Patch for Claude Code Desktop for Linux (beta) aarch64 fixes various issues so it works on Asahi Linux
https://github.com/mercurious/claude-desktop-asahiI really like the Claude Desktop app and one of the first things I did was ask Claude to make it work on Asahi and it's been working great.

You should know the Asahi Linux team and users feel that AI is Slop and is bad. https://asahilinux.org/slop/
"The use of Slop Generators in any contribution to the Asahi Linux project is expressly forbidden. Their use in any material capacity where code, documentation, engineering decisions, etc. are largely created with the “help” of a Slop Generators will be met with a single warning. Subsequent disregard for this policy will be met with an immediate and permanent ban from the Asahi Linux project and all associated spaces."

That's for contributing to the Asahi project itself, nothing in there prevents people from running whatever programs they want on their own computer.

The asahi devs are extremely opinionated about it but that does not make them correct
That said, trusting random people to do a good job with llm generated code is optimistic at best. It certainly makes it easier to put out bad work

u/Kidplayer_666 1d ago
Well yeah, they are opinionated on AI for the Asahi project, but they don’t care what software you choose to run on your machine

u/gburgwardt 1d ago
Yeah it's fair enough to say they won't accept LLM output for Asahi, I don't mean to imply that's wrong. Frankly, I assume it makes it a lot easier to maintain a project if you're not flooded with low effort PRs
I get the impression though, that they're more dogmatic about it. But I'm only a casual observer, so don't trust my word on that.

Yeah, in my experience with LLM's, it's made me more productive since it's been very useful for debugging. It did take time figuring out how to use it right but after only a few months, I am able to make progress faster. It's also extremely useful at researching and annotating things, along with checking documentation to see if something is not up to date or missing.
I've seen far less experienced people use it and it usually ends up being slop.

It's like how there's a ton of terrible AI art, part of it is because AI is just bad at aesthetics, but a lot of it is because people just have really bad standards or bad taste.
A lot of people aren't artists because they never learned how or had the opportunity, but there are also a lot of people that aren't artists because they have no sense of aesthetics and now they can type what they want and get some garbage that they share

u/SpaceboyRoss 1d ago
I would never use AI for art. For programming, it's been extremely useful. I've used it to help me diagnose issues in a CPU I've been designing and it's helped me solve some strange issues that aren't probable in a simulation.
1
u/gburgwardt 1d ago
Yeah I’m just making an easily visible comparison, everyone has seen really bad ai art being used places
5
u/SpaceboyRoss 1d ago
Yeah, I do think it's possible to have less sloppy AI code. It does take work to do it but the results do become better. On the art side, I don't think it'll ever be better than humans because it's got no creativity. But that's where it's good with code. Like you can work with it, do the parts where creativity matters. You enforce things like style with linters, give it rules, and it'll try to follow them. But it's not something that'll ever be better than humans.
But the thing that everyone seems to not realize here is that LLM's have gotten to a particularly interesting point of the bell curve. They're now genuinely useful. In the 14, almost 15 years I've been programming, it's never been this easy to debug code or figure out how to start a project. As a tool, it is extremely beneficial when people who know how to use these tools use them. I don't think that allows for a lot of how the industry does things, corporate tech has basically always been abusive.
It's no surprise my original comment got down voted. People downvote because "all AI is slop" but forget when a lot of commercial software has been slop for 30 years.

I do appreciate your warning and critique. I will respect the boundaries laid forth by the Asahi dev team.

It’s really sad to see. I decided to stop donating because of it..

u/anthonyrossbach 1d ago
Yes, because using something that is fully based on stolen work and is destroying the environment is a great thing that everyone should use. Nahh. F AI.

u/ComprehensiveSwitch 1d ago
a lot of companies say the same thing about reverse engineering, they even go to great lengths to prevent it.

TBH even if it was oss, was based on zero stolen work, was powered by green energy there still wouldn't be a single good argument to use it. Slop is slop.

u/gburgwardt 1d ago
If there was an LLM trained on only permitted work(however you want to define it), entirely run on solar, and output good code, you'd still be opposed? Why?

