Okay Adelaide, here's some critical points of phone etiquette I didn't think you'd need to be told, but apparently you do.

1. Hang up the call before you come into the public/ workplace toilet.

This is not a one-time problem.

Do we really need an all-staff email to tell you to leave the phone in your pocket? To not have mundane social catch-ups while everyone else in the room is in varying stages of relieving themselves?

I don't care who's on the phone. I will go out of my way to make as much toilet noise as possible if you're taking a call so the person on the other end of the line knows how disrespectful you are.

Seriously. What the actual fuck is wrong with you?

1. Put down the email and the social feeds while you're walking on footpaths

It can wait. If you need to check something, stand next to the buildings and take care of it out of the way.

And when you're crossing the street, stop looking at your phone. Have some consideration for everyone else who'll have to witness your gruesome injuries next time you're about to step in front of a car and I'm not there to grab you by the backpack.

South Australia has joined Queensland and the Northern Territory in categorically ruling out involvement in a national gun ‘buyback’, with Premier Peter Malinauskas explicitly confirming the state would not be participating in the scheme.

Responding to an inquiry from One Nation MP Robert Roylance during Question Time on September 1, Mr Malinauskas plainly stated his government would not be signing on to the national firearms ‘buyback’ as championed by the NSW Government.

I'm at the Little library with my 3.5 yr old and it is such a beautiful and fun place!

I just wish parents would make an effort to tidy up after their kids. It's not easy I know, but even if you put away a few of the things your kid pulled out it would help keep the space nice for everyone.

It also helps to teach kids early to appreciate and contribute into the upkeep of public spaces.

I am a cyclist (M61). Cyclists on Australian roads can be a controversial topic, but with some rules, courtesy and basic sense, it would be nice if the heat were turned down a little bit. 

Cyclists on footpaths and shared paths

In SA, cyclists are allowed to ride on footpaths, and the law says we must give way to pedestrians. I have adopted some rules for that, that I use myself.

Ride at a reasonable pace, not flat out. If approaching a pedestrian, slow to a walking place. If approaching from behind, use the bell until they notice and look around (I would like a rubber bulb honky-horn, but that might startle the elderly and other high strung individuals). If the footpath is narrow, stop dead, and let the pedestrian pass, especially elderly people. It there are children, stop dead, and let them pass. If there is a toddler, STOP DEAD, until the tiny random human has safely passed. If you are approaching a blind corner, ride dead-slow and if a pedestrian appears, stop dead. If there is any other kind of risk or uncertainty, stop dead. As a footpath rider, if you are crossing a busy road and picking a gap, dismount, and walk your bike across the road. If you are approaching a busy high street, dismount, and walk your bike. When a pedestrian makes room for you, smile and say thankyou, because I am polite like that. 

Cyclists on roads. 

The first point I would make is that because of the inherent limitations of human attention, it is certain that sometimes a motorist will just not see you. If you try to aggressively assert your road rights as a cyclist (especially on main roads, which are busy and chaotic environments, especially at peak times), that increases the probability of injury and death. Defensive riding is in you own best interests. So, if you can (and you usually can) avoid the main roads and take suburban roads. They are calmer and more enjoyable to ride, and statistically you will live longer. 

On a main road, if I find myself in a traffic situation that I feel is too chaotic to predict, or puts me at risk (like parked cars reducing 2 lanes to one and a half lanes), I will immediately duck onto the footpath, to avoid the confusion. 

Thoughts on rude and stupid cyclists-

There are indeed rude and stupid cyclists. Please do not crowd them or run them down in a road rage. Try just yelling and tooting at them instead. There are some cycling behaviours that I think are rude, like guys in lycra riding $10,000 racing bikes in groups many-abreast, on country roads. That is both really rude, and dangerous. Those guys are idiots. It induces frustration and anger in the motorists who are following them, and anger and frustration make it more likely that the motorists will also do a stupid thing. Try just tooting at them a lot, instead of ploughing through the whole group. Ploughing through the whole group will feel really good for a little while, but you could go to gaol. 

