Welcome back to the deep-dive series. Previously, we disassembled nylon and X-Pac and, along the way, learned about polymers, weaves, deniers, and laminates, collecting the building blocks needed to understand modern fabrics. Today, it’s time to learn all about Ultra. Let’s dive in.
UHMWPE stands for ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. That's a mouthful, so sometimes it’s pronounced “umpe.” Now, about the polyethylene part.
Polyethylene is a polymer—it's made of long-chain molecules, just like nylon and polyester, but with a different chemical structure. Polyethylene chains are built from repeating ethylene units, giving it different properties than the amide bonds in nylon or the ester bonds in polyester, but the principle is the same.
Fun fact: you likely held polyethylene in your hands today, because that is what plastic bags are made of. Why? Well, first, it’s cheap, but beyond that, polyethylene can be incredibly thin and still hold impressive weight—the chains are flexible enough to stretch and deform under load instead of snapping, which is why a grocery bag with a small tear doesn't immediately split open. Not all polyethylene is made equal, and one of the major factors is molecular weight.
Molecular weight is the mass of a single polymer chain. The longer the chain, the higher the molecular weight. This weight is measured in daltons. One dalton is roughly the mass of a single hydrogen atom. Your plastic bag is tens of thousands of daltons. UHMWPE is millions of daltons — way, way longer chains.
The result: UHMWPE fiber is, gram for gram, stronger than steel. Not figuratively, not in a roundabout marketing way—actually stronger. A UHMWPE fiber of the same weight as a steel wire can hold significantly more load before breaking. That means you need less material to hold the same weight, which is why UHMWPE shows up in applications where every gram matters: climbing ropes, body armor, and ultralight backpacking gear.
So UHMWPE is incredibly strong. But what else should you know about this material?
UHMWPE is a material category, but when you see UHMWPE in actual products, it’s usually marketed under one of two major brand names:
Challenge Sailcloth, the maker of Ultra fabric, uses non-branded UHMWPE in their laminates, meaning the same fundamental material but no Dyneema or Spectra licensing.
Ultra is a series of laminate fabrics by Challenge Outdoor, the soft-goods division of Challenge Sailcloth. Similar to X-Pac, Ultra has a variety of options that differ in the number of layers and face fabric. Let’s take a look at Ultra 400X as an example.
Similar to X-Pac X3 series, the Ultra 400X has three layers:
And just like X-Pac X4, the Ultra 400TX adds another layer of thin 70D polyester ripstop backing.
Before going further, I want to note the reason behind Ultra and X-Pac similarities and talk about Hale Walcoff.
Hale Walcoff was a sailing world champion and a veteran of technical textiles who spent years at Dimension-Polyant developing many of the X-Pac variants on the market today. If you've used an X-Pac bag, there's a good chance Hale designed that fabric.
After leaving Dimension-Polyant, he partnered with Challenge Sailcloth to develop Ultra—a new generation of laminates that took the X-Pac design philosophy (woven face, cross-ply reinforcement, waterproof film backing) and rebuilt it. The structural similarities aren't a coincidence—they're the same design approach applied to a different fiber.
Hale passed away in 2023, but his work on Ultra continues through Challenge Sailcloth.
We’ve touched on Dyneema in the context of branded UHMWPE fiber, but there is also a series of Dyneema Composite fabrics with rather confusing naming.
The Dyneema Composite Fabric is not a fabric in the traditional sense; it’s a polyester-film sandwich. Between two sheets of waterproof polyester film, UHMWPE fibers are aligned to form a grid, but there is no woven face fabric. This makes DCF significantly lighter at 99 grams per square meter, compared to 132 grams for Ultra 200X and 210 grams for X-Pac VX21.
The Dyneema Composite Hybrid replaces the outer layer of polyester film with a woven fabric, usually 50D polyester or nylon, making the structure much more similar to three-layer variants of X-Pac and Ultra.
Ultra usually uses a much higher-denier blend of UHMWPE and polyester (from 200D to 800D), making it a better choice for EDC and travel bags that require more abrasion and tear resistance, while DCF makes perfect sense for ultralight hiking bags.
It's another fabric series from Challenge Outdoor. Same laminate technology but instead of UHMWPE it's 100% recycled polyester. The EPX variants come as four-layer laminates with a 70D ripstop polyester backing. Direct competitor to X-Pac variants usually used in EDC and travel bags.
Before jumping into the specs table, note a few things:

