Mod Announcement No more admissions posts

To the many folks posting about admissions: I know it is stressful. I was a transfer who was rejected my first time, and bawled my eyes out when I got accepted the second time. I get it.

The posts however are clogging up the sub and I’m getting dozens of reports every day. You already filed your application and you’ll either get accepted or you won’t. There are admissions subs to talk admissions if you would like. I left a couple of the higher engaged posts if you want to talk there. Use the search feature if you want to find info about admissions. If you’re having trouble deciding between schools this isn’t the place to do it.

If you are waitlisted or accepted and you have issues, call the school and talk to a counselor. It’s the only good answer you’re going to get here for your edge case.

Good luck and I hope you all get accepted but the sub is being clogged up and posts relevant to active students are being drowned out.

Thanks and good luck incoming transfers and freshies!

Discussion Kind of frustrated with registration

I was waitlist #1 for a chem class and I wasn’t allowed in the class because the professor didn’t want to increase the enrollment cap for some reason. But I’m kinda of confused since they reserve seats for first years if we’re not a first year we’re just never allowed to take chem or physics classes? I wasn’t even allowed to enroll I had to get a permission number to waitlist. What if we want to take the classes as pre-reqs but didn’t decide until past our first year? Just basically screw us?

Admissions What stats do you need to get into CS?

Son is applying and wondering what his chances are. Bay Area resident. Also wondering how hard it is to transfer from CS to engineering or vice versa. He is also considering applying engineering as he can't decide between them.

Announcement PSA to men on campus

Hey,

So I was just walking to my car, on my own, as a woman. This guy was like by scouts approached me and kept asking me “what’s your name?” Asked if twice and started following me a little. He said something along the lines of “I didn’t mean to scare you I’m just trying to make friends.” I kept walking and I’m unsure if he stopped following me since i didn’t see his shadow. I stared at a guy coming the other way and he started talking to the guy while I walked away.

I’m not sure if he had weird intentions, because unfortunately thats possible. But as a rule of thumb, please don’t approach a woman like walking alone at night, it can come off as really creepy and generally an uncomfortable situation. I don’t want to assume anything but please understand if someone doesn’t respond to you, let them be.

Thank you to the second guy, I don’t know if it was intentional either but I appreciate you regardless.

But just in general, please women and others, be safe, know that it’s okay to make a scene if need be.

Thats all, thanks

Campus Cal Poly Chose to Host IDF Soldiers on Campus. This should concern you all.

This weekend, our campus was visited by two members of the Israel Defense Forces, who were welcomed by Cal Poly Administration into Baker Science to speak on their experiences perpetuating atrocities in Palestine. You should question and be concerned about the fact that a foreign military responsible for the death of thousands of innocent civilians are allowed to come to campus and spread their propaganda.

On the other hand, student activists are subject to a conveniently restrictive Time, Place, and Manner policy that only serves to infringe upon the rights of students to assemble. At the event, there were 8 cop cars and a drone present before activists arrived. The response from administration is clearly, disproportionately tilted in favor of the IDF members. As such, Cal Poly's policies is enforced selectively.

How you can take action:

(1) Here is an Email you can send to Cal Poly Administration

(2) Sign this Petition in support of divestment from war profiteering

Campus The best bathrooms for putting on makeup?

The UU has that really nice bathroom with the counters & mirrors so it’s great for putting on makeup. Are there any bathrooms similar to that on the other side of campus near Aglish?

Classes/Professors Chem 1120

Has anyone ever had Jay Erker for General Chemistry? I’ve never taken chemistry in high school, and I was wondering if it’s possible for me to succeed in this class. He seems to move at a much faster pace than other chemistry teachers.

YK, one where the water is cold and the filter status isn’t bad. I hope there’s one. 😭

P.S. Stay hydrated everyone!

Transfer Cal Poly SLO or SJSU for Accounting / Business

Im a transfer student and have these two schools set in mind to apply to. I want to eventually work towards becoming a CPA after graduation.

I come from a low-income family so I receive a good amount of financial aid. I live near SJSU so I will be commuting. But my financial aid will cover almost all of my tuition and housing at Cal Poly and SJSU which I am very grateful for. Does anyone have any advice? I’m leaning more towards SJSU to be closer to home but I’m worried recruiters will prioritize a degree from Cal Poly more than SJSU since it is more prestigious.

