Question CIVIL ENGINEERING RESUME TEMPLATE

Hi everyone, I am just seeking some advice from any engineering students at Carleton about landing coops/internships. Any tips if you are outside of the coop program and if it was difficult for you to land roles? Did Fswep help out a lot? Just want to know what worked for you to make your journey successful or if you had any regrets you wish you did?

I know that for comp sci everyone uses the jake's template formula but I'm curious about eng students and civil eng in particular what is the preffered resume template or if it is the same as jake's resume?

Please let me know :) Seeking advice for a friend!

Question Can I change my first year engineering course sections?

Hey!
So for first year engineering, if you are assigned specific sections for ECOR 10XX courses but the assigned sections do not suit your schedule, are you allowed to switch to a different section?
Should I submit an override request to switch sections, or is there another process for this?

Question How much should I rely on the textbook for these courses? (Carleton Engineering)

I'm a student who learns best from textbooks rather than lecture notes, Im trying to figure out which of my courses I should primarily learn from textbook, verses where I should prioritize lectures/ tutorials.

These are the courses I’m taking this semester:

  • BIOL 1103 – Foundations of Biology I
  • CIVE 2200 – Mechanics of Solids I
  • MAAE 2300 – Fluid Mechanics I
  • MAAE 2400 - Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer
  • MATH 1005 – Differential Equations and Series for Engineering and Physics

For anyone whos taken these courses which ones are more textbook-heavy, and for which ones would you recommend prioritizing lectures, tutorials, or given practice problems instead?

Other Looking for hockey players and goalies for early Friday morning games

Pickup hockey players and goalies wanted. Early Friday morning. Games 7 and 8 am starts. Various rinks. Adult league. 18+. Co-Ed. Friendly non contact fun. Zero tolerance for rough play.

Intermediate to advanced players welcome. This league would be too fast for true beginner players.

20$ per game.

Goalies play for free. No commitment. Play as many or as little as you want. Different rinks and times depending on where I can book ice. 3-4 games per week.

Come give us a try. We are using BenchApp for our team communication & scheduling. Join our team using this code: https://www.benchapp.com/join/team/CDPC04

Question Looking for advice from current students/alumni

Hi everyone!

I recently graduated with a B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering from SRMIST, Chennai, India, with an overall CGPA of 7.44/10.

I'm planning to pursue my Master's in Canada and I'm currently considering:

  • Carleton University – Ottawa
  • Concordia University – Montreal

I'm looking at both M.Eng. and MASc. programs in Aerospace Engineering.

My main areas of interest are:

  • Aeronautical Propulsion / Gas Turbines
  • Aircraft Systems
  • Preliminary / Conceptual Aircraft Design

I'd really appreciate some honest advice from current students, alumni, or people working in the Canadian aerospace industry.

Carleton vs Concordia

If you had to choose between the two today, which one would you pick for Aerospace Engineering and why?

I'm particularly interested in:

  • Quality of aerospace courses and professors
  • Labs, projects and practical exposure
  • Research opportunities
  • Connections with the aerospace industry
  • Internship/co-op opportunities
  • Career outcomes after graduation

M.Eng vs MASc

This is probably my biggest dilemma.

If my goal is to work in the aerospace industry after graduation, especially in propulsion, aircraft systems or aircraft design:

  • Would you recommend M.Eng. or MASc.?
  • How different are the career opportunities?
  • Is MASc worth it if I'm not sure about doing a PhD?
  • How difficult is it to get a MASc supervisor?
  • How much funding can MASc students realistically expect?
  • Are M.Eng. students able to get internships/RA/TA opportunities?

Aerospace jobs in Canada

For international students, how difficult is it actually to get an aerospace job after graduation?

I'd especially love to hear from anyone working in areas like:

  • Propulsion / Gas Turbines
  • Aircraft Systems
  • Aircraft Design
  • CFD / Simulation
  • Aerospace R&D

How important are internships and Canadian work experience?

