News [Dellenger] The SEC, as expected, adopts a ban on professional players returning to college, which also includes basketball.

Watch the ACC one up this with football, basketball and lacrosse next.

Unironically soccer would probably be the third sport for that (and tbh soccer is by far the worst offender with grabbing pros but no one cares)

u/Sarollas Oklahoma • Michigan State 9d ago

Soccer is also a the hardest to set an actual definition for.

Does a player making 30,000 per year in the English 5th division count as professional?

185

u/Irish8Runner Notre Dame Fighting Irish 9d ago

Yes (although most of those teams are semi-pro)

142

u/Sarollas Oklahoma • Michigan State 9d ago

Even that doesn't really make a difference in soccer.

I got paid 2000 for an individual tournament one time, I'm certainly not a god send of anything, but it is common enough in Europe/SA and small payments can jeopardize your NCAA eligibility

I think we should press gang players of your skill level into a team and have you get blown out by top college teams for clickbait college vs. pro youtube videos

(E: Also what did you play? I was a terribly mediocre left back in high school. No pay)

Not in England, vast majority of teams in the National League are professional. And even in the NL North/South its quite a lot of professional teams.

Tennis has to be up there, too. I played at a small D1 and got smoked annually by a school in our conference that had guys rotating in from ATP Challenger Tour with full eligibility.

For real. Ohio State signed a guy a while ago who made a Premier League appearance and was on the bench for a Champions League game

10

u/wolverine237 Michigan • Northwestern 9d ago

Ohio State had multiple players last year who had appeared in Premier League games and nobody cared

I think we need to start caring -- subsidizing the world's athletes when teams could be offering spots to homegrown talent doesn't make much sense.

The difference between soccer and basketball is that US universities are a step down from most European youth teams in that realm. Most of the time, if you haven’t signed a professional contract by the time you’re college age, you probably weren’t going to reach an NBA/NFL equivalent level. Maybe every 1/1000 will get lucky and sign with a League 2 or 1 team and work their up to the big leagues in their mid-20s, but most likely not

32

u/Better-Temporary-146 Clemson Tigers 9d ago

See Vermont’s recent national title.

Team was made of African and European players who weren’t going to advance in domestic soccer leagues, but could come to America and get an education and play

So, is this gonna play out like the Sorsby situation I wonder.

A court eventually compels the conferences to accept former NFL player, said player joins team, other teams boycott playing that team, and said player decides it's not worth the hassle.

66

u/GoBlu323 9d ago

No. The conferences aren’t subject to the same anti-trust issues the ncaa is because conferences aren’t monopolies

Technically speaking, all life on earth is possible because of the sun, so it must be a paternity suit.

Technically speaking there are deepsea creatures that sustain life based on chemical reactions near lava vents far under the ocean. However they do share a common ancestor that all discovered life shares. So maybe at one point they did need sunlight. Idk. Someone with a degree not in digital media feel free to weigh in

Fair point on chemosynthesis, but those vent-dwelling crabs and tube worms still breathe dissolved oxygen from surface photosynthesis. Sun’s still on the birth certificate, it's just paying child support through an offshore trust. 😉

67

u/Sir_Auron Florida Gators • ETSU Buccaneers 9d ago

In fairness to the Euro players, for many of them if they want to play organized basketball beyond the age of 15 or so, it will happen in a "professional" league due to the academy system over there.

8

For a more extreme example, Luka doncic was under contract at Real Madrid when he was 13 years old and played in the euroleague at 16

u/Robbza Huddersfield Hawks 9d ago

To be fair as a European the entire structure of sports development comes from professional sports clubs youth teams. Legally they have to sign work contracts and be paid. Im not a basketball guy so If there are some European countries where this doesn't apply oops.

u/Juggerginge LSU Tigers • Texas Longhorns 9d ago

10

u/WaltSneezy Alabama • Georgia Tech 9d ago

Definitely the silver lining for LSU pushing hard for this that it actually resulted in the conferences making rules against it with legitimate and legal right to do so in their own leagues and not the limp dick NCAA.

Hopefully this means conferences start doing damage control on some things the NCAA can't (which is everything). The problem with that is the conferences have to get over their power conflict to be willing to do anything that doesn't give them an advantage or puts another competitor enormously ahead. To their credit, they're in very fragile positions, even the Big 10 and SEC on being hesitant to make these decisions and rules within their leagues, so it's not like they're being greedy (for the most part)

Does this actually mean anything? Will some random judge end up nullfying this?

No. This is the conferences making rules for their members, this isn’t an anti trust issues since no one conference is a monopoly

I know this isn't a basketball board, but I think that takes LSU down to like 3 players on their MBB roster

Hey you can come pretty close to winning basketball games with just 3 players!

Granted only if one of them is Colin Sexton

RJ Luis even being considered was insane, he went pro after his junior year in 24-25 and was a pro last year

Him being declared eligible was just corruption at its finest

Remember when the SEC made a statement last night, obviously setting the stage for an official rule to be made, and this sub freaked out and preemptively tried to dunk on the SEC?
