article Is it just me that doesn't want to know too much about my favourite band/artist?

Post image
207 Upvotes

I just want the music.

Sure, I will know their names and what they look like (most of the time), but I do not want to hear from them outside of their music. I will not watch interviews of my favourite artists. I will not watch music documentaries, or read their autobiographies. I am not on social media outside of Reddit, but I would hate to see the day-to-day life of a musician that creates, in my opinion, some of the most spectacular music on the planet. It takes away the magic.

I know some fans want to know every little detail about the bands/artists and would consider me a fake fan for not wanting to, but the music means just as much to me as this 'super fan'.

Where do you stand on this? Do you want to know all about them?

I believe Maggot Brain by Funkadelic is the greatest guitar solo of all time. Better than Hotel California, better than Purple Rain, better than any iconic guitar solo. Ten minutes of nothing but pure raw emotion all under. Perfection. Highly recommend the entire album as a whole if you haven’t already heard it.

discussion Did you witness MTV’s launch on 8/1/1981 or get MTV in its first few months?

If so, care to share your experiences?

How old were you and what part of the country did you live? (Bonus points if you grew up in an MTV test market). :)

Did you have any favorite videos from those earliest of days?

Were there any really obscure videos that you were a fan of or bands you never heard of and soon became a fan?

I’ve been an early MTV fan/researcher for the past nearly 20 years and love to hear stories of the earliest days, with biggest focus on Aug to Dec of 81.

Thanks all.

EDIT: I never thought this would get so much attention as quickly as it did. I am SO grateful for your memories and responses. If I don't reply or like your comment tonight then I will do so when I can.

And please send me a private message if you're interested in a project I'm working on about early MTV!

My pick is definitely “Wouldn’t it be Nice” by the Beach Boys. I get that Pet Sounds is a music geek cliche, but how can you beat that opening? It’s so nice and full of life and it makes me happy whenever I listen to it.
