Sounds like the rest of the B12 is basically saying

“We can do this the easy way, or the hard way”

200

u/normalfinnesotan Minnesota Golden Gophers Jun 15 '26

Great way to put it. And TTU is saying, at least so far, "let's do it the hard way."

It sounds like they’re asking the court for permission to enforce their rules? Or am I reading this wrong?

249

u/Frosty_Enthusiasm606 UCF Knights • Virginia Tech Hokies Jun 15 '26

Sounds like it. Seems like they don’t trust state courts so filed this complaint in federal court to ensure they can enforce B12 bylaws without question

172

u/zerocoolforschool Oregon Ducks • Portland State Vikings Jun 15 '26

It’s a smart move. Preemptive strike in a court that Tech doesn’t own.

Big 12 is in multiple states, so federal court makes sense.

47

u/deadzip10 Texas A&M Aggies • TCU Horned Frogs Jun 15 '26

That’s basically it. They’re taking the “two can play this game” route and daring Tech to double down again. Basically, they’re setting this up so that even if Sorsby plays thanks to the preliminary injunction they’re going to hammer Tech on the back end when the case gets resolved and the court inevitably decides the other direction. (Keep in mind the court ruling is just a preliminary injunction and the burden on the plaintiff “to show they have a reasonable chance at winning” is a shockingly low bar and the injunction is merely supposed to avoid harm that can’t be undone or resolved with money damages.)

It sounds weird but it’s basically a move to preempt Tech from filing a suit later.

After Paxton’s letter, they know if they do anything that Tech will sue and they’ll to do this in court anyway.

Might as well try and get ahead of it.

74

u/historys_geschichte Wisconsin Badgers Jun 15 '26

You are right, they are asking the federal court to confirm their ability to enforce their own rules. They need to do this, because of Paxton threatening state level action if any rules are enforced against Texas Tech.

It would also be one thing if Tech was in a conference without another Texas state school, but they share the Big 12 with Houston. Feels like a bit of a conflict of interests there.

Its crazy when Tech or Paxton has the law as a threat against the Big 12. You can’t do that!

Guys, Sorsby broke the law. Possibly thousands of times.

He bet as a minor. He transferred funds for others to bet for him. He bet across state lines.

But Tech is willing to play the legal card??

Id say if he broke the law, arrest him and this solves itself while the ncaa fixes its process and policy problems

170

u/Kryzl_ Iowa State Cyclones • Big 12 Jun 15 '26

The issue is that the investigators are having to dot their i’s 1000 times because Sorsby has the best lawyer that money can buy. If there’s even a minor error in their case, Sorsby probably gets off scot free. This means it’s gonna take time and won’t happen until the season ends, at a minimum.

90

u/Crewman_Guy_Fleegman Ohio State Buckeyes Jun 15 '26

The bigger issue is that federal prosecutors don’t care about Sorsby’s level of crime.

If he was manipulating games it would be one thing, but out of state and underage betting are things the feds police by going after the betting houses for mass numbers of cases, they don’t really target individual customers

38

u/Expensive_Team_5072 Syracuse Orange Jun 15 '26

I disagree. Whether it is big $$$ or not, it is public now. John Doe, an architect or accountant that spends $90k is not a big deal. A guy that is a big name doing it automatically is a big deal.

29

u/Crewman_Guy_Fleegman Ohio State Buckeyes Jun 15 '26

I guess they didn't realize that it was only UT that was allowed to threaten the conference.

26

u/GerdinBB Iowa State Cyclones • Missouri Valley Jun 15 '26

Back in the days before power consolidated into the SEC and B1G, UT (and to a lesser extent OU - who had more leverage than UT but just chose not to exercise it) could always threaten - "give us what we want or we'll leave for another conference." UT and OU were the undeniable top dogs brand-wise (on field results validate OU, but not UT as much) and the Big 12 was afraid of losing them, and the SEC or B1G would certainly jump at the chance to add them, so we acquiesced. Now... TTU can threaten the same, but they may find that the only conferences that will have them are much worse landing spots than the Big 12.

14

u/Master-Praline-3453 Nebraska Cornhuskers Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

There was the situation surrounding Texas threatening to leave for the PAC-12 conference, which was more appealing at the time. (This led to the creation of the Longhorn Network.)

I guess the PAC-12 could still be an option for TTU!

7

u/GerdinBB Iowa State Cyclones • Missouri Valley Jun 15 '26

Yeah, back in the day, the Pac-12, ACC, SEC, and B1G were all viable landing options that were at least lateral moves, if not improvements. Now... the ACC would probably be a lateral move. The SEC and B1G would definitely be promotions but they almost certainly don't want TTU, or at least not enough to inconvenience themselves. Everything else is a demotion.

TTU needs to be careful... there's no longer a power 5 they can bounce around. There is a power 2, a power-2 lite, and then G5/independence hell. The game of musical chairs is not as active as it used to be for anyone but top-tier brands.

“If a vote were to occur however,” the complaint says, “some of the potential sanctions the Board could consider under the bylaws include monetary sanctions and/or a ban on competing in the Big 12 Championship Game.”