What stands out:
With those specs for tear strength and abrasion resistance, it looks like Ultra can take a beating — and it can. Miyagi has put the Waymark backpack that uses 200D Ultra (with 400D on the bottom) through extreme testing:
The bag took everything like a champ. True testament to Ultra's durability and confirmation of these impressive specs. Oh, and go watch the full video by 'Miyagi on the Trail' after you finish reading this post — it's legendary.
Since Ultra is a laminate that uses adhesive to bond layers together, there is still the same risk of delamination that I’ve mentioned in the X-Pac post. It’s not likely that you’ll ever encounter delamination on your bag, but it’s worth keeping in mind.
One notable mention before we wrap up. Graflyte (made by ALUULA Composites) is a newer UHMWPE-based fabric that's entering the ultralight pack market. Here's what distinguishes it:
This fabric is still only making its way into the ultralight world, so it might be a while before we see it used on EDC and travel packs.
You want the strongest, most abrasion-resistant fabric available and you're okay paying for it. Ultra can take a beating. From daily commute to overhead bins to mountain trails, Ultra delivers the peace of mind that your bag will be fine no matter what.

Went on a business trip to New York with a roller suitcase and my Able Carry Max EDC in blue X-Pac.
While I was there, I checked out UrbanCred in Brooklyn. They have a pretty nice selection across Aer, Evergoods, Able Carry, Black Ember, and a few other brands. Ended up picking up these two babies!
I also figured I’d share a quick review of the bags I’ve been using, in case it’s helpful to anyone here.
The FYRO Citta 18L has been my go-to EDC for work and business travel lately. Before this trip, I was actually on the fence about selling my Able Carry Max EDC. My main complaints were the weight and the side-access layout.
In particular, I never loved how the water bottle pocket faces downward when the bag is sitting sideways on top of a roller. It makes taking the bottle out to drink or refill it more annoying than it should be. I basically decided I’d give the Max EDC one more business trip before making the call.
TL;DR: Not selling it :)
After using it heavily throughout the trip, a few things changed for me.
First, I’ve become more patient with the strap adjustments and, for whatever reason, the weight bothers me less than it used to.
Second, the side-access setup has grown on me:
Water bottle: Still a pain. I’ve mostly given up on the dedicated bottle pocket while traveling and just throw my bottle into the large front pocket instead.
Laptop access: I originally thought the side laptop access was significantly worse than Evergoods. But with the bag sitting sideways on top of my roller, pulling the laptop out is actually pretty easy.
Other pockets: Both the main compartment and the large front pocket remain surprisingly accessible while the bag is on the luggage. I think the structure of the X-Pac helps a lot here. I’ve also started putting chargers and other small items into the hidden mesh pocket inside the front compartment—which, embarrassingly, I somehow didn’t realize existed before this trip.
More than anything, though, I’ve started appreciating the sense of confidence the bag gives me while traveling.
Getting out of an Uber and grabbing the bag by that beefy side handle just feels good. And being able to quickly stuff bulky things like a sling, jacket, or random travel items into the huge front pocket is incredibly useful when you’re constantly switching between airport, Uber, hotel, office, etc.
It’s still not a light bag, and the bottle-pocket orientation still annoys me. But after actually living with it through a full business trip, I understand the design a lot better—and I’m definitely keeping it.

