Yes! I remember going home from work with H1N1 in 2010. It hit so fast. I was in bed for over a week and it was nothing but blurry memories of pain, fever, nausea, sweating and shaking. I was alone with my dog and every time I woke, he was right beside me. I still have no idea how he didn't have an accident on the floor, I didn't have the strength to even let him outside for days in a row. Just in and out of consciousness.
It's unbelievable how fast it came on! We were having a friendsgiving and I felt perfectly fine. Welcomed guests, finished cooking, sat down to eat...and all of a sudden I was freezing, shaking, and could hardly keep my eyes open. Had to bid everyone a good night, leave the cleaning to my husband, and go straight to bed.
I was off work for I think two and a half or three weeks. After a while it was this bizarre state where I felt perfectly fine lying down but if I tried to stand up I got super dizzy. After two weeks I decided to try to push it and go back to work (it was an office job but there was no way to wfh). I got halfway and almost passed out on the train. Had to sit in the station for a while, collect myself, and head back home for another few days.
That was exactly my experience. I'd manage fine in bed or a recliner, as soon as I got up I felt like I was going to pass out. It lasted for at least 2 months.
SOOOO FAST. I was at the Yankees parade because they won the World Series everything was fine all day, then on the train home I started shivering and was overwhelmed with exhaustion by the time I got home (1 hour train ride) I was absolutely freezing, shaking and just so sick. Then the violent cough started and I was dying for like a week? Maybe longer I don’t even remember it was HELL.
I might change your wording a bit... It wasn't as bad FOR YOU. As someone who had both, COVID almost killed me. It also killed hundreds of thousands of people.
Yeah I was feeling kind of shitty at work, but I finished my shift, and went home to bed. I woke up in the middle of the night delirious, sweating, chills, aching, puking.
I missed two days of work without knowing. One of my coworkers came to do a wellness check. I didn’t even know how long I’d been in and out. It was just a haze. It took me probably 10 days to be well enough to leave the house, and I was exhausted for a good month after.
Same. Felt a little funky going to a Halloween party, passed out and woke up like 30 hours later legitimately wondering if I was dead, or nearly there.
Same re: Covid. Got two years ago after I don’t know how many vaccinations. Just felt like shitty flu.
I had H1N1 around the same time, it took months to recover. I burned through my sick leave and ended up going on FMLA. I'm thankful that my employer didn't just fire me. I was moving apartments in the middle of it, my now wife helped me through that, had to pay for movers for the furniture. It was brutal.
First round of COVID in January 2020 was its own kind of hell but I recovered mostly in a couple of weeks, aside from the lingering fatigue and depression.
Yeah what the hell was with the depression? Like my brain had swollen up inside my skull and everything just pissed me off. For months. What a shit virus.
It happens to me every time I get covid. I'll be a week into a really bad, dark stretch when I remember that I'm still recovering. Takes about a month to get back to baseline for me.
Every virus for me now. I swear it did something untoward to my brain the first time. At least I'm aware of it now, but my tolerance for frustration just bottoms out and I feel like I can't handle my life for a few weeks.
Same for me, it almost killed me, was bedridden in the hospital for around 2 weeks and I started having seizures because of it (because of the H1N1). Not fun at all.
Caught it too in 2009. My fever reached 105. I was super bored bc I was home from school for like a week and ended up making a misheard lyrics video with MS Paint LMAOOO.
I got H1N1 when I was like 8 and genuinely don't remember much, although I had an out of body experience and that is the reason I strongly believe the soul is seperate from the body. Was out if school for over 2 weeks.
Same! I had a near 106 degree temperature. Was so delirious. Dreamed I gave my eulogy at my funeral. Was in college and my mom had to drive the few hours out to get me and “quarantine” me at home. There was talk in our dorm of “did you hear someone had H1N1?” Yeah that someone was me.
I was only six and i swear i've never been as miserable in my life. I never got covid though so i can't compare. I've had the flu twice ever since and it was nothing compared to H1N1
That shit was so bad. I was also in bed for a week, got severe dehydration, went to the ER, they scolded me for not coming in days earlier. Got loaded up with fluids and I don't remember the meds they sent me home with but I was thankful I didn't have to stay there.
I've never tested positive for COVID but I'm sure I've had it. Nothing I've had has ever compared to how bad swine flu got me.
The only time I have ever thought JESUS TAKE ME FUCKING HOME. The throat pain was worse than strep and I've had some bad strep before. I was crying breathing was so painful and then sometime throwing up. Dear God. I'd wake up because breathing became so painful from my throat and being that sick, all you want to do is sleep to escape the fever and pain.
Also the only time I have ever just.... Shit myself. I got up to go vomit and stood up and my asshole went- bye! And dropped a full turd. I was so shocked the vomit urge went down and I made it to the bathroom to clean that out to then have to turn around and vomit in the shower next to me. Absolutely not.
Covid was better but still sucked. I didn't shit myself so it was a ranked a lot lower down.
Omg I was in college and my friends dumped me at the nurses door. She knew what it was and told me I had 1 hour to leave campus or they would have me removed. I was locked out of all buildings and my mom essentially had to scrape me off of the pavement to take me home. What a nightmare.
Wow I am thankful I had a mild case of Swine Flu. I figured out something was wrong when I almost passed out and spent the next day or so sleeping and alternatively throwing the covers on and and off as I went from chills to sweating.
Now all these years later I'm wondering if it wasn't worse because where I worked required us taking preventative tamiflu for weeks because the outbreak was so bad. I got it at the tail end of it.

I was a super healthy teenager and I was so debilitated I had to crawl. It was AWFUL.
I'd rather do norovirus, the flu, COVID, or abdominal surgery over again than H1N1.
Same. H1N1 was brutal. I barely had enough strength to drive to my mom’s house when I felt it coming on and was out, just asleep for about 10 days. I don’t remember anything. She called in sick to work for me and eventually after a week they wanted a doctors note and she was like - yeah, as soon as she’s well enough to see a doctor we’ll get that to you. Day 14 I was sweating and shivering in a walk in clinic, drove the note in in my pajamas and went back home to rest.
Covid was like a weird sinus taste and mild cough and ordering food to the door but being mostly bored. I did end up with long covid though.
Same! I literally thought I was going to die when I had H1N1 in 2009. Just awful. And I was young, in my 30s. I can't imagine an older person surviving that.
This for me too. I was at my mom's place for Thanksgiving and I just went upstairs and slept in her bed the whole time because I was feeling like shit. The following few days I could not get out of bed, couldn't swallow saliva because it hurt too much, head felt like it was being smashed by a concrete block, and I essentially overdosed myself on Nyquil to the point where I was hallucinating. I also had my period. Iost like 8 pounds though so that was nice!
I got H1N1 a week after all the students came back from their spring break trips in college. I remember going to my calculus lecture and observing that the girl that sat next to me looked like she was about to pass out or die in her seat. Not coughing/sneezing/leaking or anything but just looked like hell. Get up to leave at the end of the lecture and she's just staring blankly while very slowly packing her stuff up. "Man, I hope whatever she has isn't contagious." Well...
Started having symptoms all of a day later. That shit put me down for like 3-4 days then gave me the worst sinus congestion of my life.
Duuude I had H1N1. I coughed up something that looked like a brain, then hallucinated I was dead.
Took COVID real fucking seriously when it happened because of that. I'd already been through a shitty pandemic virus. Covid is quite bad, and the weird effect it had on my mental state was difficult. But swine flu properly felt like it was going to kill me, and I was 12 years younger.
I remember me neighbour hearing my coughing and coming to check, and me having to hold a sign up to the window that said "H1N1 don't come in"
