I know for a fact, in the 80s we paid players to watch grass grow at UT

I was an olympic sport athlete in college and was getting $40 per dorm room to clean in the summer 30 years ago. I didn't touch some rooms.

I saw Auburn players do that in the 2000s lol

I worked for a credit union in the area and at one point a kid put in a car loan application, and for income they put “xyz Carwash” and their salary was 80k a year. My manager had to have a phone call with that player and explain that we couldn’t accept this

Similarly in Tuscaloosa at the same era (mid 2000s), I was a manager at a restaurant who offered free meals to several players; basically as advertising for us. They’d eat free, customers would see them there and know they eat there, so other customers would be enticed to eat there, etc. You know the drill.

My boss offered free meals to one player and he countered saying he wants free meals for his friends too. My boss said of course, no problem.

Then the player said he also wants $10k like “the other restaurant” is paying him where he also eats for free.

Like, my brother in Christ, we’re going to pretend you didn’t say that and you need to never say out loud that again.

Probably like 10+ years ago, there used to be this Texas A&M guy who was like an absolute expert on grass and always had something to say about different teams' field management or surface quality or whatever

God I miss him. I remember once he was emotionally invested in some kind of controversy and he said like “you can’t blame the grass for not growing in these conditions! It ain’t the grass’ fault.” Dude loves grass

TrimChaser, had to have been almost 13 years ago now. This sub still couldn't fill any of the 80K seaters at that point.

There is an undergraduate "turf science" degree at A&M, FYI.

I was shocked at the amount of money that can be made by becoming a grass expert. But I guess someone has to keep those golf courses perfect.

u/preddevils6 Tennessee • Austin Peay 17h ago

I think a viral tweet is why the McDonald’s bag got traction.

The joke was always about using McDonald's bags but they actually used Chik fil a bags.

Being a college football and NFL fan also means learning everything there is to know about the weather, common injuries and recovery timelines, and the legal system.
