Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

About me: I'm a very creative person (Art, fashion design etc.) and a huge nerd when it comes to mathematics, medicine, science and philosophy! Besides that, I'm also interested in law, writing, religion and computer science. In my freetime I love to read books, watch my favourite YouTubers and joke around with my friends. Offering Korean Offering: Korean (Native) | Seeking: English

Hi! I'm a Korean woman in my late 30s, and I'm looking for someone to practice English and Korean with.

I used to be comfortable with simple English conversations, but I haven't used English much for a long time while raising my child, so I'm pretty rusty now and tend to use only simple expressions. I'd really like to improve my speaking again.

Because of that, I think it would be easier and more enjoyable if you can already speak some Korean rather than being a complete beginner.

I used to work in the cosmetics industry, so I especially enjoy talking about Korean beauty and skincare. I'd also be happy to chat about Korean culture, travel, everyday life, or K-dramas.

I'd love to have a casual one-hour Zoom call, half in English and half in Korean.

Feel free to message me if you're interested! :)

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: English, Spanish | Seeking: French

Upvotes

Hello!

I'm looking to exchange with a native-level French speaker. I'm a native English speaker who's lived in the Spanish-speaking world for 10 years, so I can offer both.

Interests? Plenty, but let's say running and reading nerdy books are among my favorites.

Preferred mediums? Calls, of course, offer the most spontaneous practice, but Whatsapp messages (especially voice) are fabulous, too.

I'm currently tickling C1 in French, not quite there yet, but I'm comfortably conversational across topics.

Offering English Seeking: Russian Offering: English (Europe area)

As title says I'm looking for friends who speak Russian, I'm 22, male, I work internationally and currently I'm residing throughout Europe, to give you a good idea of my timesone. I'm American so I speak English and I'm pretty good at Spanish as that's my family background.

I enjoy foreign languages as I am currently learning Russian, I like drinking a lot of tea and trying to cook many different foods from many different countries, speaking of all over the world I travel a lot I've been to almost every continent and I love animals like monkeys, raccoons, red pandas and my favorite animal is the cat ofc.

I really enjoy the gym but I mostly do a lot of running and hiking outdoors because Germany has a lot of beautiful trails, sometimes I like to stay at home and play games on steam (would be happy to add some of y'all and play some day)

Music is also a big part of my life, my mom introduced me to basically all of my favorite artists that I still listen to this day, I'm from Chicago Illinois.

I really don't let conversations die when I'm close to someone, I don't ghost people, if I don't want to talk I'm upfront about it and I very rarely don't want to talk at all so it'd be cool to make some friends here.

Offering Portuguese Offering: Portuguese 🇧🇷(&friendship), Seeking: English, French

Hey guys, I'm Letícia (23y) and i think I can say I'm good at english, although my listening is good and reading too, I really need to improve my speaking, and writing, I get nervous talking out loud but I want to be able to do it more naturally. I want someone that I can talk about everything, ideas, hobbies, movies, so I can expand my vocabulary, and if there's a way to also talk by calls or something like that, it would be awesome!

And about my french I know very few words, I can understand a bit but it's hard for me to talk, I would appreciate someone with patience haha.

I like books, movies, comedy and sci-fi mostly, to try new hobbies and to discover new things, if you want to share more of your culture i'd really enjoy it!