On rude and angry motorists. 

Please do not be that. Your road rage tells me more about your own character, than what it tells me about the stupidity of, and inevitable mistakes made by, cyclists. When you rage at cyclists minding their own business and obeying road rules, maybe you are the problem, not them.

Elaboration: honestly, I'm burnt out. I know the symptoms. As such, my brain doesn't have the capacity to answer this simple question.

Work's a shitshow and has been for a while. Home life is not great at the moment (my partner wants me to do so much on the two days I'm supposed to recover from the shitshow of work).

I just want to get out for a couple of hours by myself, but I'd have no idea what to even do. I don't want to walk up and down Colonnades or Marion, for example.

I should be able to come up with something, but it's literally just blanks.

I moved to Adelaide for uni and it’s been one of the hardest social experiences of my life. I’ve always had friends everywhere I’ve gone, so this has been a real gut check.

Early on I met a group of people who I just didn’t click with, they were closed off and never really wanted to hang out outside of whatever the initial setting was. Around the same time, someone offered to show me around campus. We went to the gym together, she asked me to look around on my own for a bit, I checked with her that it was fine for me to step away for a few minutes, she said yes, and when I came back she’d left without a word.

Since then I’ve tried pretty much everything. Classmates who are happy to chat during class but not interested in hanging out beyond it. Other international students who mostly stick to their own nationality groups. Clubs. Even people from internships. Nothing has really stuck. In my experience here specifically, it’s been much harder to turn a friendly interaction into an actual friendship than anywhere else I’ve lived or travelled.

I’ve also dealt with a fair amount of casual stuff around my accent, people commenting on my English or talking to me like I won’t understand, even though English is my first and strongest language. It’s a small thing each time but it adds up.

One more thing that’s been isolating: a lot of the international students I meet are here specifically because certain degrees are seen as good for PR, and it’s hard to relate when I chose my degree and this whole experience because I actually wanted to study it, not for a visa outcome. I get told a lot that my degree “won’t help with PR,” which misses the point entirely since that was never my goal.

I used to be a high achiever back home. Since coming here, the loneliness has genuinely tanked my grades and I don’t really have a social life to speak of. I don’t fully understand why this particular place has been so much harder than everywhere else.

Genuinely just looking for advice from people who’ve been through something similar, or found ways to build real friendships here. Just want to know if this gets better or if there’s something I’m missing.

Moved here only 6 months ago, so outside of my East Adelaide suburbs, I have still limited knowledge of places.

I have some bloody QLDers visiting this weekend and they wanna watch the Lions finals match. Stupidly AFL scheduled it smack bang in the middle of Sat arvo where I was planning to make a hike with them and show them the hills.

In order to get at least some time out in the hills, we wanna watch the match somewhere in the hills.

Any recommendations for a nice place to watch it that is not just a rundown pokies place?

One Nation’s Health Practitioner National Law (South Australia) (Childhood Gender Dysphoria) Amendment Bill sought to criminalise trans youth healthcare in South Australia.

If successful, it would not only have restricted trans people's access to vital care, but also threatened healthcare providers with up to 5 years jail time for prescribing drugs to minors for the treatment of gender dysphoria. A breakdown of the Bill by SARAA is here.

Yesterday, the Bill was defeated 11 votes to 8 - a much slimmer margin than I'd anticipated. The names of those who voted for or against aren't yet available through Hansard.

Why do so many drivers insist on not slowing down in school zones? I drive through 6 on a daily basis and regardless of whether or not there are students visible I’d estimate the majority of cars do not slow down. This morning I was honked at despite the fact it was 8:30 and there were even kids walking on the footpath. This is not an isolated occurrence as I’ve seen a bunch of very exasperated drivers behind me waving hands around etc.

Regardless of your thoughts on them, they exist. Please don’t be a jerk to those of us who try to do the right thing.

Edit: I just want to add for the people saying children and young people need to learn; I agree but the price for a mistake or lack of attentiveness should not be serious injury or death. We are the adults, it is OUR responsibility to be attentive and take precautions with their safety.