Had been looking at options for a compact way to lug around my OP-1 and realised that it’s almost the same dimensions as a Steam Deck/Switch etc., so I started looking at bags built specifically for them.
Turns out it's a perfect fit, and sits nicely even with the decksaver synth cover on the OP-1.
Came across the Genki Saya Carry and thought I’d give it a go.
It’s got plenty of internal organisation. The ‘console’ pouch is just plain padded, but you have access at the side via the Fidlock, so there’s no need to unzip it all the way to get the console/synth out.
The main compartment has a soft padded separator and plenty of elastic loops to organise stuff, plenty of room for wires, powerbank, chargers etc.
Little front pocket with a key leash.
Small back pocket.
Seems like a great bag, the only dislike is the whole back of it is neoprene which is both sweaty and probably long term a bit too stretchy, so not sure how it will hold up where the straps/handle are anchored.
I added a phone pouch to the main strap so I can have my phone and a couple of other bits quickly accessible, it's just a cheap Aliexpress thing which I cut down and sewed to just have the main phone pouch (originally it had additional pockets and was a lot longer)
I did an order from Amazon.jp to the UK recently to get a few 'EDC' bits, some of which are pictured here.
KiU Compact Umbrella K417 - It’s SO tiny and light. So small that I’ll always have it in the bag for that unpredictable UK weather.
Poketle 180 Hang bottle - Only enough for a small coffee, but it’s insulated and I’m not really one for carrying around huge amounts of water with me anyway (dehydration gang), small enough to fit inside but also sits perfectly on the bottom loop straps on the underside of the bag. The lid also acts as a clip so easy to just hang off various bag straps.
Shupatto folding tote bag - Got a couple of these in different sizes (pictured is the M). Absolutely genius ‘snap’ folding system. Rolls up so small but can fit a lot in it. The L is still compact and opens up to the size of an IKEA bag.
KiU poncho K404 - Doesn’t fit inside the Saya, but comes with a roll-top clip bag so I can clip it to the strap, haven't tried it out in torrential rain yet but apparently it's rated to 20,000mm so should be good for it on days where the mini brella isn't going to cut it.
Got a little Nitecore EDC09 flashlight on the way too which should fit nicely.
(That's a little Zelda Korok Airpod case I got cheap off Aliexpress, glued it shut and then threaded onto one of the cinch straps - also added a Godspeed You! Black Emperor patch I had lying around to the front 🤘)

I’m not sure if there’s another sub that would be better for this, but I’m looking for recommendations for durable, tough wheeled duffel bags. So far, I’ve narrowed it down to the Osprey Shuttle Sojourn 100, Osprey Transporter 90, and The North Face Base Camp Rolling Thunder 28.
For those who have owned or used these, how do they compare in terms of long-term durability, wheels, handles, zippers, and overall build quality? Would you recommend one over the others?

Hey all, avid many bagger for many different areas of my life. For some reason collecting bags has become a hobby and a niche interest.
I’m currently in a stage in life where I really only need a daily pocket dump when I’m not heading to work or the gym. I’m currently working with the Bellroy x Carryology Essentials sling, this is a great sling, great organization, wear, feel and everything else. I have minimal issues with it. The main issue I have is my pocket dump does not fill this sling up so I find myself with a fairly empty sling. I could add a few things back into it to fill it up but they aren’t necessarily needed. The extra space is nice when I need to toss a few extra things in it though.
I’ve been looking at the Chrome Kadet Micro as my pocket dump. It’s smaller, fits easier in my backpack if I have one that day, and also has the stabilizer strap option which is great as I am a bike commuter to pretty much anything in my town. I’m wondering how people may feel about this bag, has it been worth the purchase or do you find yourself wanting more space? I will attach a picture of my EDC (lol) and let you guys see what insight you have for me.
I’m willing to hear other options of bag considerations, or just being told to continue rocking my Bellroy as the only downsides are size and that lack of stabilizer strap.

