Tips/Guide Cartridge corruption: A reminder to play your cartridges every few months
As the 3DS gets older and our community grows, an increasing number of users have been posting about cartridge corruption. This post should help clarify any confusion regarding what cartridge corruption is, how to prevent it, and how to resolve it if it has already happened to your 3DS cartridge.
What is cartridge corruption?
Cartridge corruption is when chunks of data on your cartridge become unreadable. Minor corruption is usually resolved as you play, but more extensive data corruption can cause your game to crash, not launch, or in severe cases become unable to be recognised by your console at all.
Why does this happen?
The data on 3DS cartridges is stored as NAND memory. When NAND memory does not recieve power for extended periods of time (ie, when you don't use your cartridge), the electrons storing the data move, causing the data to corrupt. In order to prevent this from rendering your 3DS cartridge unusable, a refresh function checks for any corrupted data and attempts to repair it. These checks are done when the cartridge is inserted into a console, when the system is shut down, and every 10,000 reads. However, if too much corruption has occured the function will be unable to repair the affected data.
Which games are prone to corruption?
Although corruption can occur in any 3DS cartridge, certain games are more likely to corrupt than others. Some games that are more likely to corrupt are:
- Super Smash Bros
- Fire Emblem Echoes
- Fire Emblem Fates
- Pokémon OR/AS
- Pokémon X/Y
- Persona Q
- Mario Kart 7
How do I prevent it?
The best way to prevent cartridge corruption is to play your cartridges. Roughly 10-15 minutes every few months should be enough, however there is no hard and fast rule. Ideally, you should be actively playing rather than idle to ensure that data on the cartridge that may otherwise go unused gets checked and refreshed. At a minimum, you should launch the cartridge.
Is my cartridge corrupted?
If your game freezes at a specific part, your cartridge does not show up on the home menu, or you see an error message, your cartridge may be corrupted.
If something else happens (e.g you get sent back the the home menu, you are stuck on the 3DS splash infinitely, your console freezes at random times, etc) or you are unsure, you should ask for help in the r/3DS Discord server or Nintendo Homebrew's Discord server.
I think my cartridge is corrupted, what do I do?
If your game freezes at a specifc part or you see the "an error has occured" message when launching or playing, follow the instructions on this page.
If cleaning your cartridge does not resolve the issue and your 3DS is stock, you will need to hack your console in order to carry out further troubleshooting steps.
If you see an ErrDisp message, check your error code here and follow the instructions provided. If you see an exception screen, check your error message here and follow the instructions provided.
TL;DR
Please remember play your 3DS cartridges every few months to prevent corruption.

Collection / Show Off Japanese 3DS-LL has some photos from previous owner.
Bought it off an eBay auction, noticed it had a SD card in it. Opened up the camera and actually found some photos!
There were a lot of selfies of the previous owner (a little Japanese kid) but I have not included them, (or any other faces) out of respect for privacy.

Discussion Just put this metal circle pad on my sons 2DS
I put one on my console a week or two ago, and my son really liked it so I ordered a red one for his red/white 2DS. We think it looks really sleek!

Homebrew Porting Need for Speed Underground 2 to the 3DS (decompilation project, x86 to ARM)
I'm only showing this off because of how much progress I've made. I feel proud to share it. I've still got a long way to go but thanks to the Gamecube version bundling the debug symbols, it makes decompiling the PC version a lot faster and easier. 3D renderer works, 2D renderer works, but still a ways to go! Yes its based off the PC version and no there was no pre-existing fully completed decomp project for NFSU2 unlike Sonic Mania and other related decomp projects we've seen brought to 3DS. Making changes such as what you see in the photo to make it nicer for a 3DS, as the game was a one-screen game famously, so I'm going to be taking some things and putting them on the bottom screen instead for a nicer experience.

Technical Question Is this carrying case worth it?
I found this case and I'm very tempted to get it because my New 2ds XL is just in my nightstand all the time. Has anyone got this case and is it worth it?

Technical Question 3ds emulation questions about

Technical Question Is this damage on the upper lcd screen?
Never own any Nintendo DS console before and I want to buy one. These are images of a used New Nintendo 3DS that has been listed online. Are these some kind of damage on the upper lcd screen or just on the lcd protector?

I wanted to get this model but was wondering- does the plastic body itself of the 3ds inevitably yellow over time?

Miscellaneous Restoring a childhood mistake
Last year i started using my 3ds again and its amazing! I take it with me everywhere.
Only one problem. 2018 as you can see i decided to put these pingu stickers on my console. Since coming back i’ve been very conscious about using it in public, well no more.
I finally took the time and removed the stickers as well as all residue left and man it looks better! But now I’m wondering if i should customize it, but this time a little more tastefully and planned out.
Question 🙋
Do you guys like the all natural look or should i give it another shot customizing it 8 years later?
Edit: May my boy rest in peace 😢💔
Edit 2: Ok so apparently people absolutely love comrade pingu!? so maybe just maybe he will return better and stronger… who knows what the future holds…🫣

Recommendation A fish I painted on New Art Academy
You can see the other drawing I made when trying Art Academy: First Semester at the bottom screen. They're surprisingly good guides for art in my opinion and the drawing programs are pretty good when it comes to the 3ds.

Technical Question Can this battery last 5 more days?
I already know this little guy is slightly expanding and a new battery is on the way. However, I am also currently addicted to Tomodachi Life and don't want to miss out on the daily stuff. Is this safe to use until my new battery comes in? Note: the battery is almost 15-year-old.

Technical Question trying to update a game
I recently bought my 3DS XL from GameStop. I’ve completely played through Pokémon black and had no problems. Then I was starting to do a play through through Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, and then when I went to go into the game, it said I had to download an update. I didn’t have an SD card at the time so I went and got an SD card and put it in once I put it in. It gave me the same updating screen and the update wasn’t making any progress and then eventually it errored out. What am I missing?

Technical Question brown grease inside my new 3ds xl back cover?
opened my new 3ds xl earlier today to check on the battery (it was also my first time doing it). decided to check it again just in case and noticed there was suddenly some grease on the right side (opposite from the battery). I cleaned it up with some wipes so that's how I know it was a darkish brown. It just smelled like grease or something adjacent to that. The battery was completely dry also so I know it didn't come from that. Everything works fine also!
I actually haven't used this 3ds very often and it's been stored far away from liquids so I know it's not water or anything, especially since it only appeared in the span of a couple of hours. I've been trying to find answers for it and there seem to be similar posts about it in the past (1) (2) (3) (4) but not many answers that fit my situation. the closest I've gotten to an answer is this comment from post 4 about it being flux because I bought it refurbished.
if anyone knows the answer, I would love to be informed! especially since i'm not sure what could have caused it to leak so suddenly

Technical Question should I try to fix it?
I dug up this SNES new 3ds xl and noticed many problems:
Scratched up top screen
Colors on bottom screen has much less contrast (2DS for reference)
C stick is all boogered up
Struggles to read microSD cards and game cards
Struggles to read the battery and turn on
Missing back plate (got this one from another new 3ds xl as well as the battery)
Do you think it’s possible to repair this, or to get someone else to, or should I just let this go?
