Putin by now is realizing he made an enormous mistake in invading Ukraine, but there's no face-saving way for him to end this. It's not in his nature to appear weak, nor is Russia a place where weakness is tolerated. He would appear vulnerable.

Ukraine is another Afghanistan for Russia.

According to The Guardian, Russia is losing 6000 more soldiers a month than it can replace. They've already mined the prisons, conscripting murders, rapists, habitual drunks and drug addicts. Young men quick enough have fled the country. Older men who formerly served are being reactivated.

There are shortages in consumer goods, power difficulties and now gas shortages. Russians are unhappy, though it's dangerous to express it. Anyone who sends the highly guarded and paranoid Putin out a window or can slip him a polonium cocktail then assumes power, is likely to get a huge honeymoon period.

But ground troops are enough of their war strategy that they're unable to replace them quickly enough. 1.5 million Russian casualties

You don’t win a war with battalions of scared men that were randomly pulled from the streets and stuffed into uniforms. They are just cannon fodder.
