The guy was undrafted and had yet to even appear in a preseason game. That type of player is not a difference maker for a team like LSU. Especially not at his position. I’m sure he will contribute but he doesn’t move the needle for their expectations.

Wright is absolutely a potential difference maker for LSU, whether he starts or not. He immediately gives LSU four years of veteran leadership and experience, including in the CFP, and he’s plug-and-play as the hybrid H-back/wing/slot that Kiffin wants for his scheme because he just did it for two years at Ole Miss. And he gets exponentially more valuable if LSU makes it to the playoffs, where a single position having experienced and talented depth can easily be the difference between winning or losing.

I think Green is better than Wright and that’s why he’s starting, but Wright actually had more receptions and yards last year than anyone in LSU’s current TE room including Green, and more importantly it’s a super contact-heavy position with frequent injuries. In fact I’m pretty sure Green missed games just this last year with a knee thing. The reason Kiffin pushed so hard to add a contributor to the room is because after Green and Wright, every other TE that he has are JAGs at best and zeroes at worst. Having Wright as insurance is one bad play away from being a potentially huge deal.

No one player is gonna move the needle outside of a QB or dominant defensive player, but several players combined could move a needle. Its also telling LSU is willing to do this considering the controversy they would have predicted, so im guessing they know better than we do. I fucking hate it, but at that level people take calculated risks so clearly they think its worth it

Aren’t these guys who went undrafted? These aren’t even back ups. Sure there are even hall of famers who were UDFA, but as far as I am aware the vast majority don’t ever make it past the practice squad (if even that)… I actually read that even among drafted players only 30% make a 53 man roster, more like 5-10% if you are a late round pick… so if you go undrafted you will likely never be an actual NFL backup.

I am not saying these players cannot be good or even better than your average college player, but they are a big step down from actual NFL 2nd stringers.

Well I didnt make that initial claim of them being backups,, but seeing as no college team has exceeded 15 drafted in a single draft its not ridiculous to think some PS filler would be a successful starter in a college program.

Yeah it’s definitely possible, but it just doesn’t seem worth it for a team like LSU. I would think they could get somebody in the portal or coming out of HS who would be comparable, likely with a higher upside. If this is somewhere like Louisiana Tech then gain seems more worth it (but not really worth it either in the grand schemes).

My theory is that we are so deep into the attention/engagement economy that Kiffin just wants LSU football to be in all the headlines and on everyone’s social media feeds, because otherwise it is a head scratcher to me.

They could definitely be right, but then that doesnt really add up to why LSU would be doing this then. Im no authority on the matter myself but if we try to read between the lines that doesnt make logical sense. Either there is something else going on here behind the scenes or they are wrong.