I wish this political anti transhumanist toxicity wasn’t so popular on Reddit…
2
u/anthonyrossbach 1d ago
Yes being against theft is "political".
-3
u/RealSlyck 1d ago
No, but rambling statements with no evidence are “nonsensical.”
1
u/anthonyrossbach 1d ago
Oh sorry you want links to Evidence of stolen work? Sure!

https://techxplore.com/news/2026-07-publishers-accuse-google-copyrighted-content.html
I can keep going.

u/RealSlyck 1d ago
Yep, find the one where they copied the Transformer paper, then you can stop. Otherwise, yawn.
1
u/anthonyrossbach 1d ago
Ah, so you are one of the content stealers who reshare others work as your own... Got it. I find it funny how all the pro AI people like you only snap back after any actual info is shared with you with text that reads like "your evidence does not count as it hurts my feelings".
1
u/RealSlyck 1d ago
No, it’s called “learning.” Interesting, humans (and all learning machines) tend to copy first, then create. Ever went to school (prolly not, being a bot and all)? That act of teaching, learning, and doing - copying, by a bot’s definition.

u/zarafff69 1d ago
Look, I get why people don’t like AI, everyone has different opinions. But attaching those to an open-source project is quite clearly just politics.
And it’s their project, so they can force their political beliefs onto this project, that’s their right.
But it’s also my right to disagree with them, and stop donating to people who fundamentally have opposing political beliefs. I also wouldn’t give money to Mullvad because of this.

u/anthonyrossbach 1d ago
No, stolen content and generated works is a legal mess that actually can't be licensed in an open source project as the person using it has no legal right to the output in a copywriter sense. So just using it to generate chunks of code makes the licenses invalid. AI is morally, and legally WRONG to use.
6
u/anthonyrossbach 1d ago
Oh gosh more AI slop programs.
-16
u/RealSlyck 1d ago
More slop programs? You need to read the news much more often and touch grass. Claude Code is a solid harness that’s been around for a long time. How’s life under that rock?
1
u/anthonyrossbach 1d ago
AI is based on stolen work, and that fact alone should make it illegal. It's destroying the environment, and has so many flaws and makes so many mistakes people trusting it to do real work is creating massive outages and problems. F AI.
-3
u/ComprehensiveSwitch 1d ago
do you always feel the need to be weird and antisocial about things you don’t like
-8
u/RealSlyck 1d ago
Current AI is based on math and neural networks, chief. Pivotal Transformer architecture by Google in 2017. Used to do vital work everyday in tons of fields all around the world You use broad generalizations that demonstrate your lack of understanding about it, hoss. I encourage you to see what it can do for you, rather than crying this hard about sky-blue and rain-wet (or being a bot). Bot life is hard, huh 🤔

u/anthonyrossbach 1d ago
I know how it freaking works, but guess what, it's trained on fully stolen content without any permissions.
-3
u/RealSlyck 1d ago
So is most of corporate America, and for the most part, people are generally ok and benefit. Could be better, but shared knowledge makes the world go around.
However Mr. Ro Bot, not sure you do understand, because not all of it was trained how you are implying. Again, broad generalizations and “sky is falling.” Neural networks are hard and change is scary, but hang in there!
6
u/F-O-C-A 1d ago
so if someone robs your things, it is ok for someone else to do it because it was stolen before by someone else? are you stupid?

u/RealSlyck 1d ago
No, just realize people are social creatures and a sub that’s good at Linux is really bad at people. And AI.

Cool i guess but who cares bout claude code this is linux😂 some script kiddie may but nice id just use LLM as acrath pad for for jan imlent then rewite in good sane code but oh well

We're locking the comments because this debate is unproductive. We are not in the business of telling you how to use your computer, by all means use Claude Code on your Asahi machine if you want. We will not be using such tools in our work, nor will we be placing any sort of weight into bug reports about this stuff not working or performing poorly either. Our stance on this matter is clear and this is not the place to be debating the merits of LLM use for any purpose.