Discussion Any tips for Bio 1151 w/out taking chem before?

I already feel so lost, I’ve taken hours of notes on every chapter but I am still very confused. Can’t meet with my professor since her office hours conflict with my classes. Any tips for doing well? I am so scared since I don’t know if the tests will be on lectures vs textbook and how detailed it is (I’m a freshman too so idk how it works). I’m hoping to get an A since I’m pre-vet but I’m really struggling since I haven’t taken chem since sophomore year of HS.

(Any other freshman wanna form a study group if you’re reading this?))

Other Best way to find something with the AirTag removed?

I’m wondering if anyone has ever successfully found a lost item that had just its tracking device thrown out. If you did, what happened? How did you succeed in finding it? How long did it take? What would be the best thing I can do if I still really want to have my belongings back? Is there still any hope I can see them at the Lost and Found or anywhere again? Even just one of them?

At the end of the Cal Poly vs Idaho football game on Friday (August 28), I lost a Ziploc gallon-sized freezer bag filled with important and sentimental personal belongings and many of them are infeasible to replace. I have reason to believe a thief grabbed it after I ran onto the field and ran away with it. I was standing in the second row from the back of Section 107 where everyone was shirtless. I left my bag under the bleachers. There’s several pieces of Cal Poly spiritwear (2 green Cal Poly Mustangs T-shirts, a gray Cal Poly baseball cap, a green and gray rally towel from last year, a deflated lime green thunderstick, a pair of old sentimental sunglasses, a portable Miniso power bank, used personal care items (eyedrops for contact lenses, chapstick, hydrocortisone), and a half eaten Mike and Ike’s inside it. Maybe one of it fell out because it was partially open. There was also a green Eddie Bauer hooded fleece jacket outside and next to the bag. Most importantly, though, a gray wired health device with clips that I need to use every day to monitor my heart rate, which I need for health reasons and is prohibitively expensive to replace, was inside it. The bag also had the green lanyard with my keys, keychains, and an AirTag in it shown in the picture. I found it with the AirTag and all the keys and keychains and stuff still there all by itself in a ditch behind the short wooden fence along the bike path between California Blvd and the train tracks like the one in the photo.

Is what I described happened to me below a guarantee that a thief intentionally stole my belongings? Like someone just snuck past security at the end and stole it from behind my back? Maybe it was another person attending the game who left the minute it ended? Is it likely someone who goes to Cal Poly? I found the guy who stood behind me in Section 107 and he said he didn’t know whether my belongings were there or know of anything happening. Why would someone that quickly go up to the top row of the stands, steal a freezer bag with no money or jewelry but just a bunch of used Cal Poly spirit wear and a pair of sunglasses and some random health device (to them) and the other stuff I have, and run away, with absolutely no intention to return anything? Why would they take the entire bag and leave nothing including the half eaten Mike and Ike’s? Does this kind of intentional property theft happen a lot during sports games? What do you think happened? Could there be any recourse in the future? Is there any hope that it or any of its contents will turn up in a lost and found or anywhere given that I found the lanyard and its AirTag like that? Would you recommend I go and check the trash bins, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, a pawnshop, or the homeless in the meantime?

I just really want the bag and its contents back. Even just the HeartMath sensor and the sunglasses and nothing else. My phone or wallet wasn’t in the bag, but everything else was, and those are still personal belongings that mean a lot to me. I would be willing to have them back for a $150 reward. I files a police report with the Cal Poly Police and the SLO Police Department on Friday night. Unfortunately nobody has been able to locate the item but all of the places I can physically go to check for it don’t open until Monday morning. If you have the Ziploc bag or any of its contents, please return it to the Cal Poly Lost and Found or the SLO Police Department Records Counter as soon as possible. If you have seen it, know about it, or were around the shirtless section of the stadium and noticed suspicious activity there right when the game ended, please DM me as soon as possible. Thank you.

Discussion I hate mcgraw hill

I hate mcgraw hill, it feels so lazy to teach with, I don't know if its just a me thing or what but I feel like I learn the material way better when a professor isn't using the mcgraw hill textbook/slides. I try to understand and learn using mcgraw but I just can't wrap my head around it and my grades suffer because of it.
