I recently banged up my car while parking. No other car was involved, it was just my car vs. a wall. The wall is fine, and all the damage is to my car.

I didn’t want to pay the extra AED 150 to have the police come out, so I went to Al Barsha Police Station. They told me they couldn’t deal with it because the accident happened in Business Bay and that I need to go to Bur Dubai instead. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I tried doing it through the Dubai Police app, but I’m honestly not really understanding which option I’m supposed to use. The “Minor Traffic Accident Report” option requires the number plate of two separate cars.

There’s a “Traffic Accident Report – Unknown Party” option, and that’s the only thing I can think of using since I can’t make it to Bur Dubai.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? Can I use the “Unknown Party” option?

After almost 3 years running a solo web agency out of a freezone, I've decided to close it down. Between license renewal, visa renewal, and the mandatory exit trips, running a one-person company in the UAE has become more overhead than it's worth, especially with client work slowing down these past couple months.

A bit about me: 7 years freelancing, mostly through Upwork ($100k+ made, 30+ projects, 5,000+ hours), working across PHP/Laravel and JS/Vue/Nuxt, with side experience in WordPress, Magento, and React. I did contract frontend work for a YC-backed payments company, including migrating their app from Vue 2 to Vue 3 and helping build an open-source component library. Right now I'm finishing official Vue and Nuxt certifications and pushing toward senior-level skills like system design and handling high-traffic apps.

I still have a valid UAE visa and I'm available right away. The UAE has been home for years now and I'd much rather stay and build a career here full-time than move back, so I'm actively looking for that door before my visa runs out. Got a 500 AED fine for "Failure to abide by traffic signs and instructions"

But it only shows a picture of my number plate so where is the proof of the violation? How can I dispute this as there is no option on the dubai police website to dispute the fine, only to pay it? I don't want to pay for something where the only proof is a picture of a number plate.

For me it's negotiating. Earlier where i used to live prices were fixed. Here, everything is negotiable from rent to electronics. Never thought I'd get good at bargaining but now it's second nature. Anyone else pick up something unexpected here?

There is a grocery store i visit that upcharges on many drinks like cola, lipton iced tea etc, when the prices are printed on them as 2 AED.

For common ones they take 50 fils extra and for lipton iced tea they charge 4 AED.

I have read previous threads that said this can be submitted as a complaint to DED with the receipt but then some said that this is allowed. I am confused? Is this allowed or not?

If its allowed, what is the point of the price printed on the can?

Most of my five years as an engineer has been spent inside Dubai real estate, building and rebuilding property search, listing platforms and the architecture underneath them for agencies here.

I was laid off a while ago. Instead of firing off applications, I spent the week auditing the market I know best. Everything below is verifiable from your own browser in under a minute. No scanning, no scraping, just View Source and PageSpeed Insights.

1. A brokerage whose location pages tell Google not to index them

One of the larger agencies here serves a canonical tag on its Dubai Marina page pointing at the generic /properties/ page rather than at itself. Same pattern across the community pages. The titles and H1s don't mention the location either. every area page ships "Properties for sale" with no place name anywhere in it.

So when someone searches "apartments for sale in Dubai Marina," the page built for precisely that query is asking not to be shown. They carry roughly 2,800 listings on Bayut and Property Finder. They're paying portals to reach buyers their own site is configured not to reach.

(Not naming this one, I've contacted them and publishing while they decide would be unfair.)

2. metropolitan.realestate — three seconds to first byte

Fails Core Web Vitals on mobile and desktop, measured from real Chrome users over 28 days rather than a lab test. Mobile LCP 5.5s, INP 507ms, both in Google's "poor" band.

The number that matters is TTFB: 3 seconds on mobile, 2.5 on desktop. That's the server taking three seconds to send the first byte, before an image or script loads. Not an image-compression problem. backend, and the root cause of the other two.

Separately, on one building's page six 1-bedroom listings appear under two different reference prefixes (MPS- and MS-), each with a different agent. Two prefixes on one building usually means two feeds merged with no dedup pass.

3. famproperties.com — a broken template variable, live in Google

Their /dubai-marina page currently ships this meta description:

The location variable is empty. It's in Google's index right now. Their /dubai-marina-dubai page has it correct, which points at the real problem: at least three separate URLs for Dubai Marina, competing with each other.

