events Fair-Game Fridays!

There are a number of things that people want to post that mods are uncomfortable with in regular circulation … memes, patches, t-shirts, social-media posts, &c. At the same time, there's definitely interest around them.

We're introducing "Fair-Game Fridays": on fridays, mods will loosen our belts a bit. :)

Note that the following are still going to be hard-disallowed:

  • video memes/content (instagram, tiktok, &c.)
  • non-gun content (knives, airsoft, &c.)
  • broader political discussion
  • calls for armed insurrection, violence, &c.

We reserve the "right" to use our discretion for any post, as well.

Have at it!

guns Some Recent Builds

Last year I began to shift my focus from OEM guns and got into 3D printed versions. After many rolls and man hours spent dialing in my printer, I finally feel confident enough to share some builds outside of the 3D2A sub.

It’s been a fun year, and I’m hoping that maybe this will encourage some of you to come and join us over there. There’s a lot of amazing designs out there, and the more I’ve printed, the more I’ve come to realize just how endless the intersection of these two hobbies is.

The designs range from the loud and ridiculous, to more oem+ classic designs, some of which are indistinguishable from your lgs.

Want a new grip for your AR, but the style/color you want is out of stock? Print it and it’s done in hours. Don’t want to spend the money on a new handguard? Check. Or start from scratch and print damn near all of it.

My first pistol, which I bought maybe half a year ago, was a Ruger Security-9. It was... OK, but I wasn't wild about it. In the meantime, I kept seeing posts about this gun, so I finally bit the bullet (so to speak) and traded the Sec-9 in for one. Went to the range today, ran about a hundred rounds through it, and knew that I'd made the right decision. This is a quickie photo that I just did, and the colors are off--the top is black and the lower is that bluish-grey that seems to be the default. Next step is to put on the Viper red dot that I was going to put on the Sec-9 and maybe look at some lights. So, is there a secret handshake or what? More seriously, have people had good luck with the Magpul magazines generally, or is it really necessary to get some genuine Glock mags?

discussion If you're a new owner, I recommend getting your heavy metal tests done

You might think that you don't need to worry about it yet, since you just started out. But if you get a test done now, then you know your baseline. It will not be zero % heavy metal in your blood because you live in this world and heavy metal is everywhere. But if you're lucky, it's less than 1 mcg/dL to start with.

This way when you have been shooting for a while and you think to get it checked you will know whether any of your levels have climbed since you started. If you're lucky, your provider has a handy patient portal which can show you trends of test results over time.

(I was surprised to find I had more cadmium than expected. I blame art school and the paints I used)

Just remember, one possible side effect of lead poisoning is that you become more right-wing.

Picked myself up a 4.5 inch Springfield Echelon a few weeks ago for my birthday and I love it so far. I wanted to get the version with the comped slide, but I waited around forever for it to be in stock and just got impatient and went with this version. I don't really regret it since the recoil isn't all that gnarly where I feel it even needs it. It was part of the Gearpac setup and came with the Viridian optic attached, 4 mags, and a range bag with some other goodies stuffed inside. All in all, after 3 weeks and about 500 rounds, I absolutely love it.

question Labor Day Sales? Bodyguard 2.0

Post image
85 Upvotes

I'm looking to pick up a Bodyguard 2.0 non-comp. I see it $399 pretty much everywhere. I bought my first firearm in February of this year (Canik MC9), so gun prices have never really been on my radar.

Should I try and wait for a sale? or is this a pretty popular model, unlikely to be discounted?

guns Best Home Defense Guns for Novice Gun Owners and/or Women

I’m 27 y/o woman who has only shot a shotgun ever in her life. I’m living alone again and am wanting to purchase a gun after someone attempted to break in. I own a coonhound/treeing walker hound dog and she scared them off that night but God forbid it happens again and she doesn’t scare them off I’m looking for a gun that would protect me. I plan to practice at a gun range with family members/friends that own guns to feel comfortable with one. However, I would still LOVE suggestions on what kind to purchase because I keep getting different suggestions…. I live in West Virginia, not sure the gun laws here, but wanted to mention it in case the laws here would influence the type of guns y’all would suggest!!!

