It almost certainly splits along the good old 1/3 rule

1/3 of them support him

1/3 genuinely don’t care about anything except themselves and their immediate circle

1/3 are against it but in a society like Russia have learned to keep quiet. If Russia were normal that 1/3 would be doing standard political opposition and trying to persuade the 1/3 of selfish assholes to vote with them to overcome the 1/3 of mindless bootlickers.

This sounds like the US as well…

u/Ambitious_Bit_9389 20h ago

This person 1/3rds are not based on political stance though. The 1/3 of each category could be spread across the whole political spectrum.

u/Straight-Balance830 19h ago

In the American Revolution, a third were Loyalists, another third were revolutionaries, and the other third were indifferent. About the Nazis, someone remarked “a third of society killed the other third, and the last third just watched”. I think it’s a valid general rule of ideological distribution.

Dear America:
You are waking up, as Germany once did, to the awareness that 1/3 of your people would kill another 1/3, while 1/3 watches.

When was that written?

39

u/Odie_Odie 18h ago

He didnt say it really but the fabrication spread in 2017 according to Politifaq. I believe the quote but I just think it came from some tweet.

u/chris_ut 18h ago

Standard fake reddit political slop. Half the folks who post here are russian/chinese bots

7

u/BaldursFenceDoor 16h ago

1/3rd are Russian. 1/3rd are Chinese bots. 1/3rd are Giga Chads like me

10

u/chiPersei 18h ago

This quote was not said by filmmaker Werner Herzog; it originated from a satirical Twitter parody account @WernerTwertzog in 2017.

-1

u/theT3rr04 18h ago

It's like the same thing.

12

u/CheshireCat78 18h ago

Just now. 😁

I’m sorry I will see myself out.

1

u/unurbane 18h ago

Hahaha

1

u/JadedBoyfriend 18h ago

I understood the reference 😉

4

u/Adjective_Noun_2000 18h ago

It's a great quote but it's not from Herzog. It's from a Twitter account called Werner Twertzog (back in the days before Twitter was lost to the first 1/3).

1

u/WizardSleeves31 18h ago

I love his voice.

1

u/seeingeyegod 16h ago

It's so much more powerful when you read it in his voice.

Yea ive seen numerous studies where in essentially any population of people and even most subpopulations always tend to split this way, 1/3 to each side and 1/3 in the middle cant be bothered. Even in more ideologically pure areas you still get it to some some extent where 1/3 are full steam, 1/3 tend to be overly cautious and 1/3 somewhere between/not interested in picking sides.

1

u/RushIllustrious 18h ago

So if you're not watching, you better do the killing or you'll be killed is what I learned here.

22

u/mattmillze 20h ago

Same thing could be said about Americans. There are people on both sides that fit neatly into all three of these categories. Main difference is that ours flips every 4-8 years and people switch which category they're in at the time.

1

u/baumpop 17h ago

every single city and town has the rules of thirds

13

u/Environmental-Video3 18h ago

Americans have the ability to, and the strongest will, to say whatever they want whenever they want.

The ratios of support for government are applicable to any country.

In terms of political opposition though Russians are bred to say nothing to nobody about anything. Ever. They used to be disappeared during Stalinist purges but now they just have poorly maintained windows.

4

u/fairlywired 16h ago

Maybe it's just the way it looks from the outside but it always seems like Americans will stage a couple protests for big issues but when there's no immediate change, most go back to just putting up with it and complaining online.

People seem to be more content with asking if it's time to do something than actually doing something.

6

u/derinus 18h ago

That ability is fading. We'll see about that will power when ICE knocks on the door

2

u/DefinitelynotaDAPL 18h ago

Yep. We've never really had secret "police"(i use that term lightly) disappearing people... until now.

2

u/bigrv 16h ago

Also they have those special handguns that allow you to commit suicide by shooting yourself twice in the back of the head.

1

u/Environmental-Video3 15h ago

America has those too. See Barry Seal.

1

u/Ghazzz 17h ago

I feel there are very few dissenting opinions coming out of the white house. It all seems very strictly kept in line.

2

u/Environmental-Video3 17h ago

I’m not talking about politicians toeing the party line. They will say what their whip tells them to say.
The average citizen though has the enshrined in law right to scream at and berate their representatives wherever they want.

1

u/Ghazzz 3h ago

There being a whip telling politicians how to act is a fantastic example of cultural suppression of dissenting voices.

1

u/Environmental-Video3 1h ago

That’s how political parties be all over the world. And management boards of companies and NGOs and schools and plenty of other types of organisations. But the average US citizen still has the right to say whatever they want.

1

u/oxnume 14h ago

Amercans have no will. Just a bunch of pathetic losers that pretend to be tough but will gladly lick the boot.

1

u/FuckOffClippy 13h ago

> Americans have the ability to, and the strongest will, to say whatever they want whenever they want.

In many respects, and in a lot of the time, yes. But not under Nixon, not during Vietnam, and not under Trump. Shit ain’t so great here right now. The Feds are killing people for speaking up, shooting and beating people up left and right, and charging everyone else that they can to put them through the wringer, to bankrupt them—with no safety nets!—and to ruin their lives.

