Got it as a teenager and it wiped my already measly immune system out and landed me in the hospital.
Around the third week my younger brother was asymptomatic and brought home rotovirus from school, passed it along to me. Landed back in the hospital. I was out of school for over a month.
When I had mono at 15 no one tested me for it and they made me continue going to school. I would pass out in class and they would just call the nurse. Everyone except my mom thought I was faking for attention. I had mono, walking pneumonia, and a UTI that almost became sepsis. No one took me seriously for THREE AND A HALF MONTHS!!!!!
It caused my nervous system to break and now I have multiple lifelong nervous system disorders. All because my doctors egos were too big to actually believe a teenage girl
I remember getting yelled at because I passed out and fell asleep in church when I had mono… they felt bad when they realized I was actually sick a few days later 😂😂
I was so damn exhausted too. I was awake like 20 minutes between hours of sleeping.
I had to wear a mask in the er (thanks covid) and it somehow made me feel even worse. I kept looking between the floor and door trying to figure out if I should lay down or go outside before I collapse.
I’m surprised how far down this one was. My husband caught it while we were on a road trip. 103 fever that advil would bring down but would come raging back, and just pouring sweat. I feel like I washed every towel in our house daily once we got home. He basically just ate ice, slept and poured sweat for 3 weeks.
My husband got the virus at 33, then instead of regular mono, it gave him encephalitis and he was closer to dying than the doctors wanted us to know. Scary shit!
First time I couldn't swallow anything my throat was so swollen. I had it for weeks and kept getting tested for strep. Finally I was sent for a blood draw and lo and behold, mono.
Second time, I work up in so much pain throughout my body and I was freezing. I filled my bathtub with hot water and slept in the tub for relief. Blood draw and yet again and mono.
I did not need to read this... the sickest I've ever been was with mono; over 24 hours of just puking. To put icing on the cake, found out I had mono the same moment I found out I'm highly allergic to amoxcillin.
I also spent 30 days in bed when I had mono. I don’t even remember getting up to go pee and slept 20 hours a day everyday. My skin also developed a horrible rash for weeks because they thought I had strep instead of mono and gave me amoxicillin. Once I came out of it, my skin was peeling off and I had lost 10 pounds. Absolutely horrible virus lol.
I apparently contracted it in early 2020, I was mid 30s at this point. I didn't know until I went to the hospital after I turned Simpson yellow.
At the start I just felt off all the time, this was a couple weeks. Then on a Wednesday at work I was feeling real bad and went home early to avoid getting others sick.
Couldn't keep food down. My urine was dark dark, nearly black, no matter how much water and electrolytes I drank. By Friday morning my eyes were starting to turn a bit yellow. I text my boyfriend about it to see if he could come over and confirm I wasn't crazy. By the time he came by a few hours later I was Simpson yellow all over.
He helped me shower, since it'd been three days due to exhaustion, and took me to the ER. They brought me in immediately and started running tests, got me a bed upstairs, and I was there for 5 days.
The only person that got physically close to me while I was there was the phlebotomist that came in every morning at 5am to draw my blood. Then one day a gastroenterologist comes in very happy and bouncy, gives me a hand shake. Smiling. Huge smile.
Dr: do you have kids?
Me: no
Dr: have you been around kids recently?
Me: on super bowl Sunday (3 weeks ago at this point)
Dr: snapsfinger guns** that's where you contracted mono.
😂 I got released the next day and had several follow-up blood draws. The mono somehow jacked my liver and my bilirubin was in the high teens when it should be below 5.
By the time I wasn't yellow anymore and ready to start working in office again the CEO shut the offices down and we were wfh.
Yes!! My mom thought I was going to die when I had this. And then for like month after the worst passed I still couldn't sit down for more than 5 minutes without passing out. Was soo tired all the time. Like wasnt contagious anymore and still couldn't go to school because I kept falling asleep every time I sat down.
Same. I got it my freshman year of college, and the common spleen pain that it causes was essentially how I learned where the spleen even is in the human body
Mono for me as well. I was sick for about a month in 5th grade. I never really got “better” because it fucked my immune system so badly it triggered by body to developed Type 1 Diabetes (autoimmune response), which I’ve been dealing with for the past 20 years now.
Fucking mono. I remember looking it up when I finally got a diagnosis (first test came back negative. They refered me to an oncologist(!) to investigate my symptoms further. They thought I might have lymphoma or something.) and the article was about why there is no mono vaccine. The summary was that people don't die from it enough and that if you technically get the virus, you have a slightly higher chance of getting chancer or something. Considering so many people already get mono or are immune due to getting it as a young child, it doesn't matter! And think of how much lost productivity happens due to mono. People are getting sick with it for one month or up to six months.
I couldn't convince myself to eat anything. I had no appetite and survived on almost only pistachios for three months. Almost lost my college scholarship due to my poor attendance and classwork. I had all As at midterm but had Cs by finals. Luckily, my doctor wrote a letter explaining the situation to the scholarship board as part of my appeal and I got it back.
It also killed my immune system cuz I got a UTI at the start of it and again at the end of it.
Same. Holy hell that was bad. Took about a month to start getting over it. A friend of mine ended up in the hospital with it. My boss accused me of faking it. All around bad time.
This was mine. Seems easy next to the cancers and severe withdrawals ITT but holy fuck mono sucked. Massive fevers, no ability to hydrate effectively, every thing with your neck and mouth feels like death
and the smell of your throat even if you are gargling just fills the room. Complete sensory discomfort even sight and hearing. Imagining spiders and oddly pennys (like as in Abe Lincoln) crawling up the walls. Almost four weeks of that. The length of the illness may have honestly changed my personality or physiology. I felt like a different person after recovering. I barely remember anything specific from that time besides feebly binge watching Trailer Park Boys while my then GF wore a mask and squeezed ice water onto my head while pouring codeine down my mouth. Set me back an entire semester of college.
i had it when i was about 5 or 6 years old and can still remember how awful i felt. about 15 years later my college roommate had it for several months before they even figured out what it was. she was tested but had such a high count that the test didn’t pick it up or was inconclusive or something. she was sick for like 5 months
I’ve had mono a few times, never as bad as that tho, it’s just a sore throat for me, I haven’t even kissed anyone at all in my life and somehow I get it, it must be airborne where I am.

Mono, 30 days in bed. Didn't matter how much water I drank I was always thirsty. My bedroom stunk like sick.
Edit anecdotally: Our dog would only sleep with my brother, but the entire time I had mono he slept on my pillow by my head.
