I've tried Linux on and off for years but it never stuck with me. My laptop coincidentally fell apart about the time Win10 support ended. I grabbed a $50 business machine on ebay, switched to Mint and was happy, but it felt too hand-holdy and windows adjacent. I switched to MX and never looked back. I'm running sysvinit and xfce for lower overhead and I can't say anything negative. This old E5440 feels great; aside from disabling the Optimus driven NVIDIA card and a widely unsupported fingerprint reader, this machine acts like it was built for this. I've learned a ton and the more I settle into the system, the less it resembles windows.

One thing that's hard to really impress on someone that hasn't used linux is how much more personal the system becomes. Windows is a big cookie cutter with access (often paid) to lots things lots of people might need. Linux is the opposite: an environment you can shape to meet your needs so that your machine does what you need it to do the way you like it done. I laughed when I saw Conky at first boot because it's so 15 years ago. It reminded me of modding WinXP/8 with Rainmeter as a kid. But thinking on it again, that was peak Windows! I actually enjoyed my OS back then and MX gave me that feeling back. Thanks, MX Team

MX linux is genuinely a good distro, had it on my old lenovo laptop for some time, worked great.

Love your story! If you have to use a computer, it may as well be fun

Conky was probably designed 15 years ago :)

Glad you enjoy the distro!

Admittedly that hardware is manageable.

You just know MX will use that 16GB of ram the most efficient way possible.

MX Linux . You made a good choice. Mint can fall apart if you try too hard to change it.
