and data loss issues associated with iCloud and local storage, you are not required to use it. If you prefer to keep using local storage or iCloud, you can disable Notability Cloud reminders. To disable, go to Notability Settings > Account.

This option is available in versions 16.5.3 and 16.5.4 for users who are signed in to their Notability account. Users who are not signed in will be able to access this option shortly, our engineers are actively working on adding support for those users. We added this setting after hearing feedback from this community that the reminders were becoming disruptive.

Why do we recommend Notability Cloud? It provides a more reliable sync experience, helps prevent data loss, and enables features like Live Collaboration and syncing across iOS, Android, Web, and, in the future, Windows. But whether you use it is entirely your choice.

We also want to address a concern we've seen raised about privacy. We do not use your notes to train AI. We only access a user's notes when we have their explicit written permission to help troubleshoot a support issue. You can read more about how we handle your data in our Privacy Policy here.

We appreciate everyone who has shared feedback, both positive and critical. Reddit has been instrumental in helping us improve Notability, and feedback from this community directly led to the addition of the reminder toggle. We'll continue listening and making changes where we can.

If you have any questions about Notability Cloud, privacy, or storage options, we're happy to answer them here šŸ’™

Announcement šŸ“Œ Help & Support: Please Read Before Posting

Hi everyone!

We're looking to improve how we support users here and help resolve issues more quickly and efficiently. A big part of that is making sure we have the right information upfront when issues are reported. This helps both the community and our team troubleshoot faster and more effectively.

Big thanks to u/TrubbishBish for suggesting we post a standardized process for support-related inquires. This is a really helpful idea, and we appreciate you taking the time to think about how we can improve the subreddit experience for everyone!

Experiencing syncing issues or missing notes?

Please contact Support as soon as possible.

Step 1: Submit a support ticket through the app. To contact Support go to Notability Settings > Help > Contact Support.

This is important because it gives our team access to device diagnostics, which can help identify the root cause of the issue during the investigation.

Step 2: After submitting your ticket, DM u/kaylanotability with (chat not mod mail):

  • The email address associated with your Notability account
  • A brief summary of your issue

From there, your case will be escalated to our Support team. If needed, Engineering will review the issue as well, and our team will follow up with you via email as soon as possible.

Experiencing a bug or feature issue?

If you're experiencing issues such as lag, freezing, app hangs, or problems with features (such as Learn), please include the following information in your post:

  • What device are you using? (iPad, iPhone, Mac, Android, Web, etc.)
  • Are you connected to stable Wi-Fi/internet?
  • Have you restarted your device recently?
  • Have you restarted the Notability app?
  • What OS version are you using? (Please double-check that it's up to date.)
  • What version of Notability are you using?
  • What subscription do you have? (Starter, Plus, etc.)
  • Are you using iCloud or Notability Cloud for sync?

*Please note: While the details above help with troubleshooting, some app-related issues may not be fully resolved on Reddit and may still require contacting Support for further investigation.

Thank you all for being a part of the Notability community! We appreciate your feedback, bug reports, feature requests, and willingness to help one another šŸ’™

Question Forgot Locked folders password

I locked some of my folders but forgot the password (I created the password in 2023 and forgot it in like 2024/2025) is there any way to get my notes back or like reset the password? and I dont have a backup! I also can’t use touch ID or Face ID. But for some reason I can access some of them because I added them to my favourites which is good but not good at the same time as it bypasses the lock?

Announcement Notes Missing After Signing In to Your Notability Account?

Hi everyone,

We know some users were recently logged out of their Notability accounts as a precaution, and some of you may have noticed that your notes appeared to be missing after signing back in.

If you signed in to your Notability account and your library looks empty or incomplete, your notes are very likely safe. We took a closer look and found that in many cases, the notes weren’t actually missing. Users were signed into a different Notability account than the one where their notes were stored.

What should I do if my notes appear to be missing?

1. Check which account you're signed into

Open Settings in Notability and look at the account email at the top.

If it isn't the address you expect, sign out and sign back in with the right one. Your notes come back with the account.

This restores notes in most cases. It's easy to end up with two accounts without realizing it, especially if you've used both a personal and a school or work email, or signed up with Sign in with Apple on one device and an email address on another.

2. If the email doesn't look familiar

An address ending in privaterelay.appleid.com means you signed up with Sign in with Apple and chose to hide your email. Apple created that address for you, and there's no password attached to it.

To get back in, choose Sign in with Apple on the sign-in screen and use the same Apple account you originally signed up with. Entering that address with a password won't work.

3. Check other places in your library

If your library is mostly there but specific notes or folders are missing, check:

Recently deleted. Notes stay here for 30 days after you delete them, and you can restore them from this list.