1

u/Consistent_Slice_752 8h ago

It's just a matter of time. He's declared all media and people who criticize him "enemies. " he has his AG attack and criticize lawful protesters after they were murdered by the American Gestapo (ICE). Some folks were just in the wrong place at were following law enforcement instructions and got murdered anyway.

3

u/Wayelder 19h ago

eerily familliar.

2

u/DGtlRift 19h ago

Especially since somehow the orange stain still has 33% approval among the electorate.

3

u/Wayelder 18h ago

They'll fall together as they held each other up.

In both Nations they've reversed the power roles. The State Rules the people. The people fear the state.

That's new-ish n the USA - the reverse of what they've had for 30 years

2

u/Ok-Selection4206 18h ago

Because of the useless lying idiots on the other side of the aisle.

2

u/vortox1234 18h ago

Blame everyone but the people voting for evil

3

u/AdventurousVast6510 15h ago

except that the comment you replied to is untrue

u/noir_lord 14h ago

The US is where Russia was 25ish years ago, I didn't think the US would get this bad this fast given Russia always had weak democratic institutions (given they where a decade old and the US was 250 years old and mostly stable since late 19th) but here we are.

Americans if you want to see your current future in a decade or so at most, look at Russia circa ~2015 basically.

5

u/Helmett-13 18h ago

If that was true our prisons were be full to capacity with political opponents...well, the ones that weren't tossed out of windows.

Americans aren't scared to speak up about the shitty things their government perpetrates.

When was the last time a "No More Kings" protest was held in Moscow? Ah, yes, that's right.

2

u/tdog_2005 17h ago

Yes the world would be a lot better place with out Putin and Trump , both evil pos

1

u/Fingersicle 18h ago

Crazy how the land of Ruby Ridge, militias and Waco have become.

1

u/DecantsForAll 11h ago

If Russia were normal that 1/3 would be doing standard political opposition and trying to persuade the 1/3

Yeah, except in the US instead of 1/3 doing standard political opposition and trying to persuade the 1/3, or learning to keep quiet, they actively try to push that 1/3 to the other side.

1

u/shootsy2457 18h ago

That was Trump’s plan.

1

u/JWWBurger 18h ago

I had to do a CE for work related to change management, which largely focused on how to implement changes and effectively communicate to change a system. Every step of the way, it felt clear that this administration is doing largely everything mentioned in the class to implement the sort of gangsterism Putin runs.

-1

u/LakEth2n 18h ago

Sounds like every big countries I think

-4

u/cienfuegos2607 19h ago

You don't need to be quiet in US. So 1/3 is indifferent to Trump administration and 2/3 are supporting it

2

u/TrazhMazter 18h ago

You haven’t seen people protesting across all 50 states? The “quiet” 1/3 in the Russian scenario are the protesters in America. It’s a little delusional to think he still has 2/3 of American supporters.

1

u/cienfuegos2607 17h ago

There's some people with signs here and there, I know.

But it's not like the president militia is shooting your citizen in the face, fucked the global oil market including your own country, threatening to invade Europe and annexing your your most loyal ally and neighbor.

I can't believe most americans are not supporting this. Because you are doing nothing to stop it. Nothing.

2

u/TrazhMazter 16h ago

What would you suggest law abiding citizens do to stop it besides protesting?

1

u/Outrageous_Cicada401 16h ago

This is not accurate. Speaking up in America has a social cost, since most towns and even families are split on politics.
Those who speak up are just ignorant of how much it affects them.

44

u/Accomplished-Cow-234 20h ago

It's hard to meaningfully organize effective dissent, because so much of the visible opposition is itself a honeypot. Putinism has really brought rot all the way to the core of an already deeply damaged society.

17

u/oops_all_memes 17h ago

I knew a person who worked on multiple projects lead by Navalny. So it made it comfortable for me to share a lot of information with them that I would otherwise keep to myself. Including information that would've completely compromised me

Well, yesterday I accidentally stumbled on an interview where that person explains that they used to work with FSB 🤡 For context, I left Russia because someone reported me to authorities due to certain activities that the gestapo deemed inappropriate. I now wonder if it had anything to do with that person

That is to say, you are absolutely right and the mofos have their hands in everyone's arses

4

u/Accomplished-Cow-234 17h ago

Seems like the only social trust you can really have is trust that someone is compromised and for everyone else, that could be you. It is a sad state of affairs.

u/onarainyafternoon 20m ago

This reminds me of my grandfather. He was from Hungary, was alive during the war and for the entirety of the Soviet times. When the wall came down and the Warsaw pact countries liberalized, and all the intelligence agency files were declassified, he found out one of his closest friends had been reporting on him and everyone else for decades.

5

u/Wyrmnax 17h ago

Well, it is not just Putinism. It tends to happen on all types of dictatorships. Because there is always a lot of people that are discontent with the government, and if the people in power let it show, it gains strenght quickly.

So you have to stomp it out before it even begins, all the time. It is also one of the reasons why free press is such a important concept of democracy - because you need to be able to criticize the people in power openly to be able to steer the country in another direction.

