Learning EMI

Hi all! I am looking to learn more about EMI Shielding and EMI itself. Does anybody have any recs for articles or textbooks to dig into to get a better understanding? If it matters, I work in the Aerospace field so this would directly apply to components in aircraft.

Ritchley, Ott, Johnson are the authors to go for if you want the basics, then hit the standards for your industry for the targets to meet.

Electromagnetic Compatibility Engineering by Henry Ott is pretty good.

RTCA DO-160 defines the specific threats and test methods for commercial aerospace vehicles. MIL-STD-461 and -464 have similar standards and test methods for military aerospace vehicles.

These standards do not tell you how to define your equipment, but they define the threats that your design must not emit, nor be susceptible to.

One does not learn EMI. One becomes EMI.

But in all honesty, the only book that’s going to help you, if any can, is Noise Reduction Techniques in Electronic Systems by Henry W. Ott. Old school.

Honestly - I would first go to vendors of specific sheilding thst you are looking at - most of them will have application notes, white papers, etc.... that are going to focused on application rather than theory. Theory is good but there is still a gap the size of the grand canyon between theory and application. Standards and legal reqs are also good because those are requirements - things like cispr 25 (I did way more auto - I know cispr 25 explicitly does not include aerospace I think that is RTCA DO-160).

The vendors want to sell product. The vendors also don't want bad shit happening due to improper use of their product that they could reasonably prevent. There is a legitimate need for them to provide some resources- Laird Technologies is a shielding vendor that has a ton of resources on their site. If you want to go deeper to the circuits that generate the noise and mitigation techniques every semiconductor company has articles directly talking about EMI mitigation and expectations (literally I was an apps engineer and 50%+ of my support was dedicated to EMI/EMC issues on communication busses - its a big deal with a ton of resources) - they sometimes will pair it with a specific end equipment but a lot of the time it may be just IC specific (i.e. increasing EMC for ethernet ICs etc....) . In my personal opinion I have learned more from vendor app notes/white papers then I ever did from one of my academia based EM / EMC classes in college (I had the Ott book for EMC too and its good - but imo not my favorite).

But ymmv and they are all good places deoending on how you learn best imo.