Looking for advice.
I travel and bring quite a bit of camera gear with me. I currently have the Shimoda Action X40 v2 with the large camera cube inside and it is full. It also weighs a lot and I'm worried about getting asked at the airport to weigh it and then check it which I don't trust them to take care of so I want to carry it on.
I noticed that the Peak Design Roller Pro can take a camera cube and it looks like a normal suit case and it rolls so it shouldn't look heavy or need to get weighed. But, I need a backpack once i get to destination to get around with my camera gear on hikes. So my idea is to pack a good backpack into my checked luggage along with my clothes and other items (camera gear stays with me in the roller pro).
I'm wondering if the Peak Design 45L Outdoor bag will pack small/flat/roll if empty and i can put it in a second suit case with my clothing and then use it once I get to destination.
Has anyone else done this for camera travel? What bags and cubes did you land on?

Hi! I recently purchased the topo nessenger. And its way smaller than I anticipated. Main laptop does not fit at all. And the 14 inch I have is diffocult to put in and take out.
Looking for something a little roomier.
I love pockets.
But the briefcase/leather/minimalism stuff doesnt speak to me. Looking for something durable and more casual.
And can also hold a 24oz waterbottle. Each bag Ive ever seen or had either has no side pockets or theyre too small.
Anyone have any recommendations?
Also open to a backpack as well. I currently use a 40-50L. Wanting to downsize.
Pictures is what I have used. And the black one is just inspo I guess.

For my once a year travel, I’m looking for a carryon that meets the following requirements:
- affordable (so no Briggs and Riley type prices)
- spinner
- small enough so that it meets most international flights (except extreme ones like Ryan Air) carryon limits
- dedicated sleeve or section for keeping documents from getting crumpled (so the main compartment items should not compress the papers)
- laptop sleeve that’s easily accessible for security
- small items pocket for random things like keys, headphones, etc.
- easily accessible pocket (could be same as above) for things like toiletries in the clear bag for security, power bank, chargers, etc.
Nice to haves:
- power bank hookup would be a nice to have but by no means a necessity
- it would be nice to have organization pockets like how Thule does for its backpacks so you can have dedicated spots for key items like keys, passport, power bank, cables, etc.
- expansion zippers so that if I have more stuff than expected, I can expand the storage a bit

I am looking for a sling to replace the NIID Neo Nomad Sling N2. The strap on that bag started to come apart after a few uses. Since NIID has ignored my emails looking for warranty support, I am looking to cut my loses and just get a new bag from another brand.
I am looking for a sling that is of a similar size as the N2 (9L) or a bit smaller. The thing I really liked about the N2 is its divided compartment for the water bottle, while having enough space for a Kindle and an Nintendo Switch 2 in the main compartment. The thing I disliked is the lack of padding and the strap is also a bit uncomfortable.
Lastly, if anyone is looking to buy a bag from NIID, I would recommend against it. They ignored my email pre-sale requesting information (I know this should be a red flag), and they also ignore emails post-sale when you need their supports.

Looking to replace a Stuart & Lau Regimen gym bag which I find to be too small. Want a bigger bag that also fits in a standard gym locker, and is also cool/stylish.
This one looks great; wondering if anyone has one. I may carry 2 pairs of shoes, slides a change of clothes, small toiletries bag, and a big bottle of water, plus wallet and keys.

I picked up an Alpaka Flight Sling 2l and really like it but plan on returning it due to the size of the magnetic pocket on the back. I was hoping to keep my iphone 16 pro or my passport when traveling in there. Unfortunately neither of those fit in the back pocket (passport is in a sleeve).
I like the build quality of the Alpaka, the strap length the organization included. I do prefer to have a zipper compartment on the inside to wrangle small things, but figured if everything else was good that wasn't a big deal. The size of the magnetic back packet though is a dealbreaker for me unfortunately.
In looking at getting something else that may fit my needs better I'm leaning toward the Aer Day Sling 4. Are there any other options to consider that are very similar to these?

