Hey if it makes you feel better/validated, I’m an ER triage nurse and pancreatitis is one of the things we can tell you have before you sign in. The level of pain is so evident and unmistakable. It’s really the only pain related complaint that cuts the line if there’s a wait
The hospital thought I was a drug addict seeking meds when I came in with pancreatitis because I was begging for pain killers. Made me pee in a cup while a nurse had her face between my knees watching me pee.
It was humiliating. I got yelled at for "keeping the others awake" due to moaning from pain and slapped for not sitting still.
I got to cut the line at an ER once because I had a corneal laceration. I was curled up in a little ball on my waiting room chair, whimpering and resisting driving the pen they gave me through my skull. Corneal pain lets you cut the line too! Yay!
This! I had it and went to the ER. They took my blood and urine, had me sit in the waiting room for a little bit. Once it came back they immediately took me back and told me I was getting admitted. Lipase over 3000. (My urine was also a dark tea color)
I sure didn’t wait when I went to the ER with acute pancreatitis. I could barely talk to the nurse because I was vomiting NON STOP. Taken back immediately.
I was treated so well at the ED and I didn’t wait, and within 10 minutes I saw a doctor and started the IV, 20 minutes until I got a CT scan. Those hospital barf bags are awesome. But yeah, Christmas Eve and day 2023. And my terrible family didn’t even come visit. Another story for another day;
It’s listed as a potential side effect, but Christmas Eve 2023, I started to throw up uncontrollably. My midsection hurt so badly. I had thrown up all over my room and the only thing that tasted good and would stay down is McDonald’s coke. I doordashed it 5-6 times that night. I had nausea at the beginning with Wegovy, but my PCP prescribed zofran and it helped a little. I finally thought I could drive long enough to get to the ED and not vomit at 5am on Christmas morning. I am so blessed that there are two hospitals less than 10 minutes away. They took me in right away and I got shots of zofran and dilaudid and I was in the hospital 4 days. I lost 60 pounds on Wegovy and I was so happy about finally finding something that helped me lose weight. I made it to the second to highest dose before my digestive system was like “nope.” I’m so envious of those who it works for. But yeah, this was Christmas Eve 2023.
I had pancreatitis eleven separate times due to alcoholism. My A1C was 14 when I was diagnosed in the icu as type 2 diabetic induced by alcohol. That pain is haunting to remember.
Pancreatitis for me as well but not from a glp-1. I would love to try a glp-1 for weight loss but it was an instant no for me when I saw pancreatitis as a possible side effect.
Did you have your gallbladder removed? Pancreatitis is a side effect from GLPs due to the weight loss. Weightloss can cause gallstones, and gallstones can cause pancreatitis. No gallbladder means no gallstones getting lodged in the bile duct triggering pancreas inflammation.
I had pancreatitis as well after my son was born (pregnancy also causes gallstones), and I had my gallbladder removed. My PCP was very supportive of me going on a GLP anyway because without a gallbladder she said my risk of repeated pancreatitis was extremely small (I also don't drink alcohol, and that's the other big risk factor).
Unfortunately you can still develop stones in the bile duct. I got my gallbladder removed in May of 2025 and by September of 2025 I was hospitalized again and had to have an ERCP to remove more stones that formed in the bile duct. I was also told they can return 🫠🫠
pancreatitis from endometriosis lesions is up there for me. in the hospital 3 times for flare ups. about to have surgery on it in december, removing my ovaries since the uterus being removed only gave me 6 months of relief.
I got acute pancreatitis last year due to the steroids I take for my asthma. Got told that was a rare cause. During the hospital stay my asthma flared bad as well that I needed ICU