And realistically, how competitive is it to get into companies such as Bombardier, Pratt & Whitney Canada, CAE, Airbus, etc.?

Ottawa vs Montreal

For someone coming from India:

  • Which city is better for aerospace opportunities?
  • Which is more affordable?
  • Which has better student life?
  • Can you comfortably live without a car?
  • How good/reliable is public transportation?
  • How difficult is the winter?
  • How easy is it to find accommodation?
  • What is a realistic monthly budget?

One specific concern about Montreal:

How important is French for getting internships/jobs in the aerospace industry?

Would you recommend Montreal to someone who currently doesn't speak French?

Accommodation & student life

For current students:

  • Is university residence worth the cost?
  • Is it better to live near campus or farther away and save money?
  • Which neighborhoods would you recommend?
  • What is the typical rent for a room in a shared apartment?
  • How easy is it to find roommates?
  • What is student life actually like?
  • Is it easy to make friends as an international student?
  • Is there a good Indian/South Asian student community?
  • How is the food situation? 😅 Are Indian groceries/restaurants easily accessible?

Academics

A few practical questions:

  • How strict is attendance?
  • Are lectures recorded?
  • How many hours per week do you realistically spend on coursework?
  • Is it manageable to work part-time alongside the Master's?
  • How accessible are professors?
  • How much group/project work is involved?

Finally...

I'd really appreciate answers to these three questions from anyone who has been through this:

1. If you were in my position, would you choose Carleton or Concordia?

2. Would you choose M.Eng. or MASc. for an aerospace industry career?

3. What is one thing you wish you knew before moving to Canada for your Master's?

I'm especially interested in hearing from Indian/international students who have gone through either program, but everyone's perspective is welcome.

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Question Missed the deadline to submit my photo for my campus card, what do I do??

My university starts in a week and I missed the deadline to submit my photo for my campus card.

I was away on vacation and unfortunately didn’t have access to my university Microsoft Outlook account on my phone while I was away, so I didn't get to submit a photo of myself. I’m back now and obviously the deadline has passed.

What do I do now? I’m stressing because I obviously need my student ID. I don't have a Presto card for the bus yet, for one. Is there usually a way to submit the photo after the deadline and get my card in time?

Other Looking for a violin player for a recording session

Posting for my stepdaughter, she's studying at The Audio Recording Academy (TARA) at Raven Street Studios, and finishing her course soon. The final project is to produce a song, she's chosen Limn by an artist called Isobel, contacted the artist, got permission to use the song for her project(she even sent over the isolated instrument tracks), and has recorded most of the parts already. She had someone to play violin but it's fallen through, and she's scrambling to find someone else.

I told her I'd check here, she doesn't use Reddit. Are there any violin players interested in learning a fairly simple song and doing a session? The session should run 1-2 hours, likely closer to 1, it's a professional, working studio, and would be the perfect way for someone to experience how everything gets done behind the scenes.

I'm just the intermediary, so if you're interested let me know and I'll put you in contact with her to work out the details. Thanks for looking!

Residence Booked Handicapped Room 😭

Booked a handicapped room in Rideau, unknowingly, as there was no mention on the portal.

What should I expect to be different? I'm assuming lowered light switches, closet (hanging rod), sinks(s) and so on.

Is there a chance we get removed from the room, or are we set because the room was released to the general public?

Appreciate if someone has anything I should look out for once I move in. Blessing in disguise maybe?

Residence Late to residence move in slot

Does anyone know how strict the move in slot times are for res? My train is late as hell and I’m pretty sure I’ll only make to campus at the end of my allotted 15 mins. I’m upper year so my card is sorted but idk if i’d have issues with my online check in if i arrive late.

Question Chem 1101 Lab - Class not every week?

This may be a stupid question, but on brightspace it says that students don't perform a lab every week, only the weeks shown in the schedule. Does this mean I only have to go in every 2 weeks? I'm just wondering because on the Carleton timetable it shows up every week and I don't want to accidentally miss something.

If anyone's taken CHEM 1101 before and could explain how it works I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!