I broke down and ordered it and chose the naval blue. The colour is gorgeous. It's a stunning navy! On reviews I always questioned the interior colour and it is much nicer than I expected. It only arrived yesterday and I already started packing it out for a very quick trip I have coming up next weekend. Initial impressions are excellent.
The main compartment at first glance is slightly deeper at one end then the other but upon putting items in there it really makes no difference to the functionality. The laptop area looks so nicely protected that I won't have to use my laptop sleeve which I appreciate. The second main area I was aware because of the side pockets you would lose some space but I was able to put in a pair of dress shoes and there is still some room left.
I appreciate the included liquids bag and tech pouch. I carry a lot more tech than can fit in this but I can see myself using it as in flight bag or to store certain tech items together. I have to see how much can fit in the clear liquids bag yet. I love that they both have their one little spot in the bag.
The two front pockets are not huge but I can see storing my pocket 4p in one of them. I wonder if they put jut one larger pocket in the front instead of 2 if it would have been more functional? I just wish it would fit my over the ear headphones in one but with all the access points they will fit somewhere else in the bag. I guess if it was one main pocket you would probably end up over stuffing it and then the bag would look huge. The other front long pocket is very narrow but deep and I can see it being useful for my needs for some paperwork, pens ect.
Overall the bag is gorgeous and I am glad I decided to get the backpack instead of the duffle as there are times I check my main bag for various reasons and I don't like to carry a heavy shoulder bag around the airport. Nomad Lane good job on this!

Just received my Pakt One Travel Backpack. I was excited because my work is 75% travel to all sorts of fun places. The bag is a great IDEA with poor execution and no support, which is a terrible mix. Main issue for me amongst many was that the circles that hold the zipper pulls are too narrow in diameter to stay on the zipper. If you pull it at the wrong angle, it comes right off in your hand with <2lbs of pressure. Their customer service is NEVER available. I tried chatting/calling and nothing. Emails take 2-days at least. For this price, this is absolutely unacceptable. Let me know if you know of a better quality alternative that is a similar build. I was willing to pay the premium for something I could have for life but it's not engineered to last. Sadly I am out the $50 I paid in overnight shipping since I wanted the bag for a work trip departing tomorrow.

I need a help finding a personal bag as someone who travels with minimal tech. I don’t need space wasted on a padded laptop pocket. I’d rather a tote, briefcase or duffel style with an crossbody strap, some structure and luggage pass through. I mostly fly US airlines but occasionally Air Canada.
I have a Fjallraven High Coast Totebag and it’s been great, just want more structure & a horizontal orientation.

I was looking for a 1-2 night weekender when I go visit my parents. Took a risk and bought it online. It was kind of pricy at $200 usd but was able to find a 20% coupon. (Still pricey).
Overall, great solid bag. I like how it looks. Will be keeping it. -Fits 14" laptop, with about ~1.5 inches of space -Self stands. -Luggage passthrough but can zip up as a pocket. -Decent comfy padded straps for short trips.

Love the simple and fun design, got the large sized one, and it fits perfectly for everyday carry. My iPhone 17 pro, magsafe powerbank, magnetic tripod, airpods, wallet, 1L bottle.
there’s 2 place front and bag each have it’s own compartment. The middle is for the bottle, so neat!
It’s a bit pricey, specially the strap since it’s sold separately, but i f with design so lol, there’s many better alternative with this range of price such as the mageasy sacoche, or bellroy lite, timbuk, monterey, but I’d personally choose this.

I’m trying to find the perfect bag for college. i just got a pretty huge laptop so its doesn’t fit in most backpacks i tried fitting it in the north face jester and borealis neither fit but then someone with the same exact laptop told me that it fits in the north face Recon. I found the perfect color choice for me and everything but then i realized these two don’t exactly look the same but they have the same name so how come? Does anybody know if they’re the same exact size?
Also can i get recommendations on backpacks that can fit a 16 inch gaming laptop, are comfortable, and dont look like am carrying a carry on suitcase on my back