Marlin Dark 336 in 30-30 with a sandman x. Do yall think this is safe or too close and risks a baffle strike? I had a gun smith put it on, he said a direct thread would work better.

training First time shooting

This week, my daughter (sixth grader) had her first firearms class. She took her first shots with a 10/22. I learned how to shoot when I was about her age, and I thought it was a good time to get her started. I wanted a real instructor to introduce her to the proper process and terms, so I connected with someone through the Liberal Gun Club. I decided to join her for the training as a refresher.

It was a great experience for us both. She locked into the procedures well. She was a bit tense at first, but relaxed after a few shots.

I just hoped for her to get a bit comfortable shooting and to learn the safety procedures. I didn't know if she'd be able to hit any targets the first time out, but she consistently put shots into a 2-inch target at 25 yards. Far better than I expected!

Very cool to see her pick up a new skill. Instructor was 10/10.

discussion Enclosed Red Dot Problems

Post image
54 Upvotes

I did a couple of indoor training sessions these last few weeks and I had something happen to me two weeks in a row that hasn’t happened in the last two years of training with this red dot. I drew to begin shooting a stage, and over my shoulder was a bright LED light. That light put a glare on my back glass so bad that I couldn’t even see through it. I couldn’t see my dot AND I couldn’t see my front sight post to switch to the irons. My instructor told me that for that exact reason they like open emitter red dots. The front glass on those is under an overhang and therefore it gets shaded from bright lights. It for sure got me thinking about what if it’s early in the morning or late in the afternoon and I draw my gun with the sun at my back? I genuinely don’t think I will be able to shoot responsibly. It’s a niche scenario, but could happen. The dot in an O-sight SE green. I’ve loved it. It has out performed another dot I have that was 3x the price, but now I’m thinking I want to find something open emitter and with auto adjustment on the brightness. Suggestions?

discussion if springfield expanded the echelon lineup would you buy in?

i keep thinking about an echelon in .45 or a slimline .380 version. i think i’d probably buy both.

i’m a smith & wesson guy mostly but i do have an echelon 4.0c & it’s so good.

what would you want first if they expanded the echelon lineup to other calibers?

discussion Looking for another shotgun

Post image
17 Upvotes

I currently own a Stevens 320 I got used for 100 bucks a few years ago. It’s been a good gun but I want a shotgun I can add chokes to for hunting and shooting clay pigeons. The Stevens isn’t able to accept any. I think I’m narrowed down to a Mossberg 500 and a Benelli Nova 3. They’re about the same price at academy. I’m kinda leaning towards the benelli since its reviews talk about being better built than a Mossberg. But I know the 500 will have more aftermarket support.

question Who to Watch

Who are some good YouTubers to watch (in relation to gun content of course)? I don’t feel like giving viewership/money to the wrong crowd.

I like to watch Hickok45 because he’s mostly unbiased. Other than that, I don’t know who else to watch.

discussion Forced reset triggers, super safeties and bump stocks might be banned federally because of idiots

Now that forced reset triggers/super safeties are starting to become more mainstream, I've seen a lot of videos of people shooting guns with forced reset triggers in irresponsible and dangerous manners. I've seen poor recoil control that can lead to the floors, walls and ceilings of indoor ranges being shot, and for outdoor ranges, shooting over berms. It could be intentionally bad shooting form like shooting an AR pistol or AK Draco pistol one handed, or an unintentionally bad shooting form that can literally knock them off their feet or make them start back pedaling. This could be compounded by people who also don't put a brace or even any sights at all onto the AR pistols that they're blasting with reckless abandon.

I'm kind of surprised gun control groups like Everytown aren't trying to ban FRT's with the same zeal that they go after AR-15's with.

For prime examples of what I'm talking about, go visit r/Idiotswithguns