Their filtered search URLs are also indexed with eight empty query parameters. Every filter combination can produce another near-duplicate indexable page, spreading crawl budget across thousands of URLs instead of the proper landing pages.

What I actually take from this

These aren't obscure bugs. A wrong canonical, a three-second server response, an empty template variable sitting in Google's index. any competent engineer finds them in an afternoon, and each one costs real money in a market where a single transaction is worth six figures in commission.

The pattern I keep hitting is that brokerages treat their platform as a marketing expense rather than a product. Sites get outsourced to an agency, shipped, and then nobody owns them. There's no engineer in the building whose job it is to notice that the Marina page deindexed itself. That's not incompetence, it's an org chart and it's why the same defects show up across companies that have never spoken to each other.

Platforms are a different story. The portals run real engineering teams and it shows. But on the agency side, if you're an engineer, you're a line item, and the layoff I just went through is what that looks like from the inside.

So I'm looking outward. fintech, logistics, healthtech, anywhere the software is the product rather than a brochure.

One of the biggest mistakes I made in my career was trying to be the most productive person in the room. Every job has a certain expected pace, whether it is written in the manual or just a vibe in the manager's head. Take this example: a colleague of mine used to take about 5 days to finish a certain type of project. I wanted to impress everyone, so I would skip my lunch break, stay late, and finish it in 3 days. I thought I was a hero. The problem? Those 3 days became the new standard. And when a "rush" project came along later, they expected me to finish it in two days. Since I was already at my limit with the 3 days, I literally couldn't speed up any further. Suddenly, I wasn't the superstar in their eyes anymore, and I was labeled as the person who can't keep up when things get busy. Now, I operate at 75-80% of my true speed. I submit the same task in 4 days. It is still faster than the average, so I look like I am working hard and diligent. But when things go wrong and the manager needs a "miracle," I am able to push myself and finish in 3 days. That is when I get all the credit for being a team player and handling the crisis, even though I am just working at my normal, regular effort for a few hours. This is the only way to maintain your mental peace and stay in the management's good books. Honestly, if you don't leave yourself a buffer, you are just asking for extra work without any extra reward.

There’s a guy I’ve known since school. He’s Arab, originally from the Levant, but I’d rather not mention his exact nationality.

His financial situation is quite modest at the moment, although he was a smart and capable student back in school.

.There’s always been mutual respect between us, but I’ve noticed that whenever he has any problem related to the UAE—whether it’s his residency, accommodation, work, banking, legal advice , bringing a family member or brother over who needs help finding a job, or even someone insulting him on social media he comes to me.

I help him as much as I can, but sometimes he gets upset when I’m unable to help him with a particular issue.

Since the beginning of this year, he’s been talking to me about how he doesn’t want to be an employee and wants to become a businessman. He keeps telling me how well he understands the market and how much he knows about business.

From what I understand, he wants me to sponsor him and go into business with him. Personally, I don’t think friendship and business should be mixed, especially based on what I’ve seen happen with friends who went into business together.
When I indirectly told him no by saying that I’m currently busy and don’t have the time to manage or be involved in a business, he got upset and said, “Bro, you don’t understand. I don’t want to be an employee for the rest of my life.”

At the moment, he’s still messaging me, but I’ve been ignoring him.

How can I set clear boundaries with him? I mean, I’m willing to help him when I can, but I don’t want to become responsible for every problem he has in the UAE.
With my Emirati friends, for example, there are naturally boundaries in the relationship. We go out together, travel together, and have a good relationship, but we don’t interfere in each other’s private lives or constantly ask each other for favors. There are boundaries, and neither side gets offended when the other person says no.

I could be wrong, but what I mean is that I would be the one putting up the money, while he would be the one doing the actual work and running the business.

I’ve heard from many people that this kind of setup can be a bad idea, where one person is the money and the other is the muscle.

For me:

Good:

• Very accommodating with requests
• Flexible and understanding
• Fewer children in the class

Challenges:

• Sometimes slow to respond
• Nursery, FS1 and FS2 children being mixed together during the initial period
• Not receiving regular daily updates about food, toilet, mood, activities, etc.

Every school will have positives and challenges, but it would be interesting to understand what parents genuinely value and what they feel schools should improve. Maybe we’ll also discover some really good practices that more schools should follow.