5

u/Accomplished-Cow-234 16h ago

For sure. The FSB didn't invent the tactic, it is just incredible how many pies their fingers are in.

2

u/Lepelotonfromager 13h ago

That can work in the short run but just like with the soviet union it's a rot that eventually collapses society. If people can't meaningfully criticise or provide feedback, if the elite become a protected class then the corruption just sets in.

Just look at the Russian armoury turning out to be about half of what was on paper because so much stuff had been embezzled or left to rot.

31

u/jwyn3150 18h ago

I’ve been to and lived in Russia. His support is closer to 60% or even more. Everyone over 50 loves him due to what happened in the 90s , basically. Generalization but that’s what it felt like in SPB which is the most liberal city in Russia, where funny enough is where he’s from.

13

u/Lia64893 18h ago

I was only there for a month two years ago and you’re right. All of my mom’s friends and family voted for him except my uncle and maybe my cousin. I had a girl my age tell me that Russia isn’t invading Ukraine, they’re defending themselves from Ukraine’s attacks. And that was July 2024.

1

u/Emotional_Remove_755 11h ago

“Defending themselves” hm? Sounds exactly like what a certain apartheid state in the Middle East keeps saying…

1

u/More_Passenger3988 15h ago

Even though they support him due to the 90s, the question I have is do they really believe him and support this war?

They're being told that they're attacking the Ukraine to save them from literal Nazis and I can't believe they buy that sh**.

5

u/Professional-Swan-18 14h ago

There definitely are people that buy that entire narrative. It would be next to impossible to put a number on it due to how things work in Russia, but I would wager everything I have that at least 25% are fully on board with everything Putin claims.

Having seen how fully large numbers of US citizens eat up every nugget of shit from Rumpy's dementia riddled diaper when there is freely available media reporting on facts to the contrary makes it easy to see how even more people would fall for it when the environment is far more controlled.

1

u/More_Passenger3988 14h ago

See, I'm convinced that a lot of people in the MAGA camp don't really believe anything Trump says- they just don't care. They simply feel the need to defend their cult leader and whether or not he's lying doesn't concern them all that much. Many of the folks I know that work in finance and support him will straight up admit he's a lyer and that he's a bad business man but they still support him anyway because they think he's pushing for certain things they support. I know religious Jews that know he's a lyer but they still support him because they say, "No other president bothered to get our hostages back".

And of course there are those that actually do believe him as well, but I think that's a smaller pool.

I wonder if it's the same with Putin.

2

u/Professional-Swan-18 14h ago

I definitely agree that not all of MAGA are true believers. But there are more true believers, cult follower types in the Republican party now than ever before I'd wager. And the way it was built is exactly the same as how Putin built his support in Russia. He just has both more tools at his disposal and has been doing it for longer, so I have high confidence that he has more true believers than Rumpy does.

ETA: more true believers percentage wise. Actual numbers would be much harder to gauge.

2

u/jwyn3150 13h ago

Maybe not the younger generation but the older yeah. They get bombarded by nothing but state issued propaganda 24/7.

1

u/IllImprovement700 1h ago

But maybe that 60% could still be split into 30% who are hardcore supporters and 30% who doesn't really care what is happening but is inclined to support him. Like one half is active supporter and one half is just passive supporter.

But maybe what I'm saying is stupid, I don't know.

8

u/unknown-one 19h ago

and thats the problem

horrible incompetence of western countries and even ukraine in doing any psyops on ruZZians

at the same time ruZZia pays politicians, influencers, people working for government, media, celebrities etc to create mess in western countries with propaganda and fake new

3

u/magnus150 18h ago

I mean, it IS the country that taught me that "defenestration" happens enough that there is a whole word for it.

2

u/Detox208 18h ago

This is America

1

u/Advanced-Budget779 19h ago

What‘s the source to that rule? Sounds interesting.

1

u/MJsD4d828 18h ago

Normal country? What, like the states? 🤣

1

u/MySixHourErection 18h ago

Are there any actual studies on this? It feels intuitively correct, but I'd like to know what the data and analysis show.

1

u/TenchuReddit 18h ago

The percentages I’ve seen are more like 25% in favor, 25% against but staying quiet, and 50% in deep depoliticized denial.

1

u/BurningPenguin 17h ago

That's under the assumption that elections are fair. Which isn't really the case in Russia.

1

u/MxM111 17h ago

I would guess it is more like 20/60/20

1

u/Doggydad73 17h ago

Gee, this sounds like USA to me!

1

u/DLeck 17h ago

Russian elections are without a doubt rigged enough so Putin will never lose an election. Putin is a puppet for the Russian oligarchs. Russia is essentially an Oligarchy with Putin acting as dictator.

1

u/VikSick 17h ago

2.98/3 supports him. All the sane ones left before war

1

u/PJballa34 16h ago

Nice take

1

u/lecho182 11h ago

It more like 50%, 40%, 10% in Russia

1

u/RevalianKnight 19h ago

not really, that 1/3 had left the country a long long time ago

1

u/Sex_with_DrRatio 18h ago

I wish 😭
