Hey all. Recently picked up this Conn from fb marketplace. I love vintage American brass instruments, so I've been trying to track down its history. Problem is, I'm having a hard time squaring the serial # and model with what I'm finding online.

-It is engraved "DIRECTOR" and has a "16H" before the serial number, which doesn't seem to be a model that exists? Directors seem to be either 14H or 18H, and 16H is an Eb alto?

-Serial may be either #03870969 (too many numbers, maybe misreading a prefix) or #870969 (placing it at 1960-61, which I think fits the wear and tear)

Hand and tuning slides have both seen better days, but the sound and response are delightful. Can't wait to have it up and running!

So I was drinking a few days ago, and decided to purchase this 1978 Holton TR 680 for $70.00 with known problems. The Slide is heavily damaged. As you can see, the stem to connect the slide the bell section is literally broken off. The Top inner tube is completed disconnected. I would like to ask your most creative ideas on what I should do:

(1) Source a new Holton slide

(2)Try to fix the current slide – if doing surgery on the slide, could I change to a replaceable leadpipe set up?

(3)Frankenbone this to another .547 slide – could I make an adaptor and use a slide from another make?

Bell section is a little crunchy but otherwise fine. Rotor is working okay

I own a 1968 TR-680 and it has served me well for 30 years. Yes, I know it’s not up to snuff for you trigger trombone snobs (if I could’ve bought a Bach Strad for $70 I would’ve). I’m Open to your thoughts

I need to mic up for a ska band I'm playing with but I know nothing about mics, any recommendations or insights?

Clip-on and wireless seem convenient, are there reasons not to go that way?

Also hope to use it for trumpet sometimes.

I recently discovered I have an allergy to a few brass alloys and those happen to be the ones that my mouthpieces are, where could I get an affordable gold-plated one?

My embouchure changes way to much when I go to a pedal A and I can only play pedal Bb when I do an arpeggio down to it. Then I can get the note to start but I don’t have any flexibility. Anything after pedal Ab my embouchure doesn’t fit in my mouth piece (Greg black 4.5-5G L)

Even with tight corners it’s difficult, my low range has always been a huge weakness.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice/ ideas as to what would be causing this?

I haven’t had any major changes in the amount of time I spend playing.

I usually have up to a solid D5. The stuff that starts getting kind of iffy when I’ve been playing a lot is Between Ab4-D5.

Today for example (similar situation all week) an hour into rehearsal I wasn’t able to sustain a D4, wich in no way should be a challenging note for me to play, even if I had been playing for hours and hours and hours.

Any suggestions?

I've played my trusty yamaha for about 10 years now and I love it. I recently got an opportunity to try a king 2b for an afternoon and I really enjoyed that as well. I'm considering buying the 2b and having both, but I'm curious how you folks find the two horns. Are they similar in ways? How are they different? What do you like and dislike about each horn? I'm curious to hear your experience

i have 8 days to prepare this piece and I just need it cleared up so I can focus on it being super high (bass trombone) and locking in that pitch.

I went looking for a single-page diagram labelling all of the key parts of a trombone that an intermediate-level player would want to be able to identify, but I couldn’t find one anywhere.

Rather than give up, i decided to make one. Once it was finished, I thought it might actually be useful to others, so I’m here to get feedback from other players to see what they think may be missing, unnecessary, incorrect, or confusing.

This isn’t designed to be completely comprehensive or something that a tech would have up on the wall in a repair shop — it’s made to be a reference covering the main parts that players, students, and teachers would talk about in lessons and everyday trombone playing.

The names for things are supposed to be “commonly correct” and not “technically correct,” focusing on the most-used terms for things. I also made the conscious decision not to include the slide tenon or label the throat and backbore of the mouthpiece — labeling those would mean adding a cutaway section and showing the trombone disassembled, and I wanted this to stay a single, fully-assembled view (plus a supplemental bell section and mouthpiece).

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who teach or are learning, since that’s who this is for.

Can you take a look and give me any feedback you have (good, bad, or otherwise)?

I'm a jazz trombonist so well versed in who are the greats (and even not-so greats) in jazz, but want to expand my listening to other genres.

Who are the canonical players that everyone should listen to and analyse in your genre? For classical I've come across Alessi, Bousfield and Lindberg. Who else do I need to check out? And I know even fewer trombonists in other genres.

Ideally if you can link to an example and what makes it so special to you, that would be amazing.

Im looking to buy a mazda miata 1991 for myself but i was wondering if it'll fit a trombone in the boot? The forums online say that it depends on the model but i figure asking other trombone players will be more help. Obviously it will fit in the footwell but wether or not it will get in the boot im not sure. My main two trombones are a Rath r100 and a yamaha ysl448. Any info would be helpful thanks

The latest tour I'm playing has a perfect Salt Shaker moment. 3 beats to go open from a bucket passage, and then almost no time later to put in a bucket between movements before an exposed solo. This is one of those spots where the musical director spends time at rehearsal warning about how important it is to be ready for the solo and talking about how many of the players have had difficulty making the entrance. (You can see all the arrows and markings in the music. The only thing missing is a skull and crossbones!) The Salt Shaker mute makes it easy to pop in the mute and make the entrance with seconds to spare. No worries about squirrely response or weird intonation quirks either!
