11

u/DoubleGreat 6h ago

I'm still in the minority thinking he wasn't wrong

11

u/mike_jones2813308004 5h ago

This is a man who went to prison for some shit he didn’t even do in his prime rookie years then got out and is still in the goat conversation to this day.

How the fuck is he gonna make his team better by going to practice?

Seriously. How?

I assume the coach is already telling the players to “play better” so that’s not it. I don’t think he’s coaching either the old heads or the new guys, so… how?

Nah he real af for that. I don’t care what salary he had at the time it wasn’t his responsibility to make the team better any more than his play at game time showed.

14

u/deep_fried_guineapig 3h ago

Hadn't his best friend just died and they were asking him about missing practice? He was like, wtf there's more important shit going on in my life.

6

u/fairak17 2h ago

Yes exactly. They just ran with the sound bite because ignoring the context. Great doc about him, I believe on HBO.

u/clonedhuman 49m ago

yeah, and his team had just been eliminated from playoff contention like right before this interview. AI had stuff going on, and that's why he was talking about 'practice.'

4

u/Catullan 3h ago

I mean, practice isn't just, or even primarily, meant to improve the individual player. It's there to help the team play better together, which is pretty necessary for winning. It's why many international teams can legitimately challenge teams of US superstars - not because they have better players, but because for whatever reason, they gel together better as a team.

But all that's kind of irrelevant, as AI isn't really saying he's too good for practice there, but questioning why all the reporters were asking about was practice, which was a perfectly valid thing to do on his part, since the press were obviously more focused on building a narrative around Iverson's difficult relationship with Larry Brown than they were on actually covering basketball.

3

u/9406725060 4h ago

lol you can chill on the goat glazing. Let him be his own greatness but yeah

30

u/Barley12 2h ago

I mean to be fair they posted in the comments asking about it, they didn't just accept it and move on.

u/PourSomeJuice 36m ago

I mean it's pretty clearly not a sincere question and is instead trying to insinuate that racism is the reason she's having to cover her hair. Which is fair enough considering the original post literally says she was told to cover her hair, plus the history of black people being shamed for their natural hair.

But she was hiding her hair intentionally as part of her outfit reveal. Not because she'd been told to (well technically she had been by her team). And there's not a chance you could get her to comply to that.

u/Sharp-Artist-8466 22m ago

You must have some kind of brain fever to read that post and your take away is they were simply asking about it and not making a statement the way they worded it.

3

u/Tyrionruineditall 2h ago

Yeah, it's crazy to have the personal belief that the autonomy of POC is important and should be protected because many people and institutions continue to believe they have the right to police what POC can wear and do with their hair in the name of being neat

25

u/Doctorthrowaway91 2h ago

63

Never trust a headline that quotes something that isn't a full sentence.

27

u/FIFofNovember 6h ago

people posting this shit should be required to post context or get ban for a week. Know what your posting.

5

u/WhoLoveYouLikeILoveU 6h ago

And videos depicting sensational things happening should be required to be dated in the title if the things recorded are over like a year old. People always do that soft misinfo bit of “Title that looks like recent news/phenomenon” and gets massively upvoted but you gotta check the comments for the context it was years ago.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/denizenKRIM 6h ago

How about: never trust a news headline that’s only a photo with no source to trace back to.

I hate how social media has just trained people to blindly follow an easily manipulated image. It’s wild how it just works.

→ More replies (2)

22

u/Gayfetus 7h ago

It might be an honest mistake. She did answer the question at the press conference by saying "I had to hide my braids", which could be easily misinterpreted! It was only later where she clarified that she was hiding them for a big reveal during the match.

Although, now that this post has gone viral on Reddit, it might be nice if u/Zulumus or the mods could edit in a clarification.

Bleach is one of her favorite animes. She said she's channeling Rukia while wearing her Wimbledon outfit earlier this year:

Her look at the US Open may also be influenced by Bleach, in addition to being an homage to The Answer.

She looks cool as hell, but did she actually play in this, or did she take the skirt part off or something?