Unfiled notes. Notes that aren't in a subject live outside your subject list.

Collapsed subjects. A collapsed subject in the sidebar can hide a whole group of notes at once.

4. Confirm your notes are on our servers

Sign in at notability.com in a browser using the same account.

If your notes are there, they're stored safely, and the issue is on your device, not in your account. Check that you're connected to the internet, then leave Notability open for a few minutes so it can finish syncing.

5. Still can't find them?

Please contact support through the app. Go to Notability settings > Help > Contact support. After doing so, DM u/kaylanotability your email address.

Writing in from the app includes details about your account and is usually the fastest way to get an answer.

When you write in, please share details about:

  • What you're missing: your whole library, particular notes, or specific folders
  • When you last saw your notes

FAQ

I signed back in to my Notability account and my notes are gone. What happened?

Almost always, your notes are safe and you're signed into a different account than the one holding them. Nothing has been deleted.

How do I check which Notability account I'm using?

Open Settings in Notability and look at the account email listed there. If it isn't the address you expect, sign out and sign back in with the right one.

I don't recognize the email on my Notability account. Why?

If it ends in privaterelay.appleid.com, you signed up with Sign in with Apple and chose to hide your email. Choose Sign in with Apple on the sign-in screen and use the same Apple account you started with.

My library is there, but some notes or folders are missing.

Check Recently deleted, your unfiled notes, and any collapsed subjects in the sidebar. Notes are often just somewhere unexpected rather than gone.

How can I tell whether my notes are actually safe?

Sign in at notability.com with the same account. If your notes are there, they're stored safely, and only your device is out of sync.

We know this was stressful, especially when it looked like notes had disappeared. We’re sorry for the confusion and really appreciate everyone’s patience while we worked through this.

Does anyone know how to see what space each note takes? I’m currently using over 9GB and I want to weed out any large files/notes I don’t need anymore.

Android Android version-Pen actions not working

Hi... I have an OnePlus Pad 4 with a stylus pen. The pen actions like double-tapping for eraser, are not working in my Notability app. Is it a known issue/bug and the team is working on it? Just wanted to know if others are facing the same problem

Import/Export Images Import Issue

I imported an image in an existing note in notability ipad app but it became very pixilated upon zooming in.

At first, I tried taking a screenshot natively in the app and then pasting in some other note. But it came pixelated.

Secondly, I tried Ipad's own screenshot feature and imported the same. That too became very pixelated.

Have tried other note-taking apps as well in the past but never faced this issue on any other app.

Anyone else facing this?

Can we expect a fix for this issue soon?

Data Loss I have been trying to contact support for days

I used my undergrad email to sign up for notability because they paid our subscriptions. Unfortunately they reached out after graduation saying they were ending the contract with the email domain holder and our emails would be deleted. I tried to change my account email and it would not let me in notability. I tried long before this update. To keep all my notes I thought I would be fine since it was Touch ID prior. Well the recent update that logged me out… well it logged me out entirely. It was set to log in through SSO so I never set up a password. I can’t get the reset link because the email doesn’t exist. I can’t enter the password because the password doesn’t exist. I filled out the form and the AI bot reached out saying this was a complex issue and I would need to confirm my identity with a human agent. Which would be fine if they had a support phone number or 24/7 live chat but I’m in optometry school full time and have had no access to my notes since Saturday. I have already had 2 quizzes with no notes of my own. Where is the human agent? They haven’t reached out. Why does the app not have a way to change the email associated with the account? (It’s not the email for the Apple ID either) the cloud sync was on and everything I just can’t get into the account it’s saved to. I’m struggling with school and have lost access to my 2,447 notes. All I want is to talk to a human and get this resolved quickly so I can get back to normal studying. This has been a horrible week and experience with customer service.

Question Tired of Notability after 6 years — thinking of switching to GoodNotes. Any recommendations?

I’m dental student and I’ve been using Notability for about 6 years, and I think I’m finally done with it.
Recently, all of my notes somehow got deleted. I was eventually able to recover them, but now everything is completely unfiled. I have over 1,200 notes spanning six years of school, and they’re basically all dumped together with no organization.
At this point, the thought of reorganizing everything is exhausting, and I’m honestly just tired of dealing with Notability.
I’m thinking about switching to either GoodNotes or noteshelf, but I’m leaning pretty heavily toward GoodNotes since I mainly use my iPad for handwritten notes, PDFs, lectures, etc.
For anyone who has switched from Notability to GoodNotes, was it worth it? How has your experience been with reliability, organization, backups, and syncing?
And if there are any other apps you’d recommend instead, I’m open to suggestions.
I just really don’t want to go through something like this again.

