I'm a lawyer and always refused to date lawyers too. Recently got into a relationship with another lawyer who also had a "no dating other lawyers" policy. We're even on opposite ends of the same practice area.
It's going amazingly well so far. I still think as a general rule it's a good practice though.

my best friend is a lawyer and his hard dating rule is no lawyers. he says no matter the field, to get through law school and do well in the field, the person's gotta be cut throat. 99% are going to be like that or somehow not good to be in a relationship with.
i used him as my example of "well not every one..." lol, and he said it's just easier to say no lawyers😅

Heavily depends on the field. For many litigation attorneys that's probably true. I work in patent law, and from my experience it's largely a bunch of chill nerds.

I’m a paleontologist. Field work takes me away for months at a time, the museum pay is awful, we’ve had multiple cross country moves… my spouse is a trooper! But the majority of my colleagues are divorced or on their way there.
164
u/stiff_mitten 16h ago
Paelo spouse here: can confirm. It’s not a relationship for the faint of heart. Sooo many divorces and/or solo/single parenting while the other is away.
People ask why I don’t join my partner during field work. I say if I wanted to dig holes I’d get a job in construction - at least I’d get paid more.

Geologist here. Paleontologists often have a geology degree but can take extra specialty and biology classes unless there a specific degree program for them. knew a bunch of serious hard core engineers from a big serious hard core school who made a big serious Thing while in schooland did well from it. But while all that was happening, the school appeared to go out of their way to get them girlfriends. All sorts of social events, all sorts of ways of dangling a bunch of engineers in front of people - "sure they are dorks now with some sort of fucking robot thing, but give them a few years and they'll be rich"
They needed all the help the school could offer.

I’m a woman engineer as well and after dating three engineers… I steer clear of them and go for more creative types. We did have a lot of common geeky interests and can talk intellectually with them, so when it’s fun it’s so fun! However (this part is hard to explain bc it’s so subtle) but no matter how intelligent and high-achieving I am, their ego takes a hit for some reason, esp if I’m earning more or out ranking them. They tendency to peacock their intelligence or push their way over mine was just too common; it’s not a nice feeling when that push back is coming from someone who you believe cares about you :/
Also a common trait in engineering is to be more logic driven, sometimes to the point that the emotional side during hard convos gets neglected so the EQ sometimes isn’t there.
I’m glad your experience is great otherwise but just showing the side of an engineer/engineer pair that could happen
→ More replies (5)53
u/ibeerianhamhock 14h ago edited 6h ago
Unpopular opinion but low EQ engineers aren't very successful. The scale of things we build now are large and collaborative and if you can't understand people, build trust, and communicate effectively, you're probably not going to be a good engineer.

Actors (I say this as a theatre major/former actor)
295
u/No_Frame_9452 18h ago
For those asking why, Trooper's comment nailed it. I love artists and I'm still a musician so I'm guilty of some artist stereotypes myself. But there's a lack of balance in the lives of actors who haven't figured out that they need to be a human being first and actor second.
They can also be very flirtatious (the number of times I've thought a cast mate genuinely liked me only to find I was one of many irons in the fire), the love-bombing I experienced when dating an actor, the competitiveness that can impact the relationship. It's not like I think they're bad people. It can be a toxic industry and I'm just not interested in being around it.
The reasons I wouldn't date an actor are also reasons I don't want to be one anymore.

Anyone who works in film and tv. 12+ hour workdays, lots of travel for long periods of time if they work in narrative, unpredictable schedules, and the gig economy lifestyle can all be really hard on a relationship. Plus so many people in my field worked their whole lives to achieve their one goal of making it in “the industry” and that hyperfocus has led them to frame their whole personality around their job, so even when they’re off the clock all they talk about is work.