Looks like expulsion's not on the table

263

u/jcc309 USF Bulls • Notre Dame Fighting Irish Jun 15 '26

Expulsion is the ultimate nuclear bomb with so many wide ranging impacts. It's never really made sense as a first action. Why try the most punitive, non-recoverable action when you can instead try something a lot more measured and see if it accomplishes the desired goal?

73

u/BokehJunkie Arkansas Razorbacks • Team Meteor Jun 15 '26

While I don’t disagree totally, often times people with money and power view “measured” actions as the cost of doing business. That defeats the purpose of punishment as punitive or as a deterrent. When the ones breaking the rules stand to make more money by breaking the rules even after the punishment is levied, why wouldn’t they just do it?

64

u/iwasyourbestfriend Texas Longhorns • Sugar Bowl Jun 15 '26

A ban from the CCG is a pretty big, non-monetary threat as that likely removes any options for a CFP run which is their main goal.

12

u/BeraldGevins Paper Bag • /r/CFB Donor Jun 15 '26

Yeah. Taking away the CCG completely removes their incentive to even play Soresby. Especially if the committee says they won’t put Tech in. Without that autobid tech would have no chance of making it, so why even go to bat for the guy at that point?

26

u/Kitchen-Pass-7493 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Yeah, but in this case at least, presumably the main reason TTU is so intent on defending Sorsby here is to maximize their playoff chances this season. If they’re ineligible for the Big12 title game (and therefore have no avenue to an autobid), I think that would almost completely offset whatever net gain in playoff odds Sorsby gives them. Especially since (assuming they aren’t simply banned from playoff participation outright), the committee will probably be looking for any excuse they can to leave a Sorsby-led TTU out. With their weak schedule, being banned from the Big12 title game might very well mean they’d need to go 12-0 to make the playoff. Meanwhile every team/fanbase they play on the road is going to be super amped to try and knock them out. At that point I’d probably rather take my chances with the back-up QB.

8

u/hitherto_ex Arizona State Sun Devils Jun 15 '26

This exactly. A CCG ban is much easier to defend legally as there’s probably some conference bylaws already on the books that could make them ineligible the moment Sorsby takes a snap in a conference game.

> is concerned that the Red Raiders would "take a spot" from another school in the league championship game "with a player that has acted contrary" to conference values.

There’s the important line - setting up for a CCG ban that would be a de facto playoff ban (unless the committee folds).

Edit: I seem to have forgotten how to format as a quote 🤦🏻‍♂️

27

u/SirMellencamp Alabama Crimson Tide • College Football Playoff Jun 15 '26

Its obv a fun potential situation. TTU banned from the CCG goes undefeated in the regular season.

31

u/Tarmacked USC Trojans • Alabama Crimson Tide Jun 15 '26

I don’t think the committee will toe the line for a gambler either, they’d block TTU

17

u/SirMellencamp Alabama Crimson Tide • College Football Playoff Jun 15 '26

I dont either. TTUs SOS is probably going to be absolutely terrible and they cannot afford to drop one game in order to get an at large spot

Unless Hammonds knee recovery is going piss poor, that would be next level stupid by them. Without the auto bid from the CCG, we’re leaving it up to a subjective committee filled with plenty of AD’s angry at the situation and I wouldn’t blame them for leaving us out at that point

Even one loss and they’re probably not getting in, under that scenario.

Conferences and schools just suing the NCAA to do whatever they want. Players gambling on their own games and still having roster spots. Playoffs changing every few years.

I used to be the guy who would argue CFB was a superior product to the NFL. I still love CFB and will likely always prefer it to the NFL, but I can’t consciously make that argument anymore. The NFL actually has structure, and rules that everybody agrees on and follows. The people who run CFB have got to be the worst in any sport.

50

u/jshokie1 South Carolina • Virginia Tech Jun 15 '26

CFB was a superior product due to its strong regional ties and cultural integration into the parts of the country that historically didn't have the NFL to lean on. Instead, it's become overly spread out and entirely propped up on betting and engagement, rather than the culture that brought all of these fuckheads the money they so desperately want to get more of. Yaaaaaaaaay.

And some of the individualistic nature of things like the wishbone, flexbone, that sort of thing (which is literally the ONLY thing I still like about college football0.

He will burn it all down around him because his ego won't allow him to be wrong. He will literally bankrupt himself and the university to prove he was in the right. He has no backdown or give up. He only knows double down. He will try and buy judges before he gives up. He's the only reason Paxton is involved and will take it all the way to daddy trump while waving large stacks of money to get backing. It's not going to end well for tech or college athletics at this point.

Tbh I was kinda surprised this was a fight Paxton wanted to take on while he’s trying to win a competitive Senate election. Seems like pretty much every fanbase outside of Texas Tech is united on this one, and how much better could a GOP candidate’s margins get in West Texas anyway? Meanwhile, if you’re a moderate suburbanite swing voter in the Texas Triangle who’s a fan of another team, this could end up being one more reason to consider Talarico.