Question Scribble in notability

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently got an iPad Air M4 13-inch with an Apple Pencil Pro, mainly for work, reading, and taking notes. I spend most of my day sitting at my PC for work, so I wanted something that would let me continue reading/studying and taking notes from the couch without having to go back to my PC and sit at a desk again.

The problem is that, after a few days of using it, I'm really struggling with the multitasking and note-taking experience. I'm mainly using Notability for notes, and I'm wondering if I'm just using it wrong or if this is something other people experience too.

My biggest issue is Scribble/text boxes. When I want to type something using the Apple Pencil, it seems like I have to write directly next to the line/text box. When I'm taking notes, the available space can be pretty tight, and it doesn't feel natural or comfortable to constantly have to position myself in a specific spot.

I also find myself constantly having to manually resize the text box every time I start writing. I've tried making the text box much wider so I can write from basically anywhere on the page, but then Notability will randomly move the text to the next line, meaning I have to go back and adjust the line again.

I have tried Goodnotes recently and I find it better with how I can scribble anywhere and still be typing in the same line however, that's the only thing I like about Goodnotes and since I already have my notes in notability I really don't wanna switch I know I can import but is there's anyway to work this around in notability

Bug Smart Notes bug and support AI can't understand

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm a new Notability user, and recently, some of my Smart Notes have bugged out (see image) and show raw, unformatted strings. I've tried every which way to get it to reset them or regenerate the notes, but I can't figure out how to fix it.

I've emailed support, but the AI support bot can't understand what I'm trying to convey. Does anyone know how to fix?

Question Android options

Hey, what features is the Android version missing? I'm wondering how everything works, but most of the features I want to try require the paid version. I don't want to make a blind purchase, so that's why I'm asking. I'd like to try math conversion and live smart notes, so if anyone have used these I'm all ears to hear about these.

Web app Notability on Windows is a web-app..

Post image

I was really hoping for a native app on Windows, this is a bit of a bummer. The app is quite feature-complete on Windows, but one can notice that simple interactions like zooming with fingers or drawing ink is a bit slow?

I usually compare the experience to the Windows Snipping Tool since that feels really snappy. I hope this can be tackled in the future, I love my Surface Laptop Studio and simply want a note-taking app that feels good on my laptop!

I already have Notability Lite and use it on my iPad and its night and day using it there.

What are your guys thoughts on the Windows version?

Bug smart notes errors

so i have notability on both my ipad and my lap top as the app. i usually copy down the smart notes it generates from the lecture slides & transcript into the smart notes along with my textbook onto a separate notes page. lately on both the laptop app and ipad app my smart notes won’t generate and says ā€œcheck your wi-fi or data settings then try againā€ ive used notability for years on the same wifi’s. ive tried different ones too but it still happens.

is this a bug from the recent app crash? i was never logged out or anything but i notice there has been some glitches on both app versions and then this smart notes error? is it genuinely my wifi or a bug?

Other Long time user since 2021, request regarding the 5-note limit

Hi Notability team, I've been using Notability since 2021 and it has been my main note-taking app ever since …through my studies and everything after. I've never been able to afford the full subscription, so I stayed on the free tier and worked within the daily/monthly editing limits. It wasn't ideal, but it was workable, and I stuck with the app because I genuinely like it. So I have to be honest: seeing the free tier reduced to a total limit of 5 notes was really disappointing. A monthly or daily cap is a limit you can plan around. A hard cap of 5 notes total effectively ends the free tier for anyone who has years of notes in the app and it feels like a very different deal from the one long-time users signed up for. I'm not writing to complain and leave. I'd genuinely like to keep using Notability and I'd like to pay for it if I can. At one point I was shown a regional price of around ₹400 for a year. I couldn't afford it then, but I can now. Would it be possible to have that pricing made available to me again? If that isn't possible, would you consider restoring a monthly editing limit for accounts like mine instead of the 5-note total cap? Either option would let me carry on with the app I've relied on for years. Please get back to me if you need my account details, I would be happy to share them
Thank you for your time

Question LaTeX Math Conversion

Hey! I recently got an ipad and I'm currently thinking of buying notability for notetaking and writing math. Something I was wondering is how good is the math conversion? I saw some posts from a few years ago but I wanted to know if it's worth buying the one-time purchase of notability for latex math conversion since I can see myself using this feature frequently

Bug Lag problem still persist

Am I the only one experiencing lag problem while writing after using the app for a very short amount of time ? It’s very annoying and it force me to restart the app every single time. It’s been a month since this problem showed up, I really hope devs can do something about it cause it seems they are not even aware of it I guess.
