It was a lot more limited scope. That was one guy on one team in one sport. This is dozens of players in a bunch of sports, and football alone has like 4 SEC teams involved expressing interest in signing them.

I also think there's a significant disparity in on-court/on-field impact between a G League washout coming back to college vs an NFL signee coming back. In basketball, you have some elite 18-19 year old players capable of competing against fully developed professional players. You can go to the G League or play overseas straight out of High School. You're not gonna have any lottery picks or all-stars coming back to college. A G League washout simply isn't that good, there's gonna be a lot of college players better than that guy (Alabama's guy wasn't really that good for the few games he played). In comparison, a football player who played 3-4 seasons in college and was good enough to make an NFL camp (even if he eventually got cut) is virtually guaranteed to be a high impact player if he comes back to college.

This. Basketball is kind of a hybrid between the football model (purely college for development) and the baseball/hockey/soccer model (the professional developmental leagues are more important for development). In basketball an American kid can just go abroad for a year or play in the G League and be eligible for the NBA draft, and a ton of players have already done that.

While the idea of an NBA player going back to play college basketball is obviously outrageous and shouldn’t be allowed, a European pro or a G League player is more of a grey area. There isn’t a ton of difference in the NIL era between college basketball and the non-NBA pro leagues, they’re just different paths to get to the NBA where you get paid for being on the team.

College football on the other hand is unique. It’s the only real pathway to the NFL and the guardrails have been well established for decades. An American NFL prospect isn’t going to just opt out of college football and go play professionally in Germany or something and then expect to get drafted. There have been rare NFL players who didn’t play college football but they’re weird edge cases, it’s not common the way it is with basketball. The hard line seems to be that if you sign a contract with an NFL team or get selected in the NFL draft, that’s it, your college career is over. If that line gets crossed here there’s no putting the genie back in the bottle.

I also think that people just care more about football, so the outrage is louder, and there is more money at stake, so the conferences care more about outrage. However, the reasons you listed are part of the reason people care more.

A different example is track and field. NIL is how professional athletics athletes make their money. As soon as NIL became fair game, all of the track and field kids were professional athletes for all basically all intents and purposes. We're seeing a huge push of international athletes joining NCAA schools to get access to the US NIL collectives for contracts and one of the most competitive and consistent competition lineups on the planet, but no one really cares how this influx of de facto pro athletes is affecting the NCAA system because NCAA track and field is a relatively niche sport.

I care a whole lot less about LSU than I ever have before. Why? Because I'm not invested in the players anymore. I don't know who is on my team anymore because they transfer in, spend a year here and get drafted or they transfer out.

There's no sense of connection. The players aren't connected to the fans and I them. This sucks. The SEC shorts video was very demonstrative of this.

There just needs to be a minor NFL league formed and they just pay the school for their "NIL". Let LSU sports go back to normal and let the administration get compensated by the Baton Rouge - saints minor league team to be called the LSU tigers. It sucks, but this is where consumerism has led us.