I’m dating a psychology trained therapist. Most people in those professions want to turn that part of their brains off at home. And if they can’t they’re usually pretty capable of honest discussions regarding boundaries and the like. They are trained to help others establish boundaries and communicate, they’re pretty good at it. I wouldn’t consider it a deal breaker gig if you’re secure in yourself and willing to communicate.

As a therapist who is married to another therapist, this is accurate. Neither of us tries to "diagnose" the other or engage in much "therapyspeak" for the most part (and we're quick to shut it down if it does happen). And like you said, we're trained in handling emotions and communication in ways that make it easier for us to resolve conflict than the average couple.
Honestly, I think this trope of not wanting to date a therapist/psychiatrist because "they'll constantly try to analyze/diagnose me" says more about that person's insecurities and outdated tropes regarding the profession than it does about the reality.

Thank you for this, I hate when people cite sex work as the oldest profession😭 not to diss sex workers themselves (lots of nuance we don’t have time for here), but this specific misconception often disregards women’s labor throughout history

Yup. So tired of the prostitution propaganda. Midwifery will always be the oldest profession

Not like they'd be interested in me either but...
Actors and/or musicians.
They make a career of being likable and have people throwing themselves at them constantly that even if I trusted them it'd be exhausting to want to go out to eat somewhere and have a gaggle of fans fawning over them.
And if there's even a sliver of doubt there it's over. The better the actor the better they can act... Kinda obvious statement but like "no honey I'd never cheat on you" can be an Oscar worthy act while they are totally cheating on you.

As a musician, it sounds like you mean aspiring, famous, or touring musicians. I doubt you’d need to worry about the nerd who plays at the local jazz club every weekend or in a regular cover band at a beach-themed boomer bar.
But watch out if he’s anything like Duke Silver. That man is irresistible.

Luckily, I am married 😆

Ironically, as a teacher, I only ever wanted to marry another teacher because of the shared holidays and that they would understand what I go through. It’s very hard for non-teachers to relate to the stress and occasional trauma we go through.
My husband and I are both high school teachers. I couldn’t be with an elementary school teacher though 😂 I’m kidding. Mostly.

Anyone in the Military.
That seems like a shitty life to me.

I grew up with both parents in the military. They had their faults, but I loved most aspects. Great schools, lots of friends that understood the life and weird rules, got to see a ton of interesting places and meet interesting people, and got to see a huge amount of European history. Also got to travel to different countries for away games, so that was neat.
The bummer at the time was friends moving away after a few years, but now I meet up them when I travel because we ended up all over the world.

What if I told you that salespeople are actually the BEST choice in a romantic partner. Now you’ve said that anything that’s good enough will sell itself, but I’m here to tell you, that is simply not true! Take Love for example. My love is good enough, but you wouldn’t know it unless I told you. And I am telling you now that my love is THE BEST love out there. Try it for yourself NOW with only a $500 deposit and no commitment. But act fast! Supplies are limited and federal rebates are expiring soon!!

They are forming their opinion based on observations so this lends to a decent hypothesis that we should test. Course we need to write like fifteen different proposals before we get funding...and after expiriment design and removing confounding factors which will take some long days at the office, of course field work is most likely required, possibility of being gone for months at a time. Then there is us writing the paper, debating on who gets what authorship, the submission and the eventual reviewer #2 and the long waits for...you know what I'm beginning to agree with Lazy-Point already...

Academics are either the most chill, laid back people I've ever met, or the most uptight, unfun, neurotic, anxiety driven weirdos. There seems to be no in-between.

Any kind of law enforcement (police, military, corrections). Any kind of politician (including lobbyists).
If they’re legally untouchable they’re ethically unfuckable.

An underrated one is Chef. You'll have this vision in your head of them cooking you gourmet meals every night. That's not remotely how it goes. First of all, they almost always work at night and on weekends since that's when people go to restaurants. At home, they tend to make the most basic crap. The job is super stressful so they're on edge a lot, and there's a ton of drug usage and alcoholism among chefs. You want someone who can cook but doesn't do it for a living.
